2020 Falltacular Main Event--Saturday, 2/22/2020 at my place in the OC

#1 Post by Frank Murray III » November 20th, 2019, 9:03 am

Happy holidays everyone. This is a heads-up to the Wine Berserker community about February's event, this to be our 13th annual. For those who want to learn more about the event, you can click last year's link below to read about some of the feedback.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=155900&hilit=Falltacular

After Thanksgiving, I will be posting details about how you can sign up to attend, the costs, the payment methods, etc. If you are wanting to attend, I do expect the event to sell out quickly so please do act promptly once you see my announcement. For now, just know that we appreciate all of you, those who helped us raise just under $50,000 last year, as we inch closer to the 1/2 million dollar mark raised for our charity, Laura's House. https://www.laurashouse.org/

Any questions, please PM me or post here.

David, happy to have you. As Bruce will tell you, don't delay on paying for your ticket once I make the call for people to do that. It's going to sell out quickly again I suspect. Thanks for the support too and hope to meet you at the event.

To the Falltacular family, an update about the 2020 registration process. This year, we will eliminate the mailing of checks and we'll be using a special URL that is tied to the Laura's House website. This means you will do everything online, with a credit card payment, automating our process and immediately also generating for you a tax deductible receipt. I will be providing this link the week after Thanksgiving but wanted to let you know about this key change.
Happy holidays to all of you.

Electronic payments. Awesome. How sad that FedEx will not receive $20 x 100 attendees = $2000 from the event. Maybe therefore we increase the donation to Laura's house and include the FedEx contribution? [cheers.gif]

Ok everyone, time to buy your tickets for Saturday. Please carefully read the instructions below as there are some changes in how to handle payment for the event in 2020. For our 13th year, we are fortunate and blessed that all of you continue to attend and the wineries stay with us too, providing the fuel for the event. Cutting to the chase, here is the donation process:

DATE/TIME/LOCATION. Saturday, 2/22/2020 @ Noon. We hold the event at my house in the OC--if you need the address, PM me please.

COST and ATTENDANCE. $100 per person, a max of 140 total paid guests. You may buy up to 2 tickets, but that is the max. If you have others in your party that wish to attend, I respectfully ask that you have them book their tickets on their own. Please consider absorbing the credit card fee at checkout. This keeps your entire donation with Laura's House.

PAYMENT. We are going electronic this year, so I will need everyone to donate via the Laura's House website. This automates everything for us, a first for Falltacular. Click on the link that follows and make your donation. Once per week, I will post a list of who has paid so that you have peace of mind that your tickets are confirmed. We will start a wait list after 140 paid, and we'll address that topic as we get closer to the event. Note--do NOT mail a check, as it will be sent back to you. https://secure.processdonation.org/Laur ... 8H42E1BCHC

For those who are new or wish to learn more, there is an FAQ, which can be found using this Dropbox link https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0. We also have our Facebook page called OCFalltacular. It's where you can see photos from past years and interact in another platform if that is what you prefer. I will again use the Facebook page to incorporate the same messaging and event updates that you will find here on Wine Berserkers. Not everyone uses or visits both sites so you may use either (or both) to interact about the event and post things for others to see, and to obtain event info as we draw closer. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1390241461006038/

Thank you all for the many years of support, and to Todd, for this forum, as it has been the driver of the event's success and we march on together for another year! As I said last year, and I mean it with all due respect.....love you, Frenchie.

PS--yes, we will do the annual Friday BYOB pre-event dinner, which is now posted as a separate thread both here in the Offline Planner, as well as our Facebook page. We do not require you to attend the main Saturday event if you only wish to attend the Friday dinner.

Well last year I was indecisive and it sold out in a flash. This year I was on the fence. Have been doing a lot of travelling already and am also trying to buy a place in SC. But I have always been intrigued and through some minor peer pressure decided to attend. It was from gentle urging from Mike Grammer whom I just met in NY at Berserkerfest, and also at the suggestion from our esteemed Mike Stoneking, whom I have corresponded with, but never met as I was involved in doing my small part to help him rebuild his house and life after his home was lost. What better place to meet and pop a few corks than for another great cause. If it was travelling coast to coast for good wine I might pass, but the comraderie and the great cause make the hassle of flying worth the effort ! So no waffling this year, I am in and can't wait to sample some great wine hook up with a few old friends and meet several new ones. Paid up for both events. Thank you Frank for arranging this once again for a worthy cause. I know the amount of work involved is enormous, but the help to your community is immense.

Folks, the Saturday event is Sold Out. Wow. In less than 24 hours we sold 144 tickets. Shortly I will be placing the file up on Dropbox to show all of the payments so you can see who had paid.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0

We have closed the registration link and have put a note there for people to contact me if they want to talk about attendance, i.e. a wait list. We'll deal with those as they come to me.

Thank you all for an amazing 24 hours. I had no idea the event had churned up this much momentum in all of you.

THANK YOU.

And, we have Falltacular double-sided spit cups! The Falltacular logo on one side, the Laura's House logo on the other. These cups now eliminate the use of the horrible, plastic throw-away red cups that are so often a part of wine events. Along with this eco improvement, we continue to be an event that has eliminated plastic water bottles the past 4 years, and all of the wine shippers used to move the wine to the event, all of these are collected and given to local wine shops for reuse. And finally, in over a decade, we have never used a plastic plate or any flatware, instead using reusable plates, forks and other utensils year after year.

We can't be perfect but we can do our part to reduce waste and think about the environment that we all impact.

I want to thank Mike Stoneking, Ted, Debbie Cetin, Patty Bucklen, Thomas Kimura and Arnie Caplan for each donating $50 to cover the cost of our new cups. For every person that attends on Saturday, a purple spit cup cup will be yours, along with your custom wine glass!
Happy holidays to everyone.

Happy holidays to the Falltacular family. Hope you all are having an excellent season, and looking forward to a safe and happy New Year.

After the New Year, I am going to rapidly get going on the remaining pieces of the event, in part the Silent Auction commitments. I have updated our Event File with some additional commitments, with thank you to those who you see listed on the file. Of note, if you are a Napa Cab fan or a Cayuse lover, you will enjoy Arnie Caplan's generous donations. You can see all of that info by clicking the link below:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0

Should you have commitments to the Silent Auction you want to add, please start making those decisions and letting me know. The auction raises about 2/3rds of what we collect during the event, so it's a key driver of our success.

More to come soon, so for now, enjoy the rest of the holiday season and god bless.

+1 on Myriad, Mike. Leah, we enjoyed the Cabernet Sauv at last year's event. Maybe opportunity to taste the Syrah as well?

Good morning to the Falltac family. Wanted to let everyone know I am posting the file update in a few mins to Dropbox, to get you caught up on things. The winery commitments are now being added to the file, and the silent auction items are growing quickly.

A big thanks to Leah Smith of Myriad Cellars for their multiple donations. If you like their wines, as many of you do, then you're gonna see some fantastic items from Leah and Mike to bid on. Have a look at the list. And as a side note, I know Edit Komberg won the private tasting to see Leah and Mike after last year's Falltacular and they had a great time.

Thanks a lot everyone and here is the Dropbox link if you want to peruse the silent auction and winery committed wines as of this morning. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0

Hello to the Falltacular family. Want to share some cool event news with you about next month.

Every year, and for many years passed, we have asked a survivor of domestic violence to share their personal story during Falltaular Saturday. For many of you, this has been a moving moment, calling on you to act in various ways, motivated by the extreme hardship, pain and ultimate recovery of the women who have been brave to share their journeys with us. It's in part what continues motivating me to do Falltacular every year.

This year, we are going to change things up a bit. We are pleased to have Don Barnes give our live talk next month. Who is Don? Many of you may know him as our Orange County Sheriff, and he is also a Laura’s House Board Member. He will talk to all of about how he sees domestic violence affecting our community and share his perspective as both a professional in law enforcement and an active advocate.

Men have a key role to play in the DV solution and there is no better person to speak on the POV of how this topic affects all of us than Don, and the impact it has on the men and women of the OCSD who have to confront this topic day after day.

We look forward to Don's talk, and he looks forward to meeting you next month.

That sounds like a great idea.

Have you considered getting a microphone and a speaker for that portion of the event? The only drawback sometimes in that part of the event is that it's hard for everyone to hear.

But I don't know Don, maybe his voice doesn't need it. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Yes, Counselor. We used one last year and will do it again next month, as it helps the folks in the back of the yard hear it, too.

Yes Mike, thank you again for another year of supporting us via your lodging leadership. Appreciate it, as do so many others.

More broadly to everyone, I have updated the event file, which you can find by clicking the link below which will take you to Dropbox. We continue to track very well with commitments, now very close to 100 different wines committed to the inside of the house and just crossing the 200 items mark for the silent auction in the garage.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0

I still need some volunteers for the house to help during the event so if you can do one hour for us, please reply or drop me a note and I can place you where I need you. You're welcome to view the volunteer schedule if you open the event file via Dropbox and locate the correct tab.

Also, if you're going to commit items to the silent auction, the deadline is going to 2/14. We need to print the bid sheets ahead of time and so we please send me your commitments. We don't need the actual items until the day of the event, but you are welcome to hand them off to me sooner if you like, just as Ki Punwar did yesterday...thank you, Ki.

Finally, as with past years, and as we had to do in 2017, I have secured a contract for the backyard tent. We wish for clear weather of course but if it rains, we will have the BBQ area covered. Should we tent, we will have to figure out a Plan B for food, as we got lucky in 2017 and we're able to open the sides of the tent to vent out the area. If it is actually raining during the event, it's likely we cannot BBQ.
More to follow soon, thanks everyone.

Good morning. Just wanted to share a few visuals with the Falltac family, and thank Jamie Kutch for some creative things for the event. Below are two photos. One is of a mix of Kutch things you can bid on at the event. The Falstaff Jelly (made by Judy Falstaff) and the Falstaff Brandy (made by Jamie, this is the first production) are both unicorn items, and the t-shirt is a fave of mine that people often comment on when I wear mine around.

The other item is a oak barrel head that has been converted into a lazy susan that can be placed on your table, with items on top and then rotated. These are great for meals and dining when people are around the table. It's one of a kind, made especially for Falltac. We've never had anything like it before.

Thanks again Jamie for the support and cool stuff to augment the silent auction. PS (apologies you have to twist your head to see these....!)

Good morning. We're less than 3 weeks away and we've had a # of winery commitments and also silent auction items added to the event since I last posted an update. To view the entire list of wines and items, you can click the link below to get caught up. In sum, we're approaching our initial goal for Silent Auction items (to match or exceed 2019s' initial starting aggregate of $15,000) and for wines poured in the house (130 is the target).

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0

Of note, we have a # of guests and wineries who all will be passing the Decade of Support milestone this year. We will be honoring each of those folks during the event in a few weeks. A special thank you goes out to them, and so many of you who have previously joined our Decade of Support family. THANK YOU!

As a reminder, I need to wrap up silent auction donations so if you're wanting to be a contributor, please send me an email or message as to the silent auction items you wish to donate.
