Boston in June: 2004, 2005, & 2007-2017 Patricia Green Pinot Noir Estate Etzel Block Vertical & blind gathering

#1 Post by Kirk.Grant » January 3rd, 2019, 1:34 pm

I've been a fan of the Patricia Green Cellars Pinot Noir Estate Etzel Block bottling for a long, long time. I've got a vertical of the wine with the following vintages (2004, 2005 & 2007-2017). I've found one of the greatest ways to understand a wine is to tase a Vertical. So, I'd like to hold an offline to get together with people that have an interest in joining me. I'd like this to be as many people as possible Hence the Boston/Portland/Bangor posting. I'll host it wherever I can get the most people to attend. I also want there to be enough to taste...so my maximum number of people I want is ten(10) not counting myself and Jim Anderson. Jim has expressed a willingness/interest in possibly joining this gathering. If so, I'd like to make sure we roll out the red carpet with some fun and interesting blind wines. Anyone that attends please bring a wine that you are excited about and want to serve blind to share with the group. Dinner as planned at 5pm.

Venues

Boston - I'm open to going anywhere that will have/host us. If you're from Boston and have a recommendation please include this in your post.

Kirk, My wife Jacqueline and I would love to participate at almost whatever the venue/locale you come up with. Only one big IF for us is that it would work only if scheduled for May or later. Either way, great idea. Best, -Jim

Kirk - I would be interested and have a venue in Boston that can work. Could also do Portland, Bangor is a bit too far. Would happily bring something interesting to share. Obviously very date dependent. Would be great to catch up with you (and Doug?) again.

I might be interested if it's here in Boston (or if it's on a weekend, I could up come to Portland). Sadly, don't know of any good venue suggestions :(

Jud,

Awesome!! It'll be great to catch up with you and yes...I'm certain Doug will join us. The only reason there is no date yet is because I wanted to check in with Jim to see if he could join us if there is a time that would be best. I'll second this that May/June would be a good time for me. If we can do it in Boston, I think that would be best. There is sediment in these wines and if at all possible it would be great if the location would allow for the storage (and not moving them) for a few months before. However, if that's not possible, I'll probably just store them at Doug's house and then open them before we drive to decant for sediment and then return them to the bottle.

I'm going to tag this thread for myself on the very outside chance that I could coordinate a visit to Boston sometime in that time period. If I can, I would love to join!

I'd be interested in joining as well and would get on the waiting list. I don't have any PG in the cellar but I've enjoyed the wines before. I could bring something else interesting to drink.

Done...and it seems that June is most likely the best for Jim. As his dates get more firm, I'll update this and we'll try to secure a day & time.

Greg,

Glad to add you to the group. There are a few people who may not be able to make it that are trying to iron out their schedules. So I'd say it's likely that some on the waiting list may get to join us. Welcome to Boston...

Hopefully soon, I'll reach out to Jim again to see if he has secured his travel dates yet. If there's no answer I'm inclined to lean towards June 22 or June 23. How far in advance do you think your venue will need to secure a date?

If we needed to set a date would Sunday 23 June work??

I haven’t heard back from Jim, my guess is he’s busy with a lot of changes at the winery. So maybe we just set the date and hope he can join us.

I just want to thank everyone that was a part of this. The generosity of everyone that was there with us was humbling. While the wines were fun and exciting making new friends and sharing this hobby really was the best part of it all. I think what stands out the most to me about the whole experience was how in the entire vertical there wasn't one wine that wasn't special and all of them still seemed to have life left in them. The 2004 was a favorite of mine and tasting everything side by side helps me realize I'm really enjoying the Etzel Block most in the 12-15 year range (or possibly longer...time will tell).

Agreed. Thanks for putting this together, Kirk and thanks also to Jim Anderson. That vertical was impressive, especially for the diversity from year to year depending on so many variables as Jim described. I liked Jim's grouping of the wines into "themes", which provided a way of organizing my tasting impressions. I enjoyed probably all these wines but there were some that stood out to me also: 2004 among the "oddballs", 2015 among the "warm weather" grouping, and 2016 among the last grouping of "ideal conditions" wines. These three wines have very different qualities that appealed to me but all three were very appealing (my glasses of these three were emptied!). The blind tasting was interesting for me to sit back and listen to those with more experienced palates narrow the possibilities in an unpretentious yet obviously knowledgeable way. My wildly off-based conjectures were kindly tolerated. It was a good group to taste with and spend the evening. The five hours just flew by for us. Jacqueline and I enjoyed it tremendously. Thanks to all who shared the evening with us.

Thank you, Kirk for putting this together and sharing your wines! It was an honor to taste alongside Jim Anderson and really get to know more about his wine (also a nice surprise treat to have Kelley there, too). It's always wonderful meeting (and drinking) with fellow wino-s, but this was a really nice and thoughtful group of people!

I agree with Jim, hearing everyone talk through the blinds was super interesting!

There wasn't a bad bottle all night, they all had wonderful stories to tell. Among the Patty Greens, my highlights were the 07 (could have been burgundy!) and 11 (loved the herbal qualities that developed later in the night), and the 05 and 09 were really beautifully balanced.

Couldn't have asked for a nicer evening! I look forward to the next time we can do something similar!

Sorry to have been unable to make it, glad it sounds like it went off brilliantly. Is there a thread with notes?

Bravo to all, espec. Jim and Kelley.

Mike, it was a good group, but we could have used you there both for your company AND your TNs. [cheers.gif] -Jim

Thanks so much to Kirk for organizing, and to Jim for making it a reality. Really fun group of people - I had a great time!

Here's my tasting story from the event.

JIM ANDERSON / PGC DINNER - ETZEL BLOCK VERTICAL AND BLIND TASTING - New England (6/1/2019)

A lovely dinner with Jim Anderson from Patricia Green Cellars. Highlight was a multi-year vertical of Etzel Block. We also did a blind tasting which was, well, humbling as usual. I won't post my notes from the blind because they are just embarrassing.
Warmup Oddball vintage flight
Vintages that were imperfect in some way - strange weather, etc. Warm year flight
title says it all. Ripe, big. Four best vintages
well, how do you call "best?" These were great though. Posted from CellarTracker

Tariq, sorry to hear you got a sense of the 2012 being corked. I am usually pretty sensitive to that, but I guess I missed it.

I did post something on this in the Wine Talk as well. It was so nice to meet you and your wonderful wife. We had a really great group of folks there for this. I hope we can all catch up again the next time there's a gathering in the greater Boston area.
