2004 native9 Pinot Noir Rancho Ontiveros Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley (4/1/2016)
Color is showing its age. Very strong aromas. Earthy, smokey and leathery. But ultimately it is the citrus that comes through. Oranges for sure. On the palate I got sweet cranberries. Big acidy. Tannins present but somewhat light. Some heat. Certainly this is a worrisome vintage but this is very good. And the vineyard produces such tasty fruit. This is big and aggressive and not for everyone. The quality is high and the balance is in the pocket. (91 pts.) -
2006 Copain Pinot Noir Hacienda Secoya - USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley (3/28/2016)
I thought this wine would hold up better and perhaps bring on some more development. Didn’t really happen and my guess is there is not enough structure to get around the corner. Aromatics were light. A bit of dried flowers. Really have to coax it out. Every so often a glimps of something nice. Perhaps improving with air. Mid palate is pretty juicy. Dark cherries. Finish is getting better but is a bit bitter. The acid is there but the wine is very soft. And with the flavors being aggressive it needs more structure. One of those times when I look back at my original note and say, why didn’t I just drink them all then. (86 pts.) -
2009 Westrey Chardonnay Oracle - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills (3/25/2016)
Very present oak on the nose but not over the top. Flinty aromas. Great viscous mouthfeel. Medium/full throttle and it really works. Had over 4 nights. Held up just fine. (89 pts.)
Cheers,
Jason
