Has anyone's bottle come in yet? It's been over a month. Wondering when they will show up.
I got a notice on 12/4 that my bottle was in here in Atlanta.

Also, TW needs a higher tier than Grand Reserve. The program has been too devalued with the ability to earn points so easily with 2-5x on some purchases. Just too many GR members at this point.
There's a point multiplier???

At certain times and/or for certain products. At one time I think you could get as many as 75 points per dollar spent on certain (terrible) wines, which puts the top tier at around $350 total.

Hi All,

I just called Total Wine and look like for this years Pappy Offer, they are reconsidering to have a raffle for it:(( Not good news. They have not made up their minds yet as last year they had a lot of mix ups with the timing, etc, it pissed off a lot of folks, so they are looking at a more "stable" method for this year. Looks like they are getting more mainstream now and we will all have to pray for the luck of the draw which I do not like.

A more rationale way to do it (although somewhat surprised they aren't guaranteeing for certain members - or I'm just not in that group). Will be interesting to see the results. Have no idea how much Pappy they have and how common Grand Reserve is. Was really the only reason I bought BDX from TW since could always get a bottle of Pappy.

Maintaining my Grand Reserve level for the annual bottle of Pappy has become pretty much the only reason I still shop at TW.

Over the years, the coupons have steadily become less valuable and my wine exploration has expanded beyond what TW has to offer.

My TW purchasing will probably be significantly reduced if I don't have access to Pappy under the new scheme.

We will see how this year goes, but with everyone able to get in on the lottery I don't see it ending well for us. I'll only be buying allocated stuff from Total wine from now on, forget about trying to make grand reserve...

There are tons of Grand Reserve members. And that is those that made it from last year and new members for this year. But, it sounds like TW is going to stratify based on THIS years spend. So if you are a Grand Reserve but have spent very little this year, it sounds like you have less of a chance to get one of the bottles vs someone that has spent lots this year.

Honestly, I have zero problem with this. Stores should reward their biggest spenders. And I’m not a big spender so I will probably be out of luck.

Sure, stores should reward their biggest customers, but a lottery ticket isn’t much of a reward. And I was only a big customer because it gave me access to Pappy/BTAC. So they lose me as a customer and the people who get the Pappy (that wouldn’t have otherwise), are they going to spend more at TW because of that? Maybe?

I’m a bit more optimistic about my chances even though my points are not very high.
I’m making a couple assumptions about the way they will do it.

1) One bottle per customer.
2) I’m assuming it’ll be done like a raffle. Those with more points have more “tickets” (opportunity to be selected). It would not be like I’m in a long line with people that have more points ahead of me. Random chance would allow for me to get picked.
3) I’m hoping the number of people with enough qualifying points at my store is not super large. It’s not i am competing for a bottle with the entire USA.

I think this is way more fair than the old system. The best thing about it is that with the old system you got one shot of picking a bottle. If you missed it there wasn’t that much time to go back and try another selection.

Way more fair? Hmm. Depends on your POV. This new system makes it easy for any GR member with even a casual interest to throw their lot in. Where as the other ststem forced a level of effort that only very interested people would commit to, weeding out the negligibly interested tourists.

You can argue that both ways, but as a motivated party this sucks.

Interesting perspective. From mine, the customer that has shelled out thousands more than me, is a better example of "motivated". I guess you could argue that that not all of them are hoping to get one of the allocated bottles, but I would bet that is a small percentage. The big spender deserves a better probability of getting a bottle than someone like me that has spent far less but has the opportunity and internet connection to snag a bottle. As much as i would like to get a bottle, I really will not lose sleep if I don't get one.

I think that is making a big assumption that they care about bourbon and spent thousands more with the intention of getting a bottle of PVW at the end. Peter V is a good example of someone that made sure he spent enough to get a chance for this, without the carrot of PVW he would have spent his money elsewhere.

I would argue that it is just as easy to assume that many of the GR members don't really care about the PVW/BT bourbons, but by making it easy for them, then might opt in whereas in previous years it was too much of a PITA.

At the end of the day it is all assumptions, but I admittedly miss the days where a motivated person could locate these bottles by being resourceful. Back in the old WA state liquor system, I built a network of connections (still have several folks from the local distributor in my contacts) and was able to identify to the hour when the shipments would hit the local liquor stores and be able to get my 1 bottle max from several of the local stores. :)

Let’s stop focusing on what’s best for the individual here, since TW isn’t in the business of caring much about your feelings. If I’m a TW beancounter, then my perspective is similar to one Nino Brown in the movie “New Jack City”:

“Money talks. Bull$hi£ runs the marathon.”

Logically, TW should care more for the customer who spends many X more than the customer who barely qualifies for GR. I qualified for GR a couple years ago when it was a $2500 annual spend figure. Someone who had spent $20K that same year should IMO have had a better chance statistically of getting an allocated item like PVW/BTAC. The reality is simple - - - it is far more difficult for TW to retain/replace a $20K customer than it is a few customers who spend bare fractions of that amount. At the end of the day, TW figures that the few folks who take their spend elsewhere is acceptable triage to ensure the bigger spending customers feel like the game is set in their favor as much as practicable.

Agreed. Objective criteria makes sense to me. I do wonder what the ratio of $20k customers is to $2.5k customers. There is a danger to place too much emphasis on the big boys. If its truly run like a raffle then the small customer will still get a chance to get rewarded for their business. I can see how customers would be irritated that they might be shutout without a chance (however slight) to take their destiny in in their own hands. Knowing that I had a better shot because I spent more would makes it more palatable to me.

the customer that has shelled out thousands more than me, is a better example of "motivated".

I think we can find agreement that as of today its all about assumptions.

Remember, they're giving "tickets" based on points, not spend. They're running a promo right now on Riedel glassware (among others) that awards 10 points per dollar spent (in addition to standard GR bonuses) - while these types of promotions may not give the low GR spending member an edge over the whales, it does provide a tool to level the playing field.

Buy a 1000 Riedels. Get points. Win Pappy lottery. Return glasses. Win
