We shall continue to rain in with love, charitable support and good people along with good food and wines.

Well that sucks.
Nah - done it before in the rain, no problem. If it rains, we all snuggle.

The rain potential is not going away via the NWS discussion update. Let's assume it does rain, and we adjust by using the tent. Here is the question, and I need to hear from you folks as your funds drive this event. I don't need lurkers but I want to see candor/comments in reply so I can decide direction.

Would you like to see the event catered in the early afternoon and then again in early evening? We could do Mexican and or Parallel Pizza (Dana Point) for the early portion and then do Basanti ((Indian) for the later catering. We chop the cost across everyone who attends, and it would be cheap. Maybe $15-20 per person for the early portion, and then $10 for the after-party/early evening portion.

OR

Would you like to have people bring pre-cooked, servable (and heatable) dishes for the early portion and then we maintain Basanti for the early evening food delivery. Keep in mind I have just 2 ovens and the BBQ would NOT be in use. We would have to put all the food in the kitchen area and we would need to use part of the tented portion for wine stations.

I need to hear from you please and I am not looking for "doesn't matter" or "whatever you like". Take a position, please.

If it rains, I like the idea of pizza. It goes well with the wines and is easy to eat. I'll gladly chip in whatever is required (although for planning purposes, I will be an early departure as I am down & back weather permitting)

Frank, whatever works, as William said above, we will chip in, no issue.

Erik L. and I were on the phone earlier today, he turned me on to Weather Underground site and I do find it rather very accurate over the past year or so, and although yesterday it was showing just a chance of rain for Saturday with 0.3 inches of precipitation, 2 hours ago it was showing partly cloudy and 57F during the day, just about perfect for my mink long coat. Take it with a grain of salt, of course, this far out, but I think weather will be just fine. And yes, have a back up plan, always :-)

What's the cut off date/time for the tent order?

Tent cut-off is Wednesday per the contract, I believe.

A # of people on Facebook are commenting too, with a split on the two options. Interesting.

We'll see.

I like the idea of Pizza myself - as others have said, it goes with all types of wines and is fairly easy to eat . . .

And if it does rain it'll just be that much more cozy . . .

Cheers!

Hello everyone. The Event File is now updated. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0

Proudly, we have created significant potential in the silent auction, with 60 more items than last year, creating an additional $2,000 in starting bid activity. With that increase, I have chosen to eliminate all single lot items (except for Mags and larger) to help with space, creating 20 less lots than last year. We simply have to keep the garage doable, even in the good fortune of so many more items for 2019. This means you will be bidding on items of 2 more bottles, and I have created some cool lots.

We also have landed about 140 wines, and I think this is the end point for what we will have. A great mix with several new wineries, many who will be in attendance.

I do hope you will review the file and appreciate what has been donated for 2019. Without these donations, let's be clear........we DON'T have this event so thank you to all the wineries and folks who donated to get us to this point of success.

If no grill, I would say Pizza early, if Parallel can handle 50-60 pizzas (that's a LOT of boxes). I'm likely the exception, but I'm usually too distracted wandering around sipping wines and chatting to stop for food. My wife usually brings me a plate since I forget to stop and take a break.

My wife, on the other hand, loves the wide variety of dishes, since she's not a wine geek. Maybe this is why the vote is split?

If I we're to stay late, which we usually don't so we can return to our son, I would place a strong vote for Basanti.

Andrew, thank you. Noted.

To all of you, the Station listing is now posted to the Event File. You will see now where all the wines are being assigned throughout the house. You should bear in mind that that even with 2 bottles of each wine and 1 oz pours, some selections will be finished quicker than others. Should you want to taste a specific wine(s), I suggest you find that station first, taste the wine(s) you want early in the event. REMINDER....1 oz pours please--enjoy the wines but please be respectful of the event.

Okay, I will take a position and say to plan on it raining. In that case Pizza/Indian. I really enjoy the food everyone brings, but the logistics would be tough with rain. This is late input, but I would still encourage people to bring cheese, crackers, and etc. Just a little something to keep the palate fresh until the food arrives. Although you might be getting the food delivered, if that is the option, earlier to accomplish the same goal.

Good evening. Quick update, as I suspect some of you want one.

In the morning, I will check the forecast once more and if it continues to indicate a rain-free Saturday, I will cancel the tent and we can settle in for the usual BYOF Falltacular. However, if we end up with the tent, we will have a simpler format to ensure the event has enough space for all the wines, all of you, and whatever reduced food layout we will use.

As for the Friday dinner, 10 people remain on the wait list. My plan is to continue to wait and see, either by cancellation of confirmed people and/or better weather, thereby getting the wait list in part/all included. Luciana's has made it clear, and this is fair of them to say, that they cannot put people outside unless there is clear weather: they simply do not have the space to punt and rush people inside from the patio if it rains.

Finally, the Event File is again updated, as more auction commitments and wine for the house was added today. We will have our largest Silent Auction ever, and what is likely our most diverse inside/pouring set of wines we have ever enjoyed. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/n6y1k2ej149j ... yrl4a?dl=0

To all, I have made the decision to cancel the tent. With a 'no' rain chance of 80%, I can live with that risk. Should it shower, we can get everyone inside until it passes. That said, we will do our customary event, with everyone asked to bring either a side dish or item for the grill, or both. Remember, all food is to be shared, just like the wines.

We will do the Afterparty starting at 600pm, with terrific Indian food delivered by Basanti. To enjoy the food, please bring $10 cash and you can have what you like. I will post the menu before Saturday. If you plan to stay for the Afterparty, you may do the Indian or skip it. I also encourage you to bring Champagne or Craft Beer for the Afterparty, which is also a Falltacular tradition.

Finally, I ask EVERYONE to read the Success Guide For our Guests document that is posted in the link below. It includes my expectation about 1 ounce pours during the event, as well as reminders to keep the event successful. If you are new to the event or you as a veteran of the event have referred someone new for this year, please be sure they read it. One page in length, it is 5 minutes well spent.

I want to share with everyone the wineries who donated to make 2019 Falltacular possible this weekend. Some of these wineries are new to the event, others have been with us for more than a decade as donating supporters. I share this list because I want you to see the names of wineries who give back, donating their craft to ultimately help us raise money to protect women and children from domestic violence, providing emergency shelter, counseling, housing and transitional services so they can change their lives. In some instance, even save them from begin killed in the relationship they are fleeing. To learn more about the charity, Laura's House, please click here. https://www.laurashouse.org/

I ask that you consider these wineries among a list of those who give back, and who are doing something to help within the Falltacular community. If you are spending $$ with them already, know that they are helping do good.

And, here is the Silent Auction listing for tomorrow. If we can generate $25,000 from this list in auction sales, we will have done great work for Laura's House. Thanks to the wineries and the Berserker community for making the donations below a reality.

AFTER-PARTY update. Last week, I asked you to post your support for the Indian food as our afterparty cuisine. For those staying for the afterparty, we will begin at 6PM. Roshan from Basanti Restaurant is delivering enough Indian food for 50 people, based on what you all posted.

When the food arrives, I will collect $10 cash from each person to cover the cost. You are not required to pay/participate in this food but you should make sure that if you didn't post your interest to me last week that you do that now. Once the food runs out on Saturday night, that's it. I simply want to make sure I have enough food so post back if you have not already.

Remember too to bring Champagne and beer if you are staying for the afterparty.

Good morning to all of you. It's humbling for us to do this event, that all of you keep coming back year after year to support Laura's House. As we consider yesterday, some thoughts I want to pass along.....

The fellowship and relationships that are in the core of this event are powerful. The generosity, warmth, sense of family and all the threads that tie these important things together were on display yesterday. An amazing group of people you are.

Thank you to the wineries for the support, as well as the individual donators who made the inside of the house and the garage successful. When I have a firm # to share with all of you, I will post it in the coming days. And for those who spent $$$ in the garage auction, we will surely break any existing record we had for the total.

As we put a close to this year, please send a winery (or more) a note if you enjoyed their wines yesterday. What we want to remember is that without the wineries, there is no wine being poured. Email or message them to show them their wines were appreciated. I always thank them but I need for you as a group to do the same. Please.

And again, THANK YOU!

I was remiss yesterday in thanking Neudesic and fellow Berserker Mark Jones for the support in providing all of the custom glasses not only for the Friday dinner, but the event last night too. Mark, really appreciate the dedication you and the firm show Laura's House. Rock solid man and we appreciate it and you.

It was a treat to attend for the first time and feel the energy, the commitment to something worthwhile, the fellowship and camaraderie, the dedication of many who put out tons of time for the set up, silent auction wines/ items, food, serving, cleanup and effort to make this happen. Frank and the crew have got this figured out and do it righteously and with precision and they were still standing at the end of Saturday, but I know there was still lots to Sunday and beyond.

For me, it was also special to put some faces with some names and to give some appreciation to many I admire from just reading their posts on WB and to meet Todd and be able to thank him for what he has created. It was also special for me to introduce my other half to some of those from OC I've already connected with and to meet their spouses, SOs.

So, a final total is in order. We did crush the record from 2018, beating it by about $7,000.

We did $17,000 and change at the front door.
We did $30,000 and change in the silent auction. Of note, we had an opening bid total of about $15,500 and so we damn near doubled that with your bidding and winning totals.

These are both records. Big time. $47,000 raised.

To do $47,000 in one day is tremendous. Again, think about it...this is a completely volunteer-based event. All of you donate willingly, from the wineries to the guests, and it all goes to Laura's House.

When you think about Wendy's survivor story from Saturday that you heard live, these are the women and people you are helping to save and turn their lives around.

In a world where ego, division and narcissism defines leadership, where collaboration and leadership is missing, we proved as a family of people we can beat back that dynamic and for one day, regardless of what you believe and putting aside differences, we came together as one to do something important. Jill Murray and I are humbled by all of you in showing the leadership, generosity and kindness to do something bigger than ourselves for Laura's House.

In service, thank you.
My WOTY candidates for 2019:
2014 Marie Courtin Champagne Eloquence Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut

My best wines of 2018:
2017 Kutch Falstaff Sonoma Coast PN
2012 Marguet Père et Fils Champagne La Grande Ruelle Ambonnay

Kindness matters.

Perspectives of a Newbie

Wow.

Thank you Frank.
The energy, effort, planning, and commitment it takes to put on a successful and wonderful event as Falltacular is significant. Your enthusiasm and passion for supporting Laura’s House and its mission energizes a large and diverse community to get behind an issue, put service above self, work to help others and raise significant funds for Laura’s House. Well done, sir!

Thank you Frank and Jill for opening up your home and welcoming us with warmth, hugs and appreciation. Such kindness and generosity is comforting and inspiring.

I was blessed to show up early – although it was in error. My electronic devices are all set for auto time-zone correction. When I woke, refreshed even after the wine dinner (and subsequent follow-on ‘wine tasting’), and saw the phone time at 11, I hustled to get breakfast, shower and drive over to Frank’s home. Arriving at 12:15 p.m. (my time) I saw Frank, Sean K, Arnie, Heather and Mike G setting up. A little surprised I thought that maybe the event started at 1 and not noon. I felt a little out of place as everyone was in their own rhythm. (That could have been the soul R&B music playing through the house.)
I offered to help and so was able to provide some assistance. Chris W. showed up a little later as did Mark delivering the wine glasses. It was only when Chris W. was leaving and said it was 11, that I looked at my phone and saw my phone showed 2 (my East Coast time ). So, three hours early for OC time. The Auto time change not working. Thank you Steve Jobs as I was able to help with set-up and felt comforted when a few people voiced the proverb “many hands make light work.” Bonus - I got to taste many of the wines pre-admission and could have some early morning wine geek moments with Brig.

An additional highlight was being on volunteer duty at one of the Pinot tables with Margaret Bayston, the Executive Director of Laura’s House. So fun to talk with Margaret with the charming English lilt in her voice expressing amazement and appreciation for the work, camaraderie and financial support generated at Falltacular.

As a side note – when I told family, friends and colleagues that I was flying across country to spend two days at this event, I got some puzzled looks. They understood the wine thing with me. They’ve seen the wine deliveries. They also acknowledged and understood the charitable mission side with me. But many remained puzzled, quizzically asking “So T., you’re flying across country and going to a house where there are strangers that you have only met in some chat board over the internet? Are you sure you’re going to be OK?” Adding, “If you just so happen to ‘disappear’ and are never heard from again, may I have first dibs on what’s in your cellar?”

The reality is that after almost 9 ½ years on the board, I already had a good sense of the people that I met. And from a distance, there are many folks that I admire and have witnessed, albeit from that distance, their acts of kindness. Being able to meet them and tell them face to face, and thank them for their contributions to the community, and their acts of kindness for others, was heartwarming for me. And well worth the trouble of flying across country to be part of Falltacular.

Thank you all who worked on the event, supported with donations, participated in the dinner or the spectacular Falltacular day, support the mission, and were kind and welcoming to this newbie.

And your attendance made it so much more special to me, my friend. Your comments about the 'why' are so spot on - and in addition to the great cause of Laura's House, I continue to make the trek to shake hands, give hugs, and share laughs and stories with folks IN PERSON. What a treat . . .

Hope your travels were safe and sound heading home - and it really was so much fun hanging out with you in person. And thanks for the beers, too!

Cheers!

grouphug Simply an event that we refuse to miss! Always a highlight of the year, this is an event that shows the "true" side of most winos. Incredibly generous and personable.....this is what people are capable of; If they just try. [winner.gif]

Cheers!
