In a separate thread we’ve discussed whether wines truly tighten up, close, shut down, go dumb - choose your favorite phrase.
Interestingly enough, a friend tells me to stay away from opening 2003 Cornas, Cote-Rotie and Hermitage because they’ve “gone tight as a drum.”
Has anyone had an '03 Northern Rhone of late? Any reason to think they’re all dumbed up? I suspect bottle variation, but my sample size is about nil.
I can’t speak to many Northern Rhone '03s but the La Mouline we had back in August was certainly not shut down. Two hour decant was sufficient cause several wine epiphanies. http://dat.erobertparker.com/bboard/showthread.php?t=209052" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I don’t know if that wine will ever shut down, but I suspect it may go through a phase where the intense chocolate, espresso, mocha, vanilla characteristic of its treatment may take center stage, only to revert back to its floral, decadent, cherry/olive/cassis wonderfulness. Darryl, when are we doing 2941 again? Let’s forget the desert wine and just go Mouline vs Turque! ![worship [worship.gif]](/uploads/db3686/original/2X/9/99a8907a1d5b3c023582052741dc72dc9823c044.gif)
Faryan,
The problem is that without those awesome coupons I can’t afford to drink the good stuff. I still feel stupid that we only had one.

I am confused by your rating scale.
Sierra Carche, at 76 points, is less than 1 star. What does that mean?
Here’s what happens when you tighten up:
