Downtown D.C. reco's

I’ll be taking my 9yr old son to Wash. D.C. next week for 4 days of sightseeing and fireworks over the Washington monument. We’re staying at the Donovan House on 14th, not far from the White House. Any restaurants that we should try to hit or avoid? My son is very happy with a good burger or steak, and I’m happy if he’s happy.

tia

closer to the capitol but charlie palmer’s steak is $0 corkage for american labels.

Thanks, but I’m not going to bring any wine with me. Too much hassle.

Mark,

DC is a pretty small place (area wise) and the METRO makes it easy to get around. Near your hotel is Old Ebbitt’s Grill. Friendly service and a large menu usually means there’s something for everyone. Good burgers. Great raw bar. Been operating for over 150 years.

For the best burgers in town, try Central (11th and Pennsylvania Ave) Palena Cafe (at the Cleveland Park Metro stop on Conn. Ave)

However, DC is a madhouse the weekend of the 4th, so be prepared.

Have a look at DonRockwell.com for a lot of info on the local dining scene.

Thanks Robert, I’ll keep those in mind.

Old Ebbitt Grill is near you, and is a great place to go. Five Guys Burgers is near the Spy Museum, and has a good burger for lunch.

Pizzeria Paradisio in/near Dupont Circle would also be loved by a 9 year old.

Both Red, Hot & Blue (various locations) and Old Glory (Georgetown) offer decent BBQ.

Yanni’s up above the Zoo is a great neighborhood Greek place (I assume that it is still in business).

If you want a steak, Sam & Harry’s is my favorite place in town.

None of the museum restaurants are good, but the Air & Space Museum is likely the most edible of any of them.

Best,

Andrew

Great advice, thanks so much.

Make sure you go to Ben’s Chili Bowl — great place for a 9 year old (or President).

Try Hello Cupcake near Dupont Circle — http://www.hellocupcakeonline.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Zoo is fun and free.

Wife’s friends own this place:

Two locations.

Old Ebbitt Grill was great, we had brunch there today before flying home.

I can recommend “Thai tanic” - a great little hole in the wall Thai restaurant on 14th just north of Thomas Circle and also “Zentan” - in the Donnovan House Hotel on 14th - absolutely fantastic sushi and jerk chicken! Nice prices on wine too, had a great Mittelrhein Reisling for $6 a glass.

BLT Steak:

I’ve been to one in NYC and the chef owner knows how to prepare food and have fun.

Edit: Opps. Too late.

I saw BLT and was tempted, as I was by Charlie Palmers as I passed it on a tour bus, but it’s tough travelling with a 9yr old boy who wants fast food and then to move on to the next museum/activity.

btw - 4th of July on the Nat’l Mall = unreal!!! Best firework display I’ve seen in years, and a crazy atmosphere. We loved it. I walked more this past 4days than I have in many years and am paying a dear price in pain meds and a back that won’t bend, but it was fun.
