Bring a special bottle: Peking Duckhouse Mid NYC:: Oct 21st All Full !!

#1 Post by Jonathan Sirot » September 16th, 2019, 3:51 pm

As many of you are aware I arrange offlines with my regular group, every 2nd month in Ct. I also certainly travel for wine dinners and have done the jaunt into the city on the train many times over the years. I know that many past events have been held at Peking Duck House, I have never dined there, but always wanted to.

As I can walk there from Grand Central easily I would like to arrange a dinner at Peking Duck House midtown location on 53rd St. They no longer have free corkage there. It is $15 per bottle which is very reasonable by NYC standards. If anyone attending can do better great. I would ideally like to hold this on a Mon night or a Weds night in mid October.to mid Nov.

I propose a theme of Grand Cru Burgs and Champagnes. If others like the theme great. If not am totally open to suggestions, or ok with a free for all.

In a recent thread a well known board member stated that high end wine offline dinners in the city were few and far between. I don't even live in town but happy to step up and try to make it happen ! Anyone interested ??

Attending so far
1. Jonathan- 2008 Dom Perignon & 2004 Shafer Hillside Select
2. Dinesh-2004 Gaja Sperss
3. Tony-1997 Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui
4. Tom- 1982 Diamond Creek Red Rock Terrace
5. Chris-2012 Faileley Corton Charlemagne + 2012 Rion Clos Vougeot
6. Julie- Selosse Substance Blanc de Blancs
7. Mike- 2003 Beaucastel Homage a Jacques Perin
8. Could be you !

Room for a few more, if anyone else is interested.

I always require at least one Champagne to start any offline I plan, so I will gladly bring one in addition to my other bottle..

As some folks have asked if they can bring bottles other than Burgundy, I have changed the them to "Bring a special bottle", so please bring something that you think will impress the group. I would appreciate if folks post the wine before the event if possible,

I will bring a 2008 Dom to start with as well as an 04 Shafer Hillside Select

I would, but I am going to have to play it by ear for any more October events.

Jonathan, thanks for taking the lead. We need more of these.

I am likely to be away for a week around end Oct. so if it doesn’t conflict with their dates, will def make it.

Maybe good to throw out a date that works for 2-3 people and let others decide if it works for them. If later on there is a consensus to change it, you can do that.

First half of Oct or after November 5th is safe for me right now.

Dinesh, when you refer to first half of October, is Wednesday October 16th a date that works for you ?

Tony, does that date work for you also ? Works fine for me, and I think if we have three of us pretty solid will run with that date and am sure a few others will jump in. If not no worries, we simply get bigger pours !

Considering I had been supposed to attend a Grand Cru in the city that got postponed, and Tony is also in favor of the idea, will officially declare Grand Cru Burgs as the theme.

16th would work.

Also do you have some thoughts on the theme (plots/ producers/ years/ budget etc)

A few ideas I would throw out there
1. Latriciers / Chapelle/ Charmes Chambertin
2. Clos Vougeot
3. Clos Saint Denis

I am happy to sign up for Bonnes Mares/ Cdlr/ CdB but would probably get expensive :)

I would love to join you. It's been awhile but I had a contact at PDH for free corkage. Once we solidify this a bit I could call.

I will come. You have GC Burgs?!?!?! Yes, How about if I bring a 2006 Hospices de Beaune Corton-Cuvée Docteur Peste Faiveley? I opened one in March 2025 and it was still a baby. Time to check in again.

Great. glad you can join. That's funny that you're amazed I have GC Burgs, coming from someone notorious for his Saxum rocket fuel love ! I only have 5 bottles of Saxum in my 2000 btl collection, so I have room for a few dozen GC red burgs and plenty of white burgundy which I drink a lot of.

1. "You have GC Burgs?" was meant to be an accusation of me by others. not me of you. Most people don't believe I have GC Burgs, but CT says I have 22 bottles of reds. Actually, one is really Rebecca's - she bought it at a charity auction.

2. 2025 should have been 2015. 9 years out.

Good question Len, since at least half of our crowd is Jewish. I usually start events at 6:30 which looks like it works, as Sundown is 6:25 in NY that evening.

Oops. I have to guard the door the night before and throw myself in front of ISIS members with machine guns, so maybe I can't make it. Sundown is 6:25, which means you can eat after 7:25, but since I am a devout Jewish Atheist, who's going to know. I would prefer a different date because my office is closed and it allows me NOT to take the train to NYC for a day.

Great !! After we have a date that actually seemed to work for everyone a monkey wrench is thrown in. It does look like there will be some sort of playoff game on the 9th according the schedule I just looked at. That might cause one or two folks to drop out if indeed it is true.

If we have any very observant folks technically I understand you are supposed to fast 25 hours. To me 24 is close enough but would like to hear from others. If this is an issue for some we can run with a new date, OR if we have a greater response for the original date, we will stay with it.

SO... to make a long story short, how about we try to go with Mon Oct 21st. It is right before the world series and I think there is no game scheduled, nor is it a jewish holiday. If this works for everyone please let me know as I don't want to spend much more effort to nail down a date.

Sorry Jay if you don't wish to take the train in on your day off, I am taking a 5 hour round trip train ride myself so not much sympathy here, unfortunately the other date is patriots playing the jets at home. If either date is no good, sorry. Wish I could accommodate everyone's schedule but that is impossible.

One slight correction, Jonathan: it actually *is* a Jewish holiday that day (Simhat Torah) but I imagine Jay's office will be open

I hope that we can work this out because we are five including Jay. Or maybe Chris depending on the date. I believe these things need a minimum of six. Either date works for me as long as the Yankees aren't playing.

I can agree that 6 is an ideal number, but will have to respectfully disagree that we need to have that number. I have done offlines with as few as 3 people and had a blast. I plan to hold this event as long as there are 3 or more folks. If you decide to pass because it is too small, I would hope you will join regardless of size of group. I will guarantee regardless of size that there will be at least 6 different wines to sample, including a great Champagne. I am already planning on bringing 2 bottles and will bring a 3rd if necessary to ensure it. No worries, I have a lot of wine in my cellar and it was made to share.

It looks like either date is not good for Jay and the original date IS a playoff game. This date has no baseball game and we have 5 solid folks now, so we will go with Oct 21st

We do have up to 3 more spots open. Anyone else interested ?

Would like to start at 6:30 if that works for everyone. GC white burgs are fine too, or a 2nd Champagne never hurts. I will sacrifice one of my bottles of 08 Dom for the dinner as well as another bottle tbd.

Please note that as some folks requested to bring bottles other than Burgs I have changed them to "Bring a special bottle", so please bring a bottle that you think will impress.

I am offering up an 08 Dom for starters as well as an 04 Shafer Hillside Select as a 2nd bottle. Please post wine you will bring if possible before the event.

We currently have 6 people signed up, which is great, but would be happy with up to 4 more folks for a maximum of 10.

Hello, I’d be in for Mon, Oct 21st if there is space. Thinking of bringing a 2016 Perrot-Minot Vosne-Romanee Les-Beaux-Monts if that works. I have been wanting to try it. (The GC’s that I have are pretty young) Option 2, I could bring a 2014 or 2015 Hillside Select if you want to do a vertical tasting. I do have a Gevrey Chambertin, but its a 1er cru. Option 3: I can get a Jacques Selosse champagne.

Yes I did change the theme sorry, I had requests from several folks to bring wines other than Burgs so I changed theme. Had tried to PM everyone but accidently forgot to send you a note. Hope the change is ok with you.

Yes Julie, there is room. All of your picks sound good but one stands out to me. I am a huge Champagne fan, and have tried most of the usual suspects, but have never tried a Selosse and it is on my bucket list. Most generous of you to offer. champagne.gif

Monday 10/21 is Patriots at Jets, I'm surprised Jay hadn't mentioned this already.

Brent.
I know it's a long thread, but I covered the topic of the Jets Pats home game, back on post 25 of the thread, and discussed how we were changing to this date because Oct 9th the original date was both a jewish holiday AND a baseball playoff game, therefore causing a conflict with almost everyone attending. If Jay prefers to attend the dinner instead of watching the Jets lose to the mighty Pats he is welcome. Sadly can't please everyone, but I try my best. Why don't you join the dinner ? We have some amazing wines on deck !

I was going to show up but now I am tentative. Dropped weights from 6 feet high on to my foot and cracked it.

Very sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you heal.fairly soon. As for the dinner you can decide at the last minute whether you are able to join.

Sure, I’m bringing the Substance Blanc de Blancs. There are others of Selosse that are more approachable and may match the food better. Since not everyone may have tried Selosse, thought it may be more interesting to bring the bottle that is the recognizable and collectible of his for tasting. Selosse champagne is a newer (not so new anymore) solera, oxidative style where he is trying to give a sense of place to the champagne similar to Pinot and Chardonnay’s in burgundy across vintages. It will be fun to taste.

Let me know if you want me to post more about the specific disgorgement, dosage etc.

Bump.
. We have 8 folks attending with room for 2 more and a superb selection of wines. I have updated first post with the line up. Anyone who has not declared yet, would appreciate if you could do so in the next few days.

IMPORTANT: Especially as we are drinking some top caliber wines it is important to note that PDH does not have great stemware so please bring your own See you all soon !

Wish I could attend this but Mondays are tough for me, so I have been lurking.

Jonathan, I recently had the 04 Hillside, I think it still needs time. Just my 2 cents.
