15 year road test of some '94 Bordeaux

Laville Haut Brion Blanc – decent aromatics of lemon peel and lychee nuts, pleasant, short finish.

Clinet – warm blueberries and violets on the nose, palate presence is quite substantial and with good precision, clipped finish is a negative.

L’Evangile – straightforward blackberries on the nose, medium-bodied and lean.

Angelus – chinese spice and black fruit aromatics, full-bodied, dense, strong structure, should develop nicely.

Lafleur – full-bodied wine with excellent material; still rather unevolved; finish is explosive, very promising wine.

Trotanoy – seemed one dimensional, touch of green, not recommended.

Haut Brion – medium to full-bodied with exceptional intensity combined with the HB elegance. Pliant on the palate with a good combo of fruit and minerality. Finish is exceptional both in intensity and length. Easily WOTN.

Mouton– medium-bodied wine with smokey cassis flavors and high tannins. Not a bad wine but I always expect more from Mouton and am left wanting in most vintages. No exception here.

Cos d’Estournel – found this hard with astringent tannins. Some others found more redeeming qualities than I did.

Leoville Poyferre – medium bodied wine with some astringent tannins.

Sociando Mallet – thrown in blind. Vanilla notes intermixed with cassis on the nose. Medium-bodied with moderate tannins. Quite decent.

So a mixed bag for these ‘94s with Haut Brion, Angelus and Lafleur being successful. Some other decent wine made but many others suffer from some pretty big and in some cases astringent tannins.

Pretty much my experience as well Paul. I did not buy FG in 94 so I have not tasted the HB although that is usually my favorite FG. The left bank 2nd growths always left me lacking in pleasure. The most you can say about them was that they were vertical extenders. The Clinet has a lot to offer in the future if you can find one. Very big and brawny wine. The Troplong Mondot was very tannic but I still have a few and hope to retry in a year or two. [notworthy.gif]

Interesting; thanks for the report, Paul. Sounds like HB or Lafleur are the star attractions. Probably the kinds of wine if you have to buy from a restaurant’s wine list compared to more “premium” vintages…

Paul, nice update – I recently had the '94 Angelus on two separate occasions, once with it’s two more heralded siblings from '89 & '90, and we were all surprised with how well the wine showed. I haven’t had it side-by-side with the HB, but will have to do that one of these days. Another wine that I think performed well in the vintage is Pichon-Lalande.

Nice to see notes on the 94’s, I’ve enjoyed many wines from that vintage and feel it dosen’t get it’s due.

I always liked the L’Evangile back before this got prohibitvely expensive for the quality. I drank mine up long ago though. 94 got maligned a lot, but I liked it (similar but not as good as 02) for the upfront drinking and pricing (after 95/96 it seemed cheap). They were good restaurant values back then.

Paul,

Which do you think will be the best at the 20yr old mark?

Nice gathering, Paul and good to see soem of these wines showing well.

On release the Haut Brion was probably my second favorite after the Latour. Lafleur, Lafleur-Petrus, Leoville Las Cases, Montrose and Pontet Canet were also tops. I found the '94 L’Angelus too woody and spoofed on release and every time I’ve tried it since. There’s an artificial texture and plushness to the wine that I’m not crazy about.

I still have a bottle or two left each of the '94 Leoville Las Cases, Montrose, Leoville Barton and Pontet-Canet laying around, but to my tastes they need a little more time.

Brad

Paul posted notes before me? He’s really supporting this board!

Matt organized a dinner around the 1994 Bordeaux vintage last night. Nice group of 8 gathered at Union Square Cafe. One advantage of the recession has been some better corkage deals, and $10/bottle at USC certainly qualifies as a good deal.

Ben had generously brought a starter, the** 1994 Laville Haut Brion**. Recently I’ve run across several very advanced 1994-1996 white Bdx, and Gilman has commented about same thing. I didn’t detect any extraordinary oxidation here, just a light nutty note that seems right for 15. On the rounder more tropical side, a bit subdued, good not great for me despite vintage. B

We moved to the reds, doing the Right Bank first.

First Flight
1994 L’Evangile - this flight had some of the biggest divergences of opinion. I thought the Evangile a bit tight, but pretty tasty -midweight ripe red fruit, some coffee/mocha, good length, tannins only thing holding it back from outstanding. B/B+

1994 Clinet - others liked more than I (which surprised me because this was one of my WOTN when we did 1994s 5 years ago). Black and red berries, surprisingly short/clipped. B-

Second Flight
1994 Angelus - drinking quite well now, though there’s enough structure to hold. Smoky, mineral, black currant and plum, very good and my second favorite of night. B+/A-

1994 Lafleur - the beast. Very solid black plum and berry fruit, but a real wall of tannins. I had written needs 15 years, Paul opined 10, so we settled for 12.5. B for now, but most room for improvement of night, I voted as my #3.

1994 Trotanoy - I liked a bit more than table. Minerally, crunchy red fruit, again the tannins are holding it back, but I have doubts this can age past the tannins. Drink now with steak. B

Third Flight (with main courses)

1994 Haut Brion- this is first time I ever remember an unanimous WOTN with this group. I’ve always liked this, but this bottle showed especially well. Dark fruit, gravel, tobacco. Tannins are present but riper/rounder than some other wines. Nice balanced package of acids, tannins, and fruit. Smooth and elegant. A-

1994 Mouton Rothschild
As much as we like teasing Frank re Mouton, I can’t say this was worst wine of the night. Lead pencil, cassis, the typical refrain of tannins, no Moutonesque exoticism that I can note. B

1994 Cos D’Estournel
My notes just read “Hard hard hard.” Some blackcurrant fruit, but hard tannins totally dominate. Maybe this will show well in 10+ years, but I’m not sad it is my lone bottle. B-/C+

Fourth Flight
Brian had brought a couple bonus bottles, which we tried blind with the one remaining Medoc

Blind #1
A little herbal, big tannins, some cedary oak. Big wine, needs food. 1994 Sociando Mallet B/B-

Blind #2
I really didn’t care for this, a bit weedy, hard tannins, there’s both green fruit and green tannins. Might have been better with meat. 1994 Reserve de Comtesse, C+

1994 Leoville Poyferre
Some others really disliked, I thought this showed as a nice if not outstanding claret. Meaty, cassis fruit, tannins just a tad tough, not great but I’d be happy with it on my dinner table on steak night. B

1997 Foreau/Clos Naudin Vouvray Moelleux
This is the regular, not the Reserve. Apples, brown sugar, some Chenin wooliness, a bit lean. Good but not great, I have to remind myself to always spend just a bit more to get the reserve, which is almost always in the great category for me. B/B+

So not so different than what I would have predicted going in. Wines mostly good but not great, all still with substantial tannins, lots of “good steak wines” but with only a couple of exceptions not any potentially stellar wines.

The appetizers were not very red Bordeaux friendly, maybe a half order of pasta would have been better, but I opted for a small portion of a main of softshelled crab with fennel and roasted peppers. Not a match, but what I felt like eating. For main I got lamb chops, with a good potato gratin and some radicchio, arugula, etc. Three out of four of my chops were tasty, one tasted totally unseasoned, very strange. Good cheese course (I had a Cowgirl Mt Tam, Grayson, and an Italian smoked sheeps cheese).

Thanks to Matt for organizing and to all for good company.

Grade disclaimer: I’m a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn’t drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Mark, Lafleur would be my bet. HB should still be drinking well.

Dale, thanks for adding your notes and great to see you there.

had the Langoa Barton '94 and it was full of astringment tannins

Anybody have any recent experience with the 1994 Leoville Las Cases or Pontet Canet? I have 750s and mags of both.

In a Leoville Las Cases vertical back in January, the 1994 actually showed quite well. Here is my note about the 1994 LLC:

1994 Château Léoville Las Cases - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien (1/15/2009)
This wine exceeded my expectations. The best 1994 Bordeaux I’ve had so far. A very nice nose, with hints of underbrush and rocks. The palate has a nice sweetness to it, with surprisingly good length. (90pts)

That note, though, was written long before last night’s dinner that is the subject of this thread (thanks to Paul and Dale for posting notes). I would put the 1994 Haut Brion substantially above the LLC and probably rank the 1994 Angelus about even with the LLC, from what I remember.

Thanks to Matt for organizing the dinner and to all for their generous contributions of wines.

-Ben

Thanks for the notes, Paul and Dale. I liked the Cos somewhat more than you guys did, but agree with all the other comments.
As for the food, I wasn’t wowed. My steak tasted of bacon, and Paul’s rainbow collection of lamb bore no more than a passing resemblance to lamb…

I like the '94 LLC and have had it a few times this year.

I also like the '94 Latour. Only one bottle left and it is a 3L. And those two are it for my '94s. I do agree with the general assessment of this thread . . . I won’t be adding to my collection.

Thanks Paul.

Had Pichon Baron and Lynch Bages recently. Neither were very memorable and IMO aren’t likely to get much better either.

Tom

Wow, you were using the term “spoofed” way back then? You are a trailblazer.

Thanks for the great notes, Paul. I’ll join the chorus in saying that the '94 LLC is an overperformer for the vintage. Not a great wine, but a good wine for BDX lovers if you can get it for the right price.

Stick with me, kid.

I had a '94 Margaux a little while back that was pleasant, but underwhelming.

My only 94 data point recently was a terrible Pavie Macquin… vegetal/tomato character, dried out, ugly…
