Tried the 2013 X-block Syrah tonight. Too much oak for my palate. I guess time will tell if it integrates with cellaring. I have doubts but can’t complain at $16/bottle.

I did not really remember curry. I will have to keep that in mind when I open the next bottle. I really enjoyed it. Reminded me of a subtle sherry. Definitely for the adventurous. But I did not pour any of my first bottle down the drain. It is a nice aperitif sipping wine. Also went well with Asian food.

Cracked a sparkling Vermentino tonight. Nothing crazy complex but enjoyable, particularly for the price. Apple and lemon lime, went well with our Thai dinner.

Had the Sparkling Vermentino and found it very fine for the $14. Very fresh and bright with balanced acid but definitely crisp. Citrus fruits But not enamel stripping. Nice for an porch sipper or mimosa maker.

Opened a sparkling Vermentino this evening with paella. I really like this one for the money. Actually drinks better at a cool room temp with some time to let the effervescence calm down. Nice creamy apple, lime, biscuit notes.

Popped the cap on one of these tonight and totally agree. A really nice wine, especially for the price. Lots of bright lime and lemon notes with a bit of bread, and a slightly bitter (in a good way) finish. Would have crushed these by the pool all summer long.

Word to the wise, this bottle opened up ANGRY! Just a ton of effervescence that spilled out onto the counter for a good 40 seconds.

Just got mine, and opened a 375 of 2014 Cigare Volant. Really nice, especially for $9.

Yeah, no kidding! When I popped it, I had to check myself to think if I had unnecessarily agitated the bottle or something. I found the wine a lot more enjoyable after it had calmed down a bit.

Right! I'd never seen anything like it. Just literally wouldn't stop pouring out the top of the bottle. Good stuff though, especially after being open for a bit.

Sad update. Looks like they are closing the Davenport tasting room. Another sale though does not look as good as the last one.

Those Le Cigare Volant Réserve “en bonbonne" are certainly great $42 btls of domestic vino.

i picked up a varried collection of wines on this sale.....my favorite purchase so far has to be the 375's, especially the LCV's...the white is adequate - but the reds have made me exceptionally pleased. I've not dug into the 750's or the mags nor the higher end labels...as winter is here and these wines do well with winter foods in my house, i look forward to some great experiments. Really quite pleased I saw this and went long on the wines.

  • 2012 Bonny Doon Vineyard Syrah X-Block Bien Nacido Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley (12/20/2019)
    Definitely a bargain from the Bonny Doon sale. Overall I agree with CabFrancophile's note below. Olive tapenade was the dominant flavor for us, with some dark fruit and herbs in the background. The nose had some more complex floral and herbal notes too. Good acid, tannin mostly resolved. Was better after it had been open an hour or so.

I sat next to Randall when he poured that wine as part of a Rose panel at an LA Rhone Rangers event a number of years back. It was such a 'distinctive' wine and it really stood out - and I could not take my nose out of it. It smelled like a meal - day old curry, herbs. No fruit whatsoever - but so darned interesting.

Was it 'unpleasant' because it was 'faulty' or just 'different'? Curious to see how this has aged . . .

I wouldn’t say it’s faulty by any stretch. You buy a kitchen sink blend aged in the sun and you go in expecting the idiosyncratic.
Curry notes, green beans, thyme maybe, notes of Madeira.
Poured it for a group of four, adventurous drinkers all, and it was basically sip, sip, drain. It wasn’t gross and it was fun to try, but life’s too short to drink wine that tastes like curry. [cheers.gif]
Ok -- just opened another one of these and I definitely get the curry now! I really find this wine intriguing and fun to drink. Definitely not for everyone -- my significant other turned her nose up quite quickly, remembering how she disliked it the first time.

Opened my bottle tonight. It’s.... different. I get a little curry, but what jumped out to both me and my wife was weak Sherry, the Sherry that’s not sweet and tastes like toasted nuts. Dark gold color, sort of like apple sauce, and a little cloudy. Lots of sediment in the bottle.

We had a glass before dinner, and, as I said, it was different. A bit challenging to drink on its own. But we ordered Indian - Tiki Masala, Palak Paneer - and it paired well, very well. Now I have a glass or so leftover, and it’s different.

Interesting experience.
