07 Antica Terra Pinot & 07 Evesham Wood La Grive Bleue - Blind

2007 Antica Terra Pinot Noir - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (9/21/2009)
Antica Terra & Evesham Wood Served Together - BLIND: Aromatically the wines were similar with the Antica showing more fruit. Also has a stemy/green quality that is very appealing. Smells terrific but I could see the green elements putting some people off. Darker and showing more oak than the EW. Very pretty and pure on the palate although slightly bitter on the finish. Tannins are fitting in nicely. Showed a little less candied than the EW. Time is needed to sort the jumbled finish. (91 pts.)

2007 Evesham Wood Pinot Noir La Grive Bleue - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills (9/21/2009)
Antica Terra & Evesham Wood Served Together - BLIND: Very subtle aromatics. Has a woody quality that is interesting and different. On the second day the aromatics showed more spice and pine and seemed more seamless. Shows more red fruit than the Antica and the finish isn’t as persistent but is more balanced. Lots of fruit and spice going on here and says Oregon to me. What a nice vintage. Good tannins on this too. Does show more sweetness but nice purity. (90 pts.)

Thanks for the comparison notes, Jason. Both are good wines but as the La Grive Bleue is half the price of the Antica Terra…I have a lot more LGB!

Jason,
Thanks for the notes. It’s been a couple months now since I’ve had the grive bleue, but I’m amazed to hear it described as subtle aromatics. I’ve found the wine to have explosive red fruit on the nose, something that’s really drawn me into the wine. I’m curious if it could have changed that fast, I might have to pop another one to see.

Both great wines either way, nice idea to pair them blind.

Thanks for the notes on the Antica Terra. I’ve been contemplating pulling the trigger on several of those.

I look forward to more thoughts on both wines.

Andrew, thanks for the comment. I had the wine over 2 days and maybe the subtlety was accentuated by being next to the Antica Terra. Or maybe just a little bottle variation.

Jason

J,
That makes sense, I didn’t really fully take in that detail for some reason. Maggie’s wines are much bigger in general, though I have only tasted the 07 antica once.
