Oahu, Kahala Resort

any good wine stores, restaurants, anything interesting? Will be there for a few days this month.

Doris Dukes Shangria La

Senia and The Pig and the Lady, both in Chinatown. The former is upscale foodie in a casual setting, mainly small plates. The latter, right next door, is a casual Vietnamese influenced pan-Asian place. Both very good food.

We’re going next month. Fresh fish and mai tai…

you realize it’s not in France?

Tamura’s is a decent wine shop. I usually pick up Ridge there. We fly a case of wine in our Wine Check into Kailua, Oahu each trip because I haven’t found much good wine in the area.

If you are heading to the North Shore I would suggest stopping off at Romy’s for fresh shrimp and prawns. Great lunch stop for roadside dining and for my taste way better than Giovanni’s. If possible call your order in ahead of time.

Fujioka’s wine store is also in Kaimuki.

Went to Senia 2 weeks ago. Corkage was $40 if I recall correctly. Wine list was really overpriced.

Suggest that you call around to see if the restaurant allows corkage.

Thanks to all! Aloha.

How did you choose that one Alan? I always go to the other islands for fun.

friends picked. Been to Maui and a few others so we’re just rolling w this pick.

We stayed at the Kahala for four nights. The hotel has kept its quiet local charm but with updates. The staff was friendly and well trained and the restaurants were very good. Waikiki on the other hand was Las Vegas in the Pacific - all glitz and glamour and I didn’t recognize a thing. I won’t be going back to Waikiki but driving around Oahu, I was still awestruck at the beauty of the rest of the island - North shore, Lanikai, Sandy Beach and all our old haunts. Plus a great dinner at Alan Wong’s - get the ahi spring roll. Or maybe two.

I stayed at the Kahala last year and second Jerry’s comments on Waikiki. You’ll go back to Kahala with a newfound appreciation for it after seeing the touristy, crowded mess in Waikiki. I was there for a wedding so didn’t get to eat out much unfortunately. I’d just plan for the fact that Kahala isn’t near anything so a rental car would be a good idea.

Ditto for Fujioka. Excellent selection for the south pacific. I spent time in Rarotonga and wow that was a challenge lol.
