Ok, so I haven't posted on this in a while (I've been spending too much time singing Mike's praises on Cellar Tracker - btw having the 2014 Elysian now - EPIC!).... but now you have to go and throw out a line on some new "Empyrean" wine. I don't even know how to pronounce that! So not fair. I'm just a member of the common folk trying to figure out this whole wine world, and now you have strained my tiny little mind wondering what this animal is.... dammit.......... [head-bang.gif]

I hear Mike hooked up with a Japanese investor and is doing Junmai Ginjo Sake. Catchy name?

Empyrean is a synonym of Elysian, both are "from heaven."
Interesting though, another Beckstoffer vineyard or something altogether different.

2014 Carter OG & 2014 Myriad Elysian...It was a great weekend! Both wines have real potential… Parker needs to revisit and re-rate these. Three digit potential in a year or two no doubt. (detailed notes posted on CellarTracker).

  • 2008 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford (3/5/2017)
On the nose, sweet red fruit. Cranberry, black cherry, red jolly rancher, mocha.
On the palate, great depth, with pomegranate, black cherry, blackberry, minty herbs. Jammy fruit carries through the midpalate.
Edit: as this wine opened up even more, the jammy mid turned more blackberry liqueur, adding to the complexity as it shifted into deeper flavors. Bumped up score to 94.
    Long finish. No discernible heat.
Really well integrated at this stage, but should hold awhile. Really liked it! Thanks to Mike and Leah for sending a replacement bottle. Great customer service here! (94 pts.)

On paper, this should be overblown and just too much for my preferred style, but the focus was there, and I was still thinking about it the next day... great juice :)

We opened a 2009 Myriad 'Three Twins Vineyard' cab today to celebrate my wife's birthday, as it's one of our favorite wines. It was superb, as the previous bottles were.

I have a 2009 Myriad 'Spring Mountain' cab standing up in the cellar. Might get to that in the next few days.

I really enjoy Mike's Semillon wines, especially in the summer! ....Now I wish he would also come out with a blend of semillon and sauv blanc. (Similar to the Morlet La Proportion Doree)

Keeping the Mike Smith vibe going with another '09 cab. There's a nice streak of minerality running through this that reminds me of Mike's Pellet cabs. That would be a fun side-by-side comparison if I had more Spring Mtn cab. Unfortunately, this was my only bottle.

2013 Myriad Syrah Las Madres 100% Whole Cluster

Very pretty, perfumed aromatics, quite elegant. The tannins are a little bit astringent right now and although it unfurled with air, this could use 1-2 years.

Jake, no doubt and I just love the aromatics Mike gets from his whole cluster Syrahs, the stems really seem to add another level of complexity.

Myriad '12 Napa Valley.....

I have never been accused of not loving Mike's wines. However, this one blew me away. Best wine I have had since Andemily no. 2 in January. I have not been drinking poorly either. I don't know what it was tonight but this was a pop and pour that was spectacular. The wine is just as good on hour 3 as I finish the last glass. My wife is battling a cold, she tried it with dinner and loved it.

If you have these I really can't picture them getting much better than this.

Cheers,

Mark

Considering buying three bottles of the 2014 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III and your note makes me think I could drink it the first bottle soon, with a long enough decant.

Debating if it's worth the $350 price tag for the 3 bottles. Sounds like it is.

I know, your notes are part of what sold me on it!!! lol. I am looking forward to popping the first of these. Depending on the tannin level and structure I may go Xmas, March 2018 birthday for bottles 2 and 3... or if I can hold them, just drink one a year.

I also have an Elysian that's not quite ready so perhaps a Myriad dinner down the road.

Worth it. I know it sounds crazy, but it's a relative bargain to get an incredibly well made cab from Beckstoffer Georges III grapes at that price. The Myriad regular cab is approachable early, but I like the single vineyard cabs with age. I recently opened a 2008 Myriad Becstoffer Dr. Crane that was amazing - fresh and in a great place. If you can get your hands on an older bottle, you will get a great idea of how well these wines are aging.

Thanks Sherri. I'm bidding. Hopefully I get them.

And if I do, it'll be hard to sit on them for years as they age! Especially if the first one tastes good!

I think even the 'regular' cabs do best with at least a few years on them. I started opening the 2010s just recently.

That's the only problem with Mike's wines... They are usually really approachable and delicious young; so my impatience gets the best of me and before I know it, they're gone.

...just gotta buy more I guess!!
