What 2008 Champagne Are You Buying?

#1 Post by Steve L Gellman » November 10th, 2019, 4:52 pm

With all the hype about the 2008 vintage I was wondering what producers people were buying. I’ve decided I want to add more champagne to my cellar

Just bought some Remy Massin. Have a bit of Dom, considering Cristal.

Waiting on Taittinger Comtes de Champagne to come in, assuming I'll go big there. May buy a couple Veuve to try based on some notes I have seen.

Yong. With respect, a mistake. It’s the real deal. I also bought strongly in 1996, loving them young, and it has proved to be a great decision. No vintage since, until 2008, had me as excited after not just hype but tasting.

Steve, have you had 2008 Bolly, we sell it and I am ashamed to say I haven't had time to try it. The other 3 you list are all reputedly killer, so this one sparks my curiousity.

Calling Brad Baker too on Bolly.....is this vintage a stock up vintage and no winemaking issues?

I had the 08 La Grande Dame this week and preferred it to the 08 Dom. I'll probably get some of the Taittinger CdC once it's on the market.

I see. Maybe I will add a bit more then. If you don't mind me asking which producers have you bought or planned to buy? Thanks.

Forgot to mention the vintage Veuve rosé. It's one of the few rosé champagnes I like. The 08 is just stunning right now.

Pretty sure he was skeptical still of Bollinger (other thread), but said changes were coming that give some hope for long term aging. I forget what thread that was and I’m not sure when the changes were to be implemented?

Steve
A very smart time to get into Champagne. 2008 is no doubt one of the better vintages. I used to own only a small handful of producers. Mainly Dom and Krug. Over the past few years caught the Champagne bug big time.

The 08 Dom might be their best vintage yet. Originally bought 10 btls then opened the first one at a NY offline last month and it was stunning.Went and bought 6 more it is so good. Cristal totally hit it out of the park. The 08 Veuve is superb and reasonably priced for the quality. Also have picked up a half dozen or so small growers many of which I had been unfamiliar with until now.

Best advice of where to buy and whose palate to trust is get yourself on Envoyer's list in Ca. and when they send out their email blasts trust Greg's palate and I doubt you will be disappointed. They sell usually on pre arrival so you will receive your wines in about a year or so. I have bought about 6 cases of Champagne and white burgs from them that are now in my cellar. Their prices cant be beat. They direct import everything and are quite reliable.

Lastly whatever you buy purchase multiples as they will he delicious young but save a few for 10 years or more down the road when they will develop greater complexity.

It’s likely out of the market, but if you happen to see the 2008 Chartogne Taillet Heurtebise, don’t hesitate. It’s my favorite Champagne this year and that includes the 08 Dom. Released several years ago, though.

I bought as much as my budget would allow. Dom P, Pierre Peters, Vilmart, Cristal, Aubrey, Soutiran, and anything else I can grab. Waiting on the 2008 Comtes.

I opened the 2008 Grand Annee a couple months ago. I thought the wine showed all the characteristics of the vintage...power, balance, and showing signs of already drinking well. Will it perform for the long haul...at $135 I'm not sure how many years I'm looking to hang on to it. I'm not a huge fan of Dom...but bought six of the '08 and loved it already. And I found the best of the bunch was Cristal (though needing the longest time in the cellar). I'm also thinking of picking up 2006 Krug as well...HDH had it for $1800 for 6 bottles.

Agreed. In my lifetime, I think the 4 great vintages have been 1982, 1985, 1996 and 2008. 2002 probably belongs on that list too but the wines are bit too fat and opulent for my tastes though they will be long distance runners. 2012 may deserve a place at the table as well- let's see what the big boys are like when released. In the grower realm, plenty of 2012s to love.

As for the original question, I am deepest on Dom Perignon, Philipponnat and Guy Larmandier in 2008. Taittinger may be a contender once I can taste the Comtes (and assuming the attempted massive price jump with 2007 is not attempted again). Cristal was outstanding too, but just not to my personal liking. The Roederer 08s- Vintage Brut, Rose and Blanc de Blancs- are outstanding. Very much worth a look if you can still find them. 08 Taittinger Millesime is another head-turner, though largely gone from the market by now. Worth a search.

Vilmart, Philipponnat, Dom, Krug 164, plus will buy Taittinger CDC as many others have opined. I’d recommend looking at all the vintage Philopponnat wines, not just the CDG. The Mareuil-sur-Ay is fantastic.

Most frustrating for me is the staggered release cycles of Champagne. Taittinger not out yet, but the smaller/grower wine makers are not just out of the market but out for many years. Unless you only like the big marks, you’ve already missed the vintage. As a recent convert, I’m really sad to have missed, eg. Agrapart, Chartogne-Taillet, Cedric Bouchard, and Vilmart GCdO.

I find this interesting. A glass of 08 VC Grand Dame last week was lacking in elegance. An NV orange label with a few years of age achieves the same purpose as an aperitif. I bought a couple of the 08 vintage veuve (not LGD) and will see how that does in 3-5 years. Their style is so astringent and linear, and I prefer broader, rounder champagnes. In that light, the 08 Bollinger LGA is absolute magic. It has bready notes and baked pear like you wouldn't believe. Impeccably balanced

I had 08 Dom beside 08 Cristal (last year, right on release) and preferred the Dom in youth. Cristal was crisp and LASER focused with great purity, but the Dom was straight up delicious out of the bottle. Cristal may be longer lived, but I chose to keep my glass full with Dom on this particular day.

I have a few bottles of 08 LGA and Dom in the cellar and won't touch for 5-10. I'm also a buyer of 08 CdC when it releases, hopefully <$130.

For 08 I’m deepest in dom (>10 cases and still buying), cristal, veuve, and a smattering of other stuff like chetillons, vilmart cdc, bollinger ga, pol roger brut and swc, legras rsv, diebolt Vallois fleur de passion, but >95% in the first 3 which i bought in multi case quantities. Buying 08 champagne is like doubling down on an 11. Regret not buying more 96s when I had a chance. Costco had 96 dom by the pallet back in the day for ~90.

I've bought 08 Dom, 08 Cristal, and Krug 164 in some quantity (at least for me; I've never bought more than a case of anything). Krug 164 is probably my favorite of the three. Additionally, the 08 Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee is phenomenal and I really wish I'd bought more that just a few bottles.

I tried a bottle of the 2008 Dom and found it very good, nice complexity and cut, while being more or less open for business now (some purists might disagree). But a real crowd pleaser at this stage...

I tried the 2008 Agrapart Avizoises in 2016, and that was stunning, although also hard to even drink because its searing acidity and youth. But what a wine, sold me on the 2008 vintage right there...

A LOT. It's our wedding year and given the quality of the vintage, we went very long. CT currently says 211 bottles of 71 wines, and I'm sure I'll find a few more yet.

I like to joke to my wife that we gauge our love by the amount of Champagne in the cellar. Judging my her level of enablement, I'm not sure if she thinks it's a joke. champagne.gif flirtysmile

LGD and Rose are excellent.
One of the few lines of yours I just have to disagree with. I thought the LGD was good, but perhaps not the best value given what else is out there. I had it one someone else's dime, but it's like $170 a Total Wine in Dallas. I'm not sure it's worth the buy at that price or even around that price.

As for the vintage Veuves, I found both the 2008s, the brut and rose, to be rather serious disappointments. I did not find either particularly smooth, complex, or well integrated and posted notes of both here.

If I was going to spend my money on a Veuve wine, I would buy the Extra Brut Extra Old. I found the Extra Brut Extra Old to be a level or two above the vintage wines, and nearly on par or there with LGD.

Yeah, so far with our purchasing rate, that hasn't been a problem. She's an enabler as I said. But at some point, that inflection point occurs for sure. But hopefully both us and the Champagne will be gracefully aged at that point :)

Oh, and her fave is LGD, so we're nicely stocked on that. And paid WAY less than $170.

2008 Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill - only my second time having this vintage of SWC. Toasty aromas with yellow citrus and light floral notes. Rich palate with great acidity. Drinks extremely well already but I suspect it will stay that way for twenty plus years. Staggering minus

Unfortunately, there was a significant price increase.

Cristal, Dom, Bonville Belles Voyes, Launois Special Club, Comtes when it is released, possibly Krug if it is released. Trying to get a jump on the grower 2012s.

I see you can get it on K&L for like $140. Still not sure I'm game at that price, but it's better than $170 where I am firmly out.

No vintage 2008 Krug, according to AG.

Whatever you do, don't buy the Paul Bara or Gimmonet '08 Special Clubs. Total garbage.

No major holdings of any, but I have a few bottles of: Pierre Peters Chetillions, Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee, Cristal, Dom, La Grande Annee, Diebolt-Vallois Fleur de Passion & Delamotte. And a few Krug 164, if that counts. The only thing I'm waiting for is Comtes, sad to see the price on Egly - not going to do it.

Yea I did see that posted here. FWIW I asked the Krug rep at a champagne tasting last month and he could neither confirm nor deny but said he would be surprised if the vintage isn't declared.

Noticed that there was no mention of Billecart.

I am a novice when it comes to champagne, but I have always enjoyed their rose, and had a 2002 reserve that was wonderful.

Whats the general reputation on them? Do they possess a decent QPR? Also, any word on them releasing a 2008 vintage?

Another LVMH winemaker confirmed to a friend that there would not be any 2008 Krug.

If you have 10 cases of DP, what is your plan with Comtes?

I’ll probably buy some but I’m not so big a fan of it, my wife likes it so we’ll probably put away a case.

I bought 34 different champagnes from 2008, but mostly one or two bottles of any one wine. The exceptions:
  • Case+ purchases of Cristal, Dom Perignon, and Vilmart Coeur de Cuvée.
  • Near case purchases of Pierre Peters Chetillon and Philipponnat 1522
  • Five bottles of Philipponnat Clos des Goisses
  • Two Pol Roger Winston Churchill, Bollinger La Grande Année, Vilmart GCdO, and Veuve Cliquot La Grande Dame.
I've tried the Vilmart CdC, Cristal, Dom and Veuve LGD. The DP and Vilmart Coeur are stunning already and two of my WsOTY. I expect to be rhapsodic about the Cristal in time. While I enjoyed the LGD, to my palate it wasn't at the level of the other tête du cuvées.

Cheers,
Warren
