The best or memorable vacation spot was...

#1 Post by YLee » October 23rd, 2018, 3:33 am

For me Paris, Oslob in Philippines and Maldives.

Im not into Europe but Paris was where I proposed and Maldive is just simply a beautiful tranquil place. Oslob was where I fulfilled one of my bucket list by diving with Whale Sharks.

For breathtaking beauty:
Canadian Rockies
Oregon coast
Kalalau trail Kauai

Had a totally unexpected encounter with a whale shark while heading back from a dive in Hawaii. Captain stopped the boat and everyone grabbed their masks and fins and jumped in. It hung around with us about 5 minutes before moving on. That was memorable but not a reliably repeatable experience.

My most memorable vacation spot Barcelona in 1977 during the first presidential election after the death of Franco and hearing gunshots and explosions as we walked down the street. It was a (very) short but memorable visit

Impossible question, but the first thing that comes to mind is Kyoto.

More recently, the Norwegian fjords last summer were life-affirming beyond all (high) expectations.

Paris and Tokyo are the places I'd most like to revisit annually.

Kyoto in the fall with the leaves in full color very nearly made my top 3.

Keep hearing about the Norwegian fjords. Needs to go on our list.

My most memorable was a stay in Roses, Spain about 10 years ago, where we had the penthouse suite at a beach-front hotel. That night was the Festival of San Joan (summer solstice), and they had a massive fireworks display right in front of our hotel. Really cool.

Kala Patthar at approximately 18,200 ft, a peak adjacent to Everest with the best views.
I've been to more memorable places, but not on vacation.

I posted this in one of the Spanish threads. My favorite trip we took was Granada -> Toledo -> Madrid -> El Escorial -> Segovia -> Avila -> Zamora -> Santiago de Compostela -> Salamanca-> Cáceres -> Mérida -> Trujillo -> Sevilla -> Granada. The parador in Santiago is adjacent to the cathedral and is breathtaking. We had a beautiful suite that over looked the plaza in from of the cathedral.

A few come to mind:

- a small village in Cambodia (can’t remember the name) but the poorest of poor living conditions, with kids laughing and kicking a shoe as a soccer ball. Happiness found anywhere. It was deeply impactful and memorable.

- bora bora, honeymoon.

- trekking gorillas in Uganda. Just how similar to humans these amazing animals are. Wow

- cruising in the Galapagos and watching sunset. The island tours were nice, animals sure. But man those sunsets were as beautiful and as peaceful moments as I can remember.

Pebble Beach, with 3 days of golf and a group of 24 that cost more than Myrtle Beach

I lived in Japan for 3 years and it was so memorable, I'd love to vacation there.

Probably where I went with my family on holiday every year as a kid. Nothing beats spending the summer at the beach with a huge group of friends you’ve known almost your whole life. Mass games of cricket and touch rugby on the beach, waterskiing every morning and evening when the sea was flat calm and sailing or swiming the rest of the time. Abersoch, north wales.

These are three gems for those who appreciate the outdoors!!! I like your phrase "reliably repeatable experience", since many of our own most memorable vacations have a bit of serendipity in them. We may have set the stage, but the special experiences "just happened". These three destinations are pretty sure to please.

I love St. John, USVI. Easy to get to from the eastern US. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Sleepy enough to feel you are truly away from it all. Easy access to the BVIs for day tripping. And enough watering holes to remain very happy during your stay. The recovery from Irma is still on-going but thinking of going for a quick trip in early 2019.

Most memorable vacation day was spent in Montalcino during the 2002 World Cup. The town was empty and there was big game being played on TV. After lunch I headed to an Enoteca / wine shop to taste some of the local product while my wife explored the village. The proprietor seemed a bit annoyed that I was there. He gave me a glass and slid three open bottles of Brunello my way. And then turned back to his small TV. I asked about a specific wine which increased his annoyance with me, but he responded in the perfect way. He quickly opened two more bottles and placed them in from of me with the understanding that I would taste quietly, and he would watch his game. What’s a guy to do? Bar to myself, 5 open bottles of Brunello (1997 vintage with a fantastic 1995 Riserva) and filling my own glass. Pure bliss. One of the best tastings I have been to!

Too many great ones. Here are my top 3:

1. We chartered a 27' boat with another couple who sail, from the Moorings in Tortola and toured the British Virgin Islands for a week in May in the late 1980s. On Jost Van Dyke we discovered the Soggy Dollar Bar where we were the only ones there on a picnic bench at sunset drinking while looking out at the water while big loudspeakers hanging down on each side played some blues. A somewhat peak experience in our frames of mind. Twenty years later, some acquaintances bought the place upgraded it.

Image

2. We visited my wife's brother who lived in St. Jean Cap Ferrat in the south of France right on the Mediterrnean in September, 1992. We rented a car and drove to Florence. On the way through Tuscany we passed a sign for a Chianti release fair in a small town and stopped to taste. We were the only Americans. Then on to Florence, Sienna and San Gimignano and back with our case of wine. We had planned to take some of the wine home but when we were ready to leave there was only one bottle left.

3. For our 30th anniversary we booked a 10 day cruise on Oceana (Venice to Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Corfu, Santorini, Kusadasi and Ephesus, and finally Athens.) What a great experience - like cruising in a 5 star hotel. About 1000 guests with 1.2 service people per guest. No kids- all adults. Four different high end restaurants on board (Italian, French, Asian, Steak House) or the main dining room or a buffet (with steak and lobster). We met some amazing people on board.

At the time, memorable but not the most memorable. Now, after it's recent history, it might have gone ahead. Palmyra in the 1990's.

. . .
Brought back memories. We visited JVD in the late 90's taking the ferry over from St Johns where we did glorified camping at Maho Bay (my wife still remembers how many steps up to the bathroom). We walked to the Soggy Dollar from the "port" up and over a hill. Had some drinks, chilled, and played hook and ring for a while. Watched people wading ashore from boats like yours and "soggying" their dollars. Had a homemade dinner at a house near the port. We selected the fish for the meal and were told to come back in a couple of hours. Grouper - one of the most delicious fish dishes that we ever had. Thanks for reminding me of this!

Not the most fun, nor the most exotic, but as a lifelong soul-filling whole body experienced memory, the 1st time I went to Banff in the winter to ski with my father. The solitude & magic at the top of a mountain while surrounded by other peaks.
Gives me goosebumps just being reminded about it. Mountains have always done that for me since then.

Like all of you I just couldn't narrow this down to one spot. The ones that come to mind when I think back:

Fly-fishing trip to Argentina, based out of central Patagonia about 3 hours south of a town call Esquel. Very remote, and as it was early Summer when we were there I saw more trout that people over the course of a week. Remember wading in a deserted stream, chest high, and catching a 20 inch rainbow that almost stole the rod out my hands.

St. Barts - Only been once but every year I think of going back. Great food, awesome beaches. The flight in on a 20 seater from St. Marten is an adventure in and of itself; one of the smallest runways in the Caribbean with the ocean at one end so you need to get the plane down and stop it fast! Come it at like a 45 degree angle.

Africa - First time we went on safari in South Africa, on our first game drive, our guide drives the Land Rover to some commotion in the distance, and a herd of buffalo are running for their lives. We can't figure out from what; he guns the land rover and we're neck and neck with the buffalo who are running away, for a couple minutes. We circle back to where we started and find a pride of lion devouring a buffalo that didn't make it. On another trip to Tanzania, we were parked in an open savannah area, at sunset, watching the sky turn orange, as three lionesses slowly sauntered past our vehicle about 5 feet away from where I was sitting at the edge of the seat. Nothing between me and them - looked one in the eyes as it passed within a distance close enough for me to touch it and a shiver ran down my spine.

First trip to South America we stayed in the old walled colonial city in Cartagena. Very touristy to be sure, but really could feel this great energy there, really pretty with colorful flowers hanging out of open windows above century old doors.

Staying on Lanai a few years back and playing 54 holes of golf in one day on a fantastic and deserted Jack Nicklaus course. Golfing nirvana.

Most memorable was on my honeymoon in 1975. First time in Europe on a 2 week package on TWA. First week was to be beach area in Malaga. Neither my wife nor I are beach people so we wanted to take some side trips that were promised, but there were none available on our group package. So what was memorable, we rented a car and drove to Seville, stayed overnight at the Alfonso XIII, saw the sights, took a carriage ride at night and used my high school Spanish to converse with the driver, drove back the next day to Malaga through the mountains stopping in Ronda for lunch and visiting Zahare and Marbella. Wife and I have been back to Europe at least 1 or 2 times a year since taking only self drive trips. Many better trips, but none more memorable than the adventure of our first time on the road on our own. First week spent in first of probably 20 visits to Paris comes close

Safari in Tanzania with my then teen age kids and my dad. Beautiful and amazing. All those fantasies I had as a kid watching Mutual Of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom became an even better reality

South Africa for me, Cape Town and safari. Its amazing how many great sights/experiences there are on the western cape (Table Mountain, Cape of Good Hope, Kirstenbosch botanical garden, wine country), and then seeing the animals while on safari is just the coolest. I look forward to doing some of the safari/nature-related trips that others have mentioned here.
