Seo,
I’ve had the same experience as you… so much so that I put a few bottles up on CC, but no one wanted them . Didn’t have time for a decant and just popped it at a restaurant. Maybe I need to pop another and give it a healthy 4hr+ decant before the 07 mailer hits. Then again, I thought the 05 Ovid rocked while many here thought it sucked.
i don’t know man. my AC was 24/7 beginning May 2006 and didn’t go off until Oct. PG&E bill was INSANE that summer as nighttime temps were often 3-digit past 9PM. riding that summer and fall in Napa & Sonoma was really warm even early in the AM.
This was a grower’s year," said NVV Hugh Davies, winemaker for Schramsberg Vineyards, “and thanks to excellent agricultural practices, the quality of varieties across the board appears spectacular.”
It did get better as time went on, but 1 bottle split between 4 people you can guess it only lasted about a hour. I guess I’ll crack another maybe this weekend. As for the Ovid, I could pick up a lot of the Cab Franc influence which might turn people off but I didn’t find it “zin-like” as I read in some comments on CT.
I wouldn’t say zin either. More akin to the highly alcoholic Aussie fruit bombs from Mollydooker. Granted it has been a year since I tried an Ovid and it might have settled down a bit. Still have two bottles of the '05 resting.
No bias there! NVV is a trade organization that promotes the region, so it’s no surprise they would say this. They also said this: “For Chardonnay, many growers were happy to have a bit of botrytis in the crop as an added flavor layer, thanks to the rains.” Uh, no thank you!
I thought I’d revive this thread. With the upcoming mailer I decided to pop another one to check it out again last Saturday. Last time we drank it in a less than ideal environment and didn’t give it much air time. Started off with a small pour- nice, fairly simple nose of red & black fruit, a little oak toast, faint alcohol, big mouthfeel w/ lots of grip. Pretty tight. Decanted the nearly full bottle and checked in on it hourly. Got the same impressions until around hour 3-4, when it seemed to put on a little weight, a bit darker fruit, more minerality, tannins softened a bit. Nice. Now on hour 6+ it had closed up a bit w/ more alcohol peeking out. Similar impressions to hour 1. Overall both myself and the other guy that drank with me felt this was a good wine, but didn’t have much of a “wow” factor. Different palates? Perhaps, although he’s a fruit junkie (hourglass, SQN, etc)… Personally I favor wines heavier on the earth/ funk/ herbs, etc but do appreciate a good fruity cali cab as well, so I don’t think that’s it. On the fence about the 07. Any similar experiences?
Dan…like youI favor wines heavier on the earth/ funk/ herbs and dirt profiles and the Maybach is not that kind of wine. I first tried it last year in Texas…Bill, you brought that wine?? I liked it so much I emailed Chris Maybach and ordered 4 bottles. I had my second bottle this past December. It reminds me a bit like a HSS wine. Personally I think it’s a powerful yet elegant wine with a lot of balance. Polished and lush tannins with loads of chocolate and dark fruit on the palate. And while I do prefer wines with the profiles I mentioned, I thought the Maybach was an outstanding wine.
I’ve had the 2004 and the 2006 both twice. First time opened up the 2004 way too early. Opened up the second one at the time of the 2005 mailer to give it a second chance - and was blown away. Love the style (agree with AnthonyA’s notes).
