Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
Robert,
They normally always come wrapped in paper/plastic combo and then are inserted into a straw holder with the booklet in between. All bottles get it whether packed in a six pack (normally wooden) or a single wooden box. Each booklet corresponds to a particular bottle number in that release of the specific 1,911 bottles. If the straw was removed when you received them then the booklet would have also disappeared since nothing was there to hold it with the bottle.

Thanks! I contacted the retailer and they are sending me the booklet from the six pack I just ordered. Hope it’s the same lot I just had, will report back when I pop the next bottle.

- 2012 Dhondt-Grellet Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut Les Nogers - France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru (4/20/2019)
First of two. This is 100% Chard, 3 g/l dosage, disgorged March 2018. We spread this over 4 glasses, and the server had thought I wasn't drinking any so she really hit the first 3 glasses with big pours but I caught her in time so I could get 3-4 ozs. Initially, this came across with a polished, lightly complex frame, with fresh cut green apple, lemon and even a bit of pineapple. It seemed more flashy than structured, but as it sat and in the last few sips, it seemed to add some backbone which I appreciated. My hunch is that we drank this too quickly and it had to catch up, if that makes sense. Clean and drinking nicely, overall.
My WOTY candidates for 2019:
2014 Marie Courtin Eloquence BdB Extra Brut
2017 Rivers-Marie PN Platt SC
2017 Kutch Pinot Noir SC PN
2009 Roederer Cristal Brut
2017 Carlisle Zin Mancini Ranch RRV

1990 La Grande Dame (magnum) - This was drinking very well. Citrus and toasty notes. Creamy mouthfeel with soft and fine bubbles. There is also a nice acidic spine that adds some bounce to the creamy profile. Really good.

Shows the advantage of magnum format for sure, as these are showing tired from 750 in my experience.

- 2009 Louis Roederer Champagne Cristal Brut - France, Champagne (4/22/2019)
Drinking the last ounce or so from the bottle that was opened about 3 hours ago. It's pretty still now, but the wine is revealed with the air and the room temp, too. Gorgeous stuff. Stony, with lemon, apple. The balance on this is spot on. Acidity, just the right lift of fruit and structure. And the 2008 is suggested to be of higher caliber than this 2009? Really? I gotta buy some of the 2008 as this 2009 is awesome.

Dom 2008 hits Central Market (a very high end grocer) in the DFW Metroplex on the same weekend as their 25% off French Wine sale last weekend. DFW winos immediately go nuts, and the scramble to buyout stock began. An anonymous buyer dropped $10K at multiple locations to buy out every bottle on arrival. Thank goodness I snagged 4 from Costco. Got a 2008 Cristal for $187.50. Got 3 Krug 166emes.

Great post and it shows what you can do when you own your own vineyards and follow good, clean, sustainable farming practices (along with clean, pure winemaking). Size doesn't matter, owning your own land and doing your own farming in a proper way does. Most of the more well known negociants (Moet, Veuve, Bollinger, Taittinger, Charles Heidsieck, Krug, etc...) actually do this with their own vineyards, but when you have to purchase 50-70% of your grape supply, things get more complicated and fall apart. Roederer shows what is possible when you are 'big' and control your own destiny.

Brad, well said. As a bit of a drift but on topic I suppose, do you have any thoughts on the 2011 Vilmart CdC? I picked up a few and was thinking of doing one this weekend.

Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
Frank,
Just tried it for the first time a couple weeks ago. It is young and needs time in my book, but I feel this way about most Coeur de Cuvees. The 2007 is just now starting to fire on all cylinders for me and show seamless integration of all the different flavors in the wine. I think the 2011 is a great wine and another example of Vilmart performing well in a less than stellar vintage and a shining example of how good work in 2011 led to very good wines. The wine is full of fruit, but also a lot of tart structure and touches of oak right now. Since you have multiples, pop one to enjoy in its youth and get a feeling for all the ways it will grow over time. Enjoy it over a few hours and watch it change in the glass. I bet the last sip is the best.

I also have to add that I am shocked the 2011 Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee is already in the US. This was just released at the winery in the past month or so. Normally it takes a while for this to show up in the US. The positive side is that Vilmart will not sell or ship any Coeur unless it has at least one year of post-disgorgement age so even these early shipments should be in good shape.. End result is that you know the wine and dosage/liqueur are integrated when you purchase the wine.

I love all of my Vilmart CdC and GCd'Or, but had something different tonight.
NV (2010) Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines - France, Champagne (4/24/2019)
Wow, this was really good despite the difficult vintage (LC10). I guessed Pinot Meunier without seeing the label; crisp red fruit and floral elements. Great mineral notes and cut. The ample fruit made it seem sweet, but it's bone dry. It started angular, but fleshed out with time in the glass, showing creamy influence of oak aging. I have more in the cellar from a recent purchase; I'll have to check on the vintage.

Thanks for this note, Warren. I had the LC08 (2008 vintage) recently, and it was fantastic. I have some of the LC10 in my locker and have been wondering about it, as I haven't yet tasted a 2010-based Champagne that I've liked.Warren Taranow wrote: ↑April 24th, 2019, 8:25 pmNV (2010) Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut Les Beguines - France, Champagne (4/24/2019)

I also avoided 2010 Champagnes with a few exceptions: Prévost, and Vilmart CdC and GC Rubis. My initial impression of this wine wasn't entirely favorable although my wife liked it immediately. It grew on me as the dinner progressed.
Cheers,

2008 Guy Charlemagne Champagne Grand Cru Mesnillésime Vieilles Vignes Blanc de Blancs
Damn, I didn't remember what this was and didn't read my own tasting note before popping the cork. While fantastic now, this is a wine that would have been nice to lay down and open every five years for decades. Fairly dark yellow for an oh-eight, but full of verve and youth. Creamy lemon and orange, white flowers, great minerality. Lithe but full bodied from start to finish.
I made a mistake only buying four, and a bigger mistake opening two so early. The real deal, a tete-de-cuvée.

Two rose half bottles for comparison
Billecart Salmon Rose - essentially no info on the bottle. Raspberry and dried cherry. These seems a bit drier than 10 years ago, which is fine with me. Very nice, solid and consistent.
Roederer 2012 Rose. This house is on fire for me lately, between this, the incredible Cristal bottlings and the Starck Blanc De Blanc. This easily bested the Billecart. Explodes from the glass with great fruit but plenty of tension and acid. Super bright, round and refreshing. Excellent.

I couldn't agree more Steve with your comment re Roederer. Have you tried the 12` Brut yet? it is equally as fine as the rose which is currently one of my favs over all other rose options.Steve Nordhoff wrote: ↑April 30th, 2019, 7:07 amTwo rose half bottles for comparison

- NV Pierre Gerbais Champagne Prestige Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut - France, Champagne (5/3/2019)
My final bottle of several bottles I bought. The importer sticker is covering the back label so I am screwed for any bottle info. From what I recall, this is 100% Chardonnay and should be dosed around 6 g/l. Similar to previous bottles with a green apple, pear, bitter citrus and the same kind of tonic water quality in the finish. The latter quality fades away with air and the wine fattens more, rounding out. I continue to enjoy the Gerbais wines and wish I could see them return to the LA/OC area again. It's been some time since they have been for sale.

Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
I'm happy to see this. I have a few magnums pending from this producer (Extra Brut Grains de Celles Rose, Grains de Celles Extra Brut, and l’Audace Brut Nature). I was worried, because I was underwhelmed by their L'Osmose bottling. I went away from that bottle with the opinion I should avoid low dosage wines from them, several of which I had already ordered. Maybe they'll be better than I expected.Frank Murray III wrote: ↑May 3rd, 2019, 5:40 pmPosted from CellarTracker

Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
Warren, if you're referring to the mags that Greg offered a few months back, I bought into that offer, too. Just a single mag.
I don't believe (for my palate) L'Osmose is the best wine that Aurelien Gerbais is making. However, the Grains de Celles bottlings should be solid and a great value for cleanly farmed, Aube-based bubbly. He does a nice job with those wines. FWIW, I did ping Greg a few weeks ago about tracking down some 750s of the Gerbais range. We'll have to see if anything comes through.

Ployez-Jacquemart NV rose last night before dinner on the deck was very enjoyable, with a nice citrus back to it and some spicy notes on the finish. Very nice, though it will likely not be a reload for us when the 4 I bought are gone. They will be a pleasure to drink.

Maybe they'll be better than I expected.Frank Murray III wrote: ↑May 3rd, 2019, 5:40 pmPosted from CellarTracker
Cheers,
Warren

Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
Quick notes:
NV Lilbert (Extra) Brut BdB (50% 2015; 50% reserve) - creamy brioche; lilting and light.
2012 Philipponnat BdN - more depth / power here side-by-side with Lilbert. Shows the strong plummy fruit I find in BdN but integrated, and not quite the intensity or sheer thrill of something like an Eric Rodez BdN. Would gladly drink this regularly. Good at the table.

Very nice, though it will likely not be a reload for us when the 4 I bought are gone. They will be a pleasure to drink.
This is one of my favorite NV rosé champagnes. Fresh, fruity and minerally, with an elegant bead. I'm hoping to try one with a little bottle age, but our consumption rate limits that likelihood.

I’m a fan, too, partly because we had a great visit there last year and loved the people and wines. It’s not B-S brut rosé level, but for the $, it’s a super rosé. Step up to their d’Harbonville for a grand marque experience.Warren Taranow wrote: ↑May 5th, 2019, 7:49 amSarah,Sarah Kirschbaum wrote: ↑May 5th, 2019, 5:33 amPloyez-Jacquemart NV rose last night before dinner on the deck was very enjoyable, with a nice citrus back to it and some spicy notes on the finish. Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
I brought a magnum of 2006 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Rosé to a charity event last night. My wife and others at the table liked it; I was underwhelmed. It might have been the water glasses used, or maybe my palate was off (CT and critical notes are mostly praiseful). I perceived an unpleasant bitterness.

I would choose it over the Billecart-Salmon rose, which I find good enough, but not interesting or delicious enough to justify its price. The Ployez-Jacquemart was definitely priced nicely for the quality, and fun to drink, if not really exciting for me.alan weinberg wrote: ↑May 5th, 2019, 10:18 amI’m a fan, too, partly because we had a great visit there last year and loved the people and wines. Has anyone actually tried the Ployez-Jacquemart Liesse d’Harbonville?

Haven't had the '00, but have had the '90, '95, '96, '98 and '99.
The '96 is my favorite of the vintages I've had, but I've only had them two or three times each.

Ray—where do you think it ranks in the pantheon of Dom, Salon, Krug, Goisses, Cristal?

Alan,
I may not be being fair since I've only had five vintages a total of 16-18 times, and I find this cuvee to be excellent but I don't think it reaches the highs of the better vintages of the ones you listed.
As an aside and as you mentioned earlier, it is a great visit.

Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
The other night at the house with friends:
2002 Pommery Cuvée Louise Brut - has gained some depth in the year (to the day) since I last pulled a bottle, and is showing nicely. Light and bright is still the story, but there is some more complexity and rounder finish now. A very good starter champagne for drinking as guests arrive and before things get going, doesn't ask much of you and that's just fine.
2004 Dom Perignon - this too has benefited from the year+ since I last had it. On this night it showed smokey citrus and had a joyous feel in the mouth. Really a pleasure to drink, if not all that serious.
NV Egly-Ouriet rosé - always beautiful, and a fitting closer to the night after most guests had gone home. It had the stuffing and interest to be delicious even after a night of lots of wine and some eau de vie. Very much my style, puts me in my happy place.

JL Vergnon NV, disoraged 2017
Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
The Ployez-Jacquemart rose referred to a few times in this thread. Would that be the extra Brut or the selection rose?

Regarding Ployez-Jacquemart , I also recently tried their special club after purchasing it at the Tresors tasting room in Reims. I found it to be quite good and at the price point, also hard to beat!
Re: Which Champagne are you drinking?
How do you age your B-S? 5 years from purchase? As far as I’m aware, they don’t offer disgorgement infoalan weinberg wrote: ↑May 5th, 2019, 1:15 pm2 bottles made me find more. 2000 vintage. No notes but loved it. As for B-S rosé, I age it 5 years and then drink. Gains a lot.
