Leo's Blind Tasting Club - Summary Schedule

#1 Post by Gil Bauer » July 30th, 2010, 12:24 pm

At the July installment of “Leo’s Blind Dinners,” I volunteered to set up and manage a master list of the upcoming dinners and the person hosting. Each host is responsible for managing the time, place, and guest list of his/her dinner in a separate thread. I am merely tracking, across “both” boards, who is hosting a given month, and which months are open. Many of the people who hosted last year have said they would like to host a second time – but we are trying to give everyone a first chance before we start on round two. If you have been involved in these, but have not yet hosted, please pick an open month and sign up by posting in this thread.

Sorry I missed the July dinner. At the dinner at Ben Goldberg's, I had requested to host in October, but I don't think anyone has been keeping track of this. I would like to host a dinner (and should, given my prior attendance at the dinners). I guess I don't mind waiting until a another month is available, but I don't want December. December is too difficult to get a good reservation and people available to attend.

Do others agree that we should skip December (as we are skipping August)? Or, put differently, does anyone want December? I didn't realize that these didn't start until January of this year (I missed the first one). Josh, do you want October? (I could give it up, but I can't do December either).

Please chime in.

Gil,

I'm ok either way about October. If you want October, that's fine. But I do want to make sure I have the chance to host, both because I would like to and because I want to make sure to return the generosity of all who have hosted so far.

Josh - so pick January or February (or, if that is too far out for you to schedule, take October and I will take January or February). I think once we get all the "first round people" (like you and me) on the calendar, some people will start to sign up for a second round...

I know Salil was in Singapore last week and was going to be in that general neighborhood for at least several weeks so you might not hear back for a while.

Thanks for the update, Jay. As you probably saw, I added Salil because of Leo's comments upthread. I wanted to hear from him before counting the date "confirmed," but I guess there is no rush.

Salil sent me an email asking me for a slot and I told him december was free. Considering december is hard to get reservation maybe we can do his hosting at my place and me and Salil do the cooking.

What's the format or theme of these tastings? I have seen mention of them, but do not know what goes on. I'm in NYC usually twice a year and am curious about these.

Merrill,
The host/hostess pick venue and supplies all of the wine for the evening. The participants treat the host to dinner. We try to keep it to 10-12 people.
We try to guess. Region, varietal and producer. Fun tastings all wines served blind.

Fair point, although Jay and I have attended more often than Caroline and Rebecca. I suggest we host at the end of "Round 1", before anyone hosts for the second time.

Just to amplify a little - we rotate hosting with each person taking a month. It's usually at a restaurant but one person hosted at his home. It's loads of fun, even when a wine is not something I'd normally drink. And despite the fact that I'm terrible at identifying wines blind (I guessed 1997 Beaujolais for a 1997 Haut Brion at the last tasting [oops.gif] at least I got the vintage ) guessing is also a blast.

Those of us who went early are anxiously awaiting the opportunity to host again. I've been through about a dozen permutations of my next wine list already.

Robert - are you asking about a waiting list to host or attend?

If attend, then that is handled separately by each host for each event (see Suzanne's September thread).

If host, then you can pick a month marked "open" in the first post of this thread (which I have been updating). Have you attended any of these? (and thus owe/want to host) I have been to about half of them and don't remember seeing you, but maybe you went to the ones I missed?

Rebecca and I will take March 2011. Perfect weather for my kind of wine - big bold stuff with real flavor on a cold day.

So, does the fact that April and May 2011 have stayed open for over a month mean that we can start recycling the people who have already hosted one? Though I see Robert has expressed interest but not yet claimed a month.

Question for Leo, or anybody else who wants to chime in:

I had great fun at the June tasting (hosted by Jay H), and would like to come to more. However I have basically ZERO in my cellar -- I've only started getting "serious" about wine very recently. If I just keep coming and never host, I'll feel like a moocher (and be one too, I guess!). To host a tasting I'd have to source the wine, which would get kind of expensive. Maybe a friend would help out, but I don't think it would be possible to match the wines that Jay brought in June, for ex. (a fair amount of old Bdx).

Any ideas?

On the other hand if you need somebody at the last minute, I'm very likely available [wink.gif] !

Some thoughts on questions and comments upthread:

- I volunteered to "administer" the summary schedule, not to "run" anything, so my comments are merely my point of view awaiting consensus or debate from the group.

- re Jay Miller's questions of "round two" -- I think that, technically, Caroline and David Lazer "owe" a second tasting due to their "double" attendance (as Jay H. has signed up for March for his "double" attendance with Rebecca). That being said, I think the reason this whole thing has worked so far, is that we have not counted every nickel and dime or required things to be equal. You attend some, you miss some. You host with the wines that make sense for you. So, I have no real issue either way on this. Ben Aneff has also not hosted, but I don't know how many he attended or whether he will be attending in the future. Anyone else "missing"? Other thoughts on this?

- re Robert D's request to host. I have no problem with Robert picking a month and hosting. Should we try to have him attend first? How big should the group be? If Jay M. and I had been available for the September dinner, we would have been oversubscribed. That being said, we may still have cancellations and need "wait list" attendees after all. Not really sure how to manage this. Should people attend at least once before hosting? Is there an optimal size for the group? I don't think bigger is consistently better for this.

- any thoughts on Peter K's question? I think in order to host you need to put forth any interesting and quality lineup. Many hosts, even with decent cellars, have sourced at least a couple of key bottles for their tastings. I don't see how it would be inexpensive for anyone to host. After all, we have each benefited as the guest of several other hosts. But I don't think we will have first growth Bordeaux or "high profile" wines at every tasting.

Again, I am not trying to make any decisions here -- just stimulate the group discussion and add my point of view where I have one. Other thoughts?

Just IMO - I think so long as we allow the host to set their preferred maximum number of attendees and have them give preference to people who have hosted before or intend to host (for example I intend to clear the date of my next dinner with Leo before setting it) then if there are open spaces and the host would like to fill them I don't really care if that spot is filled by someone who hasn't hosted. The wine would just be going to waste in that event.

However people who have hosted (and to only a slightly lesser extent have the intention to host) should, as a general rule, have precedence.

And Peter - there is no obligation for a host's wines to be expensive. One of the things I like about this format is that it allows people to open whatever they feel comfortable with (with the assumption that they will try to make it interesting). I've enjoyed every dinner I've attended even when I wasn't enjoying a particular wine. Of course I wish people wouldn't keep scheduling these dinners for when I'm either away on vacation or on-call but even that gives me the pleasure of tweaking them about it ;).

My original thought was that Rebecca and I combined would host twice for every ten times that we attend in the aggregate, either individually or jointly. Since there is a lot of flux in group membership, I do not know whether 10 is the right number, perhaps it should be closer to 14. The only reason I selected March as the next time we would do it was because it was the first month I could grab. I really should have been January or February, but you guys stole all the good winter months.

No problem eliminating the other board. "Traffic" there is virtually non-existent.

I think Jay H's analysis for the couples makes sense; host twice for every 10 dinners attended. So far we've hosted one, and counting Suzanne's upcoming event I've attended 5 others and Caroline 3 others. We will take June 2011, but will consider swapping to July.

There's a thread about this on wldg? I hadn't noticed.

Curious, how many wines are typically served at these dinners?

-(B+) Enjoyable. Balanced and complete.
-(A-) Very enjoyable. Compelling and full of character.
-(A) I love it. Excellent.
-(A+) Extraordinary to me. Emotional. Defies the laws of physics.

Hello,

First post on berserker. I did send an e-mail to Gil. I would be glad to host the September tasting or if there is a cancellation, any of the Jan - June tastings.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Just a preliminary note on March 2011. We are having a lot of trouble coming up with a line up because every time Rebecca and I discuss it, we come up with a different flight of three wines we want to have. So far, I think we have about 10 flights, which obviously will not work. I'm going to go to work finding a restaurant (I'm trying to avoid the usual suspects) amd then I'll post a thread.

I'd love to get on the invite list if there is room for any of the dinners, especially in Westchester.

Ross: The next one is in Westchester but to sign up you need to go on the thread for that particular month. There should be one now for "Leo's Blind Tasting Club-December" and future ones will be put out by the host/hostess for the upcoming months.

Salil -

Is there a reason you offered to sign up for next September two posts after Jeremy made the same request? (other than, potentially, not reading the other posts in the thread)?

I am inclined to give him "first dibs" since that will be the first time he hosts.

Scrolled too quickly. blush But if that's taken, put me down for October. I'll most likely be travelling for research during June/July/August, so can't take anything in the summer.
