Halcon BD12 Offer - open thru Feb 5th

Our tenth Berserkers Day offering and this year we have samplers of our 2019 estate Rhones plus a vertical of Oppenlander Pinot Noir. 2019 was a very special vintage at Halcon vineyard. The weather pattern was very similar to the year before, with high temperatures very close to averages throughout the year but a persistent, deep summer marine layer gave us very cool nighttime temperatures. This weather pattern, just like 2018, led to a very long hang-time, strong acids and very mature tannin. What changed in 2019 was the crop level, just 60% of the 2018 crop, giving an intensity, depth and openness to the wine.

  1. Oppenlander PN Vertical - two bottles each of 2017, 2018 and 2019. $162 + shipping (see costs below, delivery free in the Bay Area) + sales tax where applicable.
2017: “It delivers a fine, black fruity nose of black cherries, dark berries, a hint of beetroot, bonfire, espresso, a fine base of soil, a touch of fresh thyme and a deft framing of cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and soil-driven, with an excellent core of fruit, good soil signature and a long, fine-grained, tangy and nascently complex finish.” 93 John Gilman
2018: “Gracious and nicely lifted. Lavender, spice, dark blue/purplish fruit and mint are all nicely lifted in a mid-weight Pinot that offers an intriguing mix of forward fruit and Mendocino energy. Medium in body, with lovely energy, the 2018 Pinot is a winner.” 92 Antonio Galloni
2019: No scored reviews as yet but William Kelley wrote on Cellartracker “A touch richer and riper than its cool 2018 counterpart, the 2019 Pinot Noir Oppenlander Vineyard unwinds with scents of plums, sweet berry fruit, bergamot and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, it’s ample and succulent, with powdery tannins and an enveloping core of fruit.”

  2. All-Estate Rhone six-pack - two 2019 Alturas Syrah, two 2019 Esquisto Grenache blend, one 2019 Mourvedre and one 2019 Elevacion Syrah.
Elevacion is again a cuvee of 100% Chave clone Syrah, fermented with 100% whole-cluster and aged in neutral French oak puncheons. This vintage is 13.4%. The usual savory character but a little more upfront fruit.
The Mourvedre was fermented with the same 50% whole-cluster, aged in neutral oak and just 90 cases bottled. The fruit was picked October 26. with the low crop giving us a concentrated but still very balanced, fresh wine. Lots of peppery, floral aromatics so typical of the HalcĂłn terroir. 13.7% alc.
Esquisto has a slightly different blend this vintage: 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. The lack of Mourvedre gives a more approachable wine. William Kelley described it on Cellartracker as “showing beautifully, bursting from the glass with aromas of pomelo, blood orange, black cherries, lavender, tapenade and subtle spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and velvety, it’s fleshy and enveloping, built around powdery tannins and lively acids.”
The low crop level led to a concentrated but still superbly balanced 2019 Alturas. It is a more open, more intense version of the 2016 vintage and likely the best Alturas to date. William Kelley “can’t believe it’s not Gonon …bravo”. We bottled just 190 cases compared to 330 cases the year before. 13.7%
The all-Estate Rhone six-pack is $172 + shipping (see costs below, delivery free in the Bay Area) + sales tax where applicable.
