2001 Vietti Barolo Castiglione - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (6/30/2016)
The color is getting pretty brown. Dried cherries and roses on the nose. Intriguing aromatics. The palate is lovely although it seems fragile. The fruit is starting to dry out and the tannins are still very present. Nice leathery elements. Balsamic notes that increased with air. For some reason this is the first time I have opened a bottle of this and will drink my last bottle soon. (91 pts.) -
2013 Lucia Syrah Susan’s Hill - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands (6/30/2016)
So dark, thick and viscous. The glass gets painted by this stuff. I had this over 4 days and often gave it a lot of air in the glass. Early on the aromatics were lacking and showing reduction. With time that cleaned up but still a bit on the reserved side. Flavors of dark fruits and salt. Good balance for the style which is full throttle. The tannins are strong. Full bodied. Not too sweet or jammy. On the fourth day there was a more sweat fruit but the tannins were big. A bit lacking on acidity. (88 pts.)
Cheers,
Jason
