'02 Grivot - Echezeaux

2002- GRIVOT - Echezeaux - dark magenta/ black color.

Enticing nose with some detracting tar, but a melange of orange & berries, that is quite unique and interesting.

One of those rare wines with a complex nose, all the tannin resolved, yet someone muted on the palate.
Does this need more time ?

I have limited experience with this producer, maybe someone else can chime in ?

Josh,

While generally nicely open and approachable on release, these wines shut down hard and take a long time to come around. In that sense, they are somewhat like Hudelot-Noellat but much more concentrated and structured. For instance, recent bottles of 2001 V-R Bossières and C-M Combe d’Orveau have been virtually impenetrable and so was the 1999 Boudots. If I had this wine in some quantity, I’d try in 2018 or so.

By the way, this wine has gotten an upgrade of sorts lately, as a chunk of land in the very good “Rouges du Bas” part of Échezeaux has reverted back to the domaine through Etienne Grivot’s maternal side of the family. I think the grapes were used in 2009 for the first time.
