A local retailer is hawking the 05 Yquem “on sale” for $700, marked down from $874, and I was a little surprised. Then I checked winesearcher and saw that it mostly retails here in the US for $700-1000 (and a few north of $1,000). At least, that’s the listed retail price.
Really? Is anyone actually buying this wine these days in this range of prices?
Oh, and if you are the one actually buying at this price, you can just be anonymous and say a friend of a friend told you his cousin was buying it…
ack, I’ve seen the 01 in 750s going for in the 650 range the last time I checked. 700-1000 seems way too much for a d’yquem that is decades away from drinking

It’s like the folks who submit the low-ball opening bids for several lots before an auction starts. Maybe they get nothing, but maybe they get wine they wanted for much less than retail. And it costs them nothing to try…
