NY Style Pizza Recs

#1 Post by R@y.Tupp@+sch » December 17th, 2019, 3:37 pm

For some tourist friends who are staying near 60th and 5th Ave.

They don't want to venture too far.

TIA.

They don't want to venture too far.
As a New Yorker, this means a 20 minute walk. That translates to 1 mile. There are loads of pizza places in the area. I'm sure they'll like where ever they go. If you wanted to know some pizza places on the upper westside, I can help. it's a short ride on the subway to Mama's Too pizza at 2750 Broadway between 105th and 106th street. https://mamastoo.com/

They should walk west on 60th street from 5th ave and take the Broadway local north at Columbus Circle. Get off at the 103rd street stop. After they eat, walk north along Broadway as far as 114th street. This is the Columbia/Barnard area. Classic old apartment buildings and homes + shopping. You'll see locals and college students wandering about.

In my opinion (everyone in NY has an opinion on pizza), Mama's Too isa as close to Di Fara's as you're going to get, without heading to Brooklyn. It's been my favorite place for over a year, and I have to make an effort to get there.

Rubirosa is our favorite. Quick Uber or cab ride to 235 Mulberry st. Book well in advance if possible, extremely difficult to get a reservation within a couple weeks.

Dan,

As a lifelong New Yorker, I wouldn't want to walk 20 minutes in late December.

Looking for a place within ten blocks of where they are staying.

the one at vanderbilt is no longer wood fired not sure of the other one. i generally feel their pizza is a shadow of what it once was, but the gas powered ovens just makes it very average.

Just in case any socal people are watching this thread with envy there's this place in Aliso Viejo

The best "NY style" pizza not from NY and before the NYers scream about the water is the secret to the crush, I know, but this could pass all day for a legit pie.

Apologies for the thread drift but is there any unranked, commonly agreed upon list of the top 5-10 places for legit NY style pizza in NYC??

I say "unranked" because it's pretty clear that actually ranking them will never end well.

I seem to remember something about the NY Style originating at the original Ray's (Prince St.)? I also remember first trying a slice during the 1980s at the 11th and 6th Ave version. Pretty sure that location is long defunct. High quality? Hell no. But it was a no frills slice with thin crust that you could fold and had to eat standing in a not very hygienic environment. There's a dreaded knock-off at 63rd and Lex (only 5.5 blocks from their lodging). I seriously doubt it'll be a quality product, but it'll be NY Style from "Famous Original Ray's" and eaten while standing. The O.P. didn't mention quality or fear of indigestion.

I've always made a point of getting to Motorino's when I'm in NYC. Great stuff. Heard Locali in Carroll Gardens supposed to be amazing. DiFara used to be the cult classic street pie, but last I heard it had shut down.

I am surprised Suprema is not more popular, but the lines have increased over the years. I guess it is just a solid slice joint in a gritty area of town, and not a fancy pizzeria to draw the tourist hordes. Works for me, but unfortunately am gluten free.

If so, probably just another "re-modeling". The old floors let loose change (and higher-denomination bills) disappear. A prior "re-modeling" was to accommodate foot-weary DoH inspectors, who patronized more often expected. newhere

NY Pizza Suprema is indeed very, very good.

Almost my favorite. It is my wife's favorite as she is vegan and they cater to vegans as well.

There is a Joe's on Broadway between 40th and 41st that's as good as the one in the Village. The lines are insane though. But for me, Joe's is the best slice day in and day out.

To me, Joe's (multiple locations but original is in the West Village) is the classic NY-style slice. Within the NY-style category, Bleecker St. Pizza, Prince Street Pizza and Wiliamsburg Pizza are also very good. I'm a fan of Di Fara but it's not worth the hike given the myriad great pizza places in Manhattan.

My favorite in the city of any style is Motorino. (Their meatballs are stellar, too.) Have not been to Lucali.

Been to Luzzo's 2 or 3 times and last being more than 2 years ago, mostly because of the friendly $10/$15 corkage and all the time with visiting non-winegeek relatives who insist on me treating them to some wines over NYC pizza.

Good pizza, NYC style, nothing spectacular.

I have to disagree on Angelo’s. It is NYC-style, but I find it average at best.

Sofia’s on 1st Ave, just north of 54 St, is good for the area but it’s not a sitdown place except for a few stools at the window. The Sofia’s Wine Bar on 50th west of 2nd Ave, is a casual sitdown spot with good individual pies that aren’t classic NYC-style. I don’t know the area further west to suggest closer places.

I recommended Angelo's and I agree that it's average at best.
The walking distance radius requirement by the request didn't provide truly good NYC-style pizza opportunities and so I went with something that's as close as I can get to within the NYC-style-pizza and 15-minute-walk requirements.

Glad to know of Sofia's and someday look to try it.

Do any of these places ship? We've been on a mission to find some good NY style pizza w/o the travel and Napa is lacking on choices. We like my homemade but it's not the same.
Must be the water ;)
