'03 Verget Chassagne-Montrachet & a simple Laurent Bourgogne

  • 2003 Verget Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes Caniculus - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru (6/1/2009)
We decided to open this to cap a fantastically sunny weekend here in Sammamish WA, (Seattle). I had rather low expectations for this considering the premox plague that seems to be hitting white burgundies these days. That and it’s an '03. I was very pleasantly surprised! While this won’t win any awards for ripping acidity it wasn’t clumsy and fat either. I’d say the acid profile was just right, a bonus considering the vintage. The nose was powerful showing smoke and bacon fat. The palate had a lovely thick texture with more of that smoke and bacon fat. The ample finish trailed off with hints of butterscotch. What a great way to end a hot summer weekend! (92 pts.)

Simple red fruits with a hint of green on the nose. The green reminds me of freshly cut tomato leaves, (as opposed to green pepper.) The palate also shows a blast of simple red fruits with rough/rustic tannins and mouthwatering acid on the finish. Pretty nice value for the $13 bucks I paid, I wouldn’t go over $20-$25 on it though.
