Mosel: places to stay

anyone got a great one? have one maybe in Trier.

I do have a great small inn/winery that also has a couple of separate guest houses. We stayed there a couple years ago and would highly recommend it. But I need to look it up at home tonight, as I can’t recall the name or specific village. Back to you soon…

Here’s a link to the place I mentioned (I hope you sprechen sie Deutsche, 'cause I don’t see an English version, though I’m sure I found one before). It’s called Alte Muhle Thomas Horeth and is in Kobern-Gondorf, about an hour NW of Trier. Don’t know if that works for where you plan to be.

We stayed in one of their separate guest cottages in a neighboring village, as the inn was full. The inn looked extremely nice, and the restaurant was very good (this despite the fact that I’m not a fan of German cuisine). The guest cottage was fully equipped, very quaint and private. Breakfast was provided every moring by one of the hotel staff who quietly snuck in downstairs and laid it out while you slept upstairs (could sound creepy but wasn’t, I promise).

Good luck with your decision.

thanks chad. Unfortunately each room only accommodates 2 (need 4). Seems to be common all over europe.

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Weinhaus Piesporter Goldtropfchen

This is at the foot of the vineyards, across the bridge from the town. Very quiet and very picturesque. The food was wonderful, they have a restaurant there, and you can buy Kurt Hain’s wines for very reasonable prices. We got several half bottles of the Beerenauslese to take away.

In Trier we stayed at the Hotel Petrisberg. This is just outside of town, up on a hill, so the balconies overlook the entire city (which is truly rather small). There are lots of religious geegaws in the rooms and hallways. We loved the view and we thought the people were charming. One of the best things was that there is a path down the hill (with lots of switchbacks) that gets you right into town, and in fact that is generally how we went to town each day, not even bothering with the car. You are quite close to some old Roman ruins there but that is true all over Trier. They serve fabulous German breakfasts at the hotel but you can’t get supper there.

In both places it helps to speak German but probably it isn’t essential.

thanks Frank. Sent a msg to the property in piesport. Had already checked out the other. Apparently we are only supposed to have 1 child. Keep running into this issue. Kids are too young to have their own room

I really like the translated description of one of the rooms

“Double room with breakfast in the new shower”

Jordan,

I would look in the town of Bernkastel or Graach, we stayed in Graach last time with 2 ppl, but I remember places in Bernkastel that could accomodate 4. Or even in Wehlen. But Bernkastel has great places to walk, is on the Mosel, it would be my pick.

recently found out that there is a festival in bernkastel that weekend. most are booked already

Jordan,

Try Weinromantikhotel Richtershof in Mulheim. http://www.weinromantikhotel.com/index1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Their gourmet restaurant was excellent and their list included some beautiful aged Auslese at very reasonable prices.

If that’s not available, I’ve had luck booking reasonable rooms at http://www.booking.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
A bit like Germany’s version of hotels.com.

thanks lori

Weinromantikhotel Richtershof is booked and they don’t do rooms for families.

I booked a hotel in Trier http://www.hotel-casa-verde.de/" onclick=“window.open(this.href);return false;. Am also considering this place http://www.weingut-loersch.de/” onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that i found through booking.de

I have a French friend who runs a small hotel in the Mosel region. Maybe he can accommodate your special room needs. Will look for the card of the place. Must be around here somewhere…will post it when I find it.

Jordan,

Ok, found it. My friend’s name is Harry de Schepper (he’s Belgian, by the way, not French - a slip of the mind there) and he owns/runs Harry’s Vinothek & Restaurant (Augusta Strasse 7 · D-56841 Traben-Trarbach · Phone 49 6541 - 8157-76 Fax · -80; E-Mail: mail@harrys-restaurant.com; Website: http://www.harrys-restaurant.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) in Traben-Trarbach, Mosel. He’s a very nice fellow and knows his wines very well.

The website doesn’t mention it outright, but he has rooms for rent and can put together accommodation/wine/dinner/wine tour packages.

Harry’s a wine journalist - we were together during the recent 2009 en primeur in Bdx - so he can arrange visits for you and make introductions.

I e-mailed him a few minutes ago regarding your needs. Hopefully he can accommodate you and your family, or, at least, refer you to an acceptable/proper establishment. Feel free to contact him directly at the e-mail address above if you so wish - just mention that you are the one I wrote him about.

Best,

Noel

Hi, Jordan.

I’ve e-mailed him again. Hope he gets it this time. If not, maybe you could try calling him?

Jordan,

Harry answered already. He, himself, has no family rooms available, but said several hotels in Traben-Trarbach do and made the following suggestions:

He said you can get the information on their local site of:

Sorry, I couldn’t be more helpful.

Best,
