Popped another one of these, and it's seriously a steal of a cab for $21. Layered and fairly complex mouthfeel, and while full bodied, it retains a sense of 'lightness' that you dont typically find in CA cabernet at this price point. And I swear....I get some of that dusty Rutherford thing. A big time winner in my book.

Are there any other $21 cabs you've found to be better? Would legitimately be down to try them if you have.Nate Simon wrote: ↑October 4th, 2018, 8:21 pmTwo bottles opened, not too impressed here. Just my 2¢.

I drank another one last week and enjoyed it.
For a 2016 it's already got a lot of fruit. Doesn't seem to need bottle ageing.

Yep, definitely agree with that. This wine has 'house cab' written all over itMike Kuller wrote: ↑October 4th, 2018, 8:40 pmI drank another one last week and enjoyed it.

This wine is making me question some of my future allocations. Juice is solid. That Berlinger Knights Valley was damn good as well

FWIW - long gone in my area (WA). Wine guy acknowledged agitated in a couple, but noted they disclosed it on the back of the label. SLD did not disclose and he said he wasn’t able to share... and we had a great 15 min conversation. He mentioned that he tried it “against $50/$60 bottles from the same producer and thought the Kirkland brand was better.” FWIW, he’s on the Cayuse list, so not a total stranger to good wine

Finally tried this last week. Oak overweighs the fruit IMHO. Persoanlly, I would save my money. I may or may not find something at that price that is better, but the cash would go toward something I like better. There are plenty of nice medocs out there......

So interesting to me, as I did not find the oak to stand out whatsoever. Maybe some bottle variation....but the 2 I've had were well balanced.Jim F wrote: ↑October 8th, 2018, 9:43 amFinally tried this last week. Oak overweighs the fruit IMHO. The Beringer Knights Valley is excellent as well. $19 in Chandler.
Re: TN: 2016 Kirkland Signature Series, Stags Leap District Cabernet
I have had the 2015 Beringer KV. I not too thrilled with that either to be honest. The KV was a favorite of mine for many, many years but the last several vintages have not been up to speed IMO. The ‘15 is a step above the last several, though. I used to buy these in case lots, and now, I keep trying each new release, but do not buy more. Maybe it is them, e.g., maybe the best juice now goes into KV reserve? Or maybe my tastes have changed.

My local Costco just got the 15 Oakville Signature Series in so I popped one tonight. For me, MUCH less inspiring than the Stags Leap District. Generic cab nose, sour cherry on the palate, and a fairly short finish with a bit of heat. I'll definitely stick with the SLD. $19.

Do you mean the 2016? The 2015 came out in January of this year.Rich Brown wrote: ↑October 11th, 2018, 8:36 pmMy local Costco just got the 15 Oakville Signature Series in so I popped one tonight. Re: TN: 2016 Kirkland Signature Series, Stags Leap District Cabernet
Just my 18 cents (it's rarely just 2 cents...), I really like the Substance wines from Charles Smith. For $12-$14, depending on the source, the "CS" bottling really over-delivers. I get some savoriness and tobacco, which is rare for such a bargain. Plenty of fruit, as well, but I find them to be more integrated/less disjoint than other bargain wines, even at young age. I think the 2016 is the current vintage and what I've been drinking. It's refreshing to have something Cab to grab and not even think twice about price/occasion/am I going to finish this bottle....
I don't even know what year it is, but true to the bargain and "ease" of this one, it doesn't even matter!

The SLD is $21.99 in Phx/Scottsdale. Surprised theres price differences across markets with their own Kirkland label??

I double checked and I did get the '15 Oakville, $18.99 in January of this year. The SLD was $21.99 at my Costco (Azusa) and they have had a good supply on hand.Rich Brown wrote: ↑October 12th, 2018, 11:43 amYep, it is the 15. Hopefully there’s strong enough demand (and grapes) to drive additional Kirkland AVA designation wines. Here’s hoping...imagine a Veeder or Howell version

I found the Rutherford NO where near as good as the Stags Leap. The ruth. tasted like a generic red.... disappointing.

Re: TN: 2016 Kirkland Signature Series, Stags Leap District Cabernet
No SLD in Boca. Only the 16’ Oakville. Also grabbed a OVZ and sauv blanc from the Kirkland label. At these prices, impulse buys are too easy

The rioja was in stock last time I was in. Haven't tried this year's version, but at $6.99 not a huge risk! (Last year's was a crowd pleaser.)

Re: TN: 2016 Kirkland Signature Series, Stags Leap District Cabernet
I usually buy the Rioja and Chianti Classico Riserva (which is made by Villa Cafaggio, a very solid producer). Both typically make great cooking wines, and they're just good enough that you can actually drink a glass or two as well. That said, this years 2015 CCR didn't impress me at all, which surprised me given the generally high quality of the '15 vintage in Tuscany. I also like the Kirkland Signature Chablis!Sherri S h a p i r o wrote: ↑June 26th, 2019, 5:26 am

This thread gives me hope for this board. I know the source of the grapes and the quality of the wine making for the SLD (and no I'm not naming names), and it's great to see good values called out regardless of the brand.

Kyle, do you by chance have any insight on a 17 SLD release and if it will be the same grapes/wine maker? Thanks!
