Damn! And that's 12 full cases from just one supplier. [highfive.gif]

I actually try to focus my buying with just a couple suppliers since I have limited amounts to spend and prefer to nurture one or two relationships rather than many.

The Climats and Lieux-dits of the Great Vineyards of Burgundy for only $99...that's the cheapest I've ever seen the English edition.

The prize of this offer was the ‘99 Leflaive BBM. Leflaive’s ‘99s are INSANE. Price was reasonable but too rich for me given my recent spending spree.

Any idea where all these back vintages come from? Is there a bizarro wine berserkers forum in Europe that they buy from and then peddle over here?

I would imagine most of those offers come from their current clients or referrals from current clients/suppliers.

If you like santenots, yes. It’s not my favorite vineyard. I’m not a big fan of angles either. I have some 15 Rossignol but I just find it less Volnay, which makes sense for Santenots because it isn’t in Volnay. i bought it because there were 375s, though. Probably should’ve bought more of those Pousse 15 Caillerets in 375.

I would say my holdings are chevrets = versueil = Caillerets > taillepieds > ducs/Clos de ducs > Chenes >>>> santenots, angles, mitans etc.

I include carnots, bousse and 60 ouvrees in Caillerets.

Imo the value in Clerget is versueil > carrelle.

This system is getting a quite annoying... I was also 8 min "late" and missed out, just wanted a single bottle. Unless you monitor your email all day long and reply within seconds, the wine is gone.

I like the first served system. Less brain damage for them and presumably this helps keep pricing lower. They just through volume through the spigot.

To paraphrase Churchill, the envoyer system is the worst except for all the others. True, it relies on luck, or fast fingers, or having a job that puts you in front of a screen all day, but the alternative is to rely on favoritism? Or some complicated formula involving past purchases (how far back? gross value or number of purchases? How much research would be required simply to decide which of 25 responders gets one of the 6 bottles they have?)

They are in CA and offers are made on a CA schedule; many come long after the east coast business day is done, while I am eating dinner or busy being married. It's ok; I either respond in time or I don't. It's objective and fair.

Because it favours whales - the people who can afford to buy things they don't necessarily want in order to enable access to things that they do. It's a virus in the wine trade and has played a significant part in price inflation and locking fine wine away from drinkers. Luck of the draw is by far the fairest way, despite the significant flaws.

Michael is a whale; he might not see things as you do, Julian.

FCFS frequently shuts me out of Envoyer offers, as it does everybody who has a life. But it is fair, and it's smart for Envoyer's business.

If regular-ol'-guppies like myself were only ever afforded opportunities to buy the Direct Imports and cheap wines offered by Envoyer then I bet Envoyer would lose a significant portion of their customer base.

Are we sure that it is strictly first reply gets the wine and there is no favorable treatment of whales? I have my doubts.

I am very far from a "whale" and have never had any issues - my hit rate is about as I'd expect when taking into context the speed and reliability of email, and the quantity of other people that might be interested in what I want.
