Incoming! 2016 Schrader Offer

#1 Post by BLaird » December 5th, 2017, 9:35 am

Email just in......

We are excited to announce that the 2016 Schrader Cabernet Sauvignon release is right around the corner. An excellent vintage, 2016 marks another exceptional year with a near-perfect growing season.

Please mark your calendar — the 2016 Schrader Cabernet offer window will open on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 9AM PST.

In appreciation for your continued loyalty, we are pleased to present you a reserved offer for this release. Your exclusive offer will be available for purchase until Friday, December 22, 2017 at 5PM PST. Please note, this will be your only opportunity to purchase the 2016 Schrader Cabernet Sauvignons via our Mailing List.

Prior to this release, we encourage you to login to your account to make sure your personal information is up-to-date.

In the coming days you will receive a brochure via USPS with further information about these magnificent wines, so please watch your mailbox for more details.

As ever, we genuinely appreciate your support and look forward to sharing our very best from the 2016 vintage.
Cheers,
The Schrader A-Team

What is the "Schrader A-team" and why should I care?

#2 Post by J a y H a c k » December 5th, 2017, 12:36 pm

Just got my "Save the Date" for the next Schrader offer. In the past, these emails were always signed by Carol and Fred Schrader. Now that Constellation owns Schrader, the email is signed by "The Schrader A-Team." Not that I knew Carol and Fred Schrader, or that I object to their sale of the winery to Ultra-Mega-Super-Conglomerate Winery, but I do not want wine made by Mr. T.

I think it's time to pass and buy other stuff.
Yes, that's a DM of 1978 Mouton!

Does we think that the 2016 offering will be of lessor quality as a result of the new ownership or might this be the last great offering from Schrader before profit supersedes quality?

To buy my allocation - two six packs and three mags total - shipping and tax runs just under $600. Wow.

So amazing that there is not more buzz on this. Yep, they are now part of a 'big company', but this has always remained a 'board favorite'. And yep, prices have gone up - but that never seemed to slow folks down in the past. Just an interesting observation . . .

disagree with that, i think last year you already saw significant cracks. Posted on the board as well many disinterested parties.

With their shipping costs + tax for CA residents, you're looking at nearly $275 a bottle and they are no longer getting consistently high scores before.

As this is my daughter's birth year, so I have to purchase. I am trying to carefully pick age worthy wines to drink with her in the future. Schrader, even though they have been bought out, should hopefully maintain that pedigree for at least this vintage.

Curious on why offers are staggered on different release dates if they are guaranteed. Do others have FCFS?

Also my letter was signed by Fred and Carol. Also the wine is still being made by TRB so the only changes other than annual growing influences might be price hikes next year. This year is the same price as the last offer.

Funny but true....I actually think some of the Schraders with scores of "merely" 94-96 cannot even recoup all in cost if sold on the secondary market and so market demand must be pretty weak...at a time when allocations were rising.

I'm torn about ordering more...given how many years I've been ordering and increased allocations, I have far more Schrader than I can drink in any reasonable number of years and with secondary market pricing flatlining, it doesn't make sense any more to keep buying without some sense as to when it will be drunk.

I opened a 2010 mag on my 60th birthday in 2013. If you can't drink a magnum on a big birthday, when can you drink it. Wonder what I'll drink this March.

Opened an '06 Old Sparky magnum at dinner celebrating my son's college graduation this May. It was my wine of the year - outstanding. Buy it every year with the intention of opening of similar special occasions.

My suggestion for those on the fence: if you like the wine at the price, buy it. If you don't, then pass. The idea that anything has changed since or because of the acquisition is laughable (so far at least). It's not like we were sitting around the living room with Fred Schrader discussing the nuances of the 2016 growing season. This was never a personal, accessible, family feel winery (like MACDONALD, Lewelling or many others).

I'm buying, but it's only my 4th vintage on the list.

Still in. As long as TRB is making the wine and prices stay inline then no reason to stop buying as these wines are excellently made. I am in the option that its time to get rid of the wood cases and get the shipping costs way down.

I have opened a few. Sons wedding. Brother in law appointed provost of Ivy League School. All the family home together for a holiday with standing rib roast.

But I am on the fence this year. I have never been offered old sparky. I may give out one more shot with a wish list but if I don't get it this year I think I'll drop them.

Frankly, I don't care about how wineries allocate, but I get really pissed off when I'm the only guy opening the wine and they offer the tete de cuvee only to the flippers. Good chance I will drop Schrader and Cayuse over that issue.

I will be opening some 2001's over the holidays and expect that they will be stellar. Personally, I stopped buying after the 2009 vintage......a combination of age, price and too much wine caused me to stop purchasing most long aging California cabs, I love the wines but have enough to share with family and friends for many years to come.

Sounds like I am where Marshall was in 2009. I love the wine, but my cellar is full, the price has gone from $95 for the 2004 vintage to $225 now, and I like drinking different wines - especially new ones I learn about on this board and BerserkerFest.

Tough to say how/when the impact of the new ownership will manifest, but I think if history is any indicator, the 2016's will be the last of the Schrader as we once knew it. Just the notion that my money would be going to a global conglomerate is reason enough to stop buying.

Hillside Select...?
That is true, two of my favorite Napa cults. I was referring to Colgin, Harlan, Bryant, SE and etc.

Personally, I stopped buying after the 2009 vintage......a combination of age, price and too much wine caused me to stop purchasing most long aging California cabs, I love the wines but have enough to share with family and friends for many years to come.

While I buy almost 90% of my wine from "smaller" wineries, quality matters and this is a well made wine; it is also a crowd-pleaser when brought to an event with instant name recognition. I will buy until the price or quality make it a dumb decision.

And to be fair to Mondavi, their To Kalon (which used to just be called "Reserve") is a fabulous $100 wine.

Finally tried my first Old Sparky this past weekend. 2005 vintage and it was a great wine and held up very well next to some very good competition (07 Scarecrow, 05 HSS, 02 Bond Melbury, 13 Harbison, 12 Bevan Wildfoote, 13 Realm Tempest and a 07 Insignia). This is in a good drinking window, but still has some time left for enjoyment. Color was still dark, smooth on the palate, black fruit, very balanced.
Many in the groups wotn including mine. All bottles were empty besides the Insignia. On its own a really good wine, in this line up it was still 3/4 full.
