Portland OR - any burg lovers want to drink with the newbies?

Hi Portland Bersekers,

My wife and I recently moved from London. She’s British, I’m from Chicago. We were trying to figure out how to meet some of you.

I was wondering if there were any burg lovers interested in joining an off-line?

Place: TBD
Date: TBD - I’d love early December, so it’s nice and holiday-like.
Theme: TBD - doesn’t need to be too grand.

I'm a little nervous proposing an off-line to folks I don’t know, but it worked well when I did the same after arriving in London ten years ago. Why not try again?

What do you think?

Many of the members at Willamette Wine Storage are big burgundy fans. You could look at joining.

This is a good start, I cellar at Portland Wine Storage and they have a good mix. Also a members lounge with stem ware.

Does Willamette Wine Storage have a lounge?

I my opinion, many PDX wine enthusiasts are local AVA fans and you might have more success combining.

Cheers
Jeremy

Jeremy,
I used to be at PWS. I personally prefer WWS for their community of wine enthusiasts. Every Wednesday is a themed social and there are plenty of informal gatherings. Yes, there is a lounge.

I would be up for something.
If something gets going, send a PM. I don’t check this area too often.

Did anything get organized here?

My focus areas:
- Cote d'Or
- Piedmont
- Champagne, grower
- Loire
- Jura

Old-school, traditional producers.

I also plan to be at La Paulee for the 11th year in a couple of weeks.

Thanks, -mark

Mark,
Nothing did, but I’m willing to participate or host a the wine locker for up to four others. I have mainly Oregon Pinot, but I do own a few burgs.

I am interested in a get together, organized or just bring a bottle. I have access to several other collectors New World or Old, I'm more in the New World camp. Maybe a private room or restaurant gathering? I can offer Portland Wine Storage space up to 8 people for free, after that it's a $100 room rental.

If someone plans something for a Friday or Saturday (during school year), let me know. I can probably make most themes work, except if it is white Burgundy.

Bumping this thread to see if we can't actually get something hashed out.

Last Friday in May? First Friday in June?

I have a 2010 Pinot noir event I'm hosting, I might a few spaces available. The date is 2/9 and the event is a private.
Hit me up if you are interested.

I'm not on the board that often, but always interested in meeting cool wine lovers in PDX. I store part of the cellar at WWS, too, so that's convenient.

It might be good to try again to put something together. The Tasting I'm hosting I'm providing the 15 bottle horizontal. I like to check out how vintages hold up with different wine making styles. Maybe a 2013 Burg/pinot tasting could be next.

I had to draw a line. I could have researched more, but I ended up with several 10's and this line up just fell together with little focus on wine making styles and regional influence.
Current list is;
2010 Paul Lato Pinot Noir Lancelot Pisoni
2010 Melville Pinot Noir Carrie's
2010 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Melville Vineyard
2010 Sojourn Pinot Noir Wohler Vineyard Russian River Valley
2010 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Old Vines Summa
2010 Aubert Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard Sonoma Coast
2010 Rhys Pinot Noir Bearwallow Vineyard
2010 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills
2010 Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir Orchard Block
2010 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard
2010 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve
2010 Felton Road Pinot Noir Bannockburn
2010 Pascal Marchand Gevrey Chambertin "Cazetiers" Premier Cru
2010 Remoissenet Beaune "Greves" Prem Cru

I'm not good with writing tasting notes, I'll try to make that happen.

Hey, nice to see my old thread got revived... a few times. I kind of gave up on it so hadn’t checked offline planner. Doh.

I’d be happy to do a 2013 Burg / Pinot tasting. Or a Fourrier vertical? Or our own “Not La Paulee?” Or anything, really.

Should we set a date in March?

I will PM those who replied in the past so they don’t miss the thread.

I am likely to be out of town in early or mid-march, most likely the week of the 9th. Should be available otherwise.

I'm potentially in, as I'm in Portland relatively frequently for business and this would provide a great excuse to go. I don't have much Burgundy, but could find something fun (lots of domestic PN, though).

Portland Wine storage is almost always open Sunday evening for hosting an event in the tasting room. Does someone have access to another place? I understand that Willamette wine storage also has a Tasting Room. , does anyone have access? The location availability might determine the date we could meet.

Willamette wine storage is open every day but Wednesday night as there is a standing social that day. Members can bring three people, so we’d need to get two or three other members. Should I pursue this?

I also am a member at WWS and will agree it’s a great place to drink. I’d agree to meet there if that’s the consensus.

But wouldn’t a nice dinner and Chambolle be better? Chambolle theme is just an example, I’m super flexible. If we do choose a theme others are short on, I’m sure we can arrange a buy-in.

I agree a nice dinner would be better. OTOH, I'm short of suggestions for corkage-friendly places that can seat 10-12 or whatever. And I'm perfectly fine bringing some burgundy-friendly to a potluck, and can't think of good burg-friendly food that would be good after DoorDash or whatever. So whatever we can work out, I'm in for.

I would be very interested to attend this as well. There have been same terrific Goodfellow dinners at Ned Ludd and the cuisine would seem to work perfectly. I bet they would be flexible.

Bergerac may also be a possibility. I’d bet a deal could be struck regarding excessive corkages. We would likely need to bring stems though.

Same; I like nice dinners but would be happy with WWS. Maybe we can just do that to keep things simple for our first go-around?

Nice. I can bring a couple of extra stems if that's an issue for anyone

I did the 2010 Pinot tasting at Portland Wine Storage and we did the potluck style. If that is the direction it would be nice to get a heads up as to what people are bringing, this way we don't end up with 12 of the same dish.
I have 18 Riedel Neb/Pinot restaurant stems that I could bring if needed.

Looks like 5 are in so far: Lee, Jeremy, Yao, Andy, Joseph. Who else wants in? How many have +1s that will join us? I haven't talked to Melissa yet to know if she wants in, but it's likely.

7pm is a little late for me on a Sunday, but not absolutely too late. If we did pot luck, we wouldn't have to wait for food. Or if we did the "Family Feast" at Ned Ludd (whole table needed), we would cut out the time to decide on food and place orders.

For potluck, we could host here in Montavilla if the crowd isn't too large. Jeremy -- what are the requirements for getting space at PWS? Any WWS members interested, and how would we get space there?

I could try for earlier 6:30, but I can always arrive late.
*For Portland wine storage up to 10 people without booking the room. Sunday's Are usually open. I would have to let people in if its here.
I could invite some people from the storage also of we need more.
