12-14-18 - NYC offline, 2015 Burgs, PDH- any interest?

#1 Post by Tom Reddick » October 26th, 2018, 11:05 pm

Good evening all,

I will be in NYC December 12-16, and at this point 12-14-18 is still wide open.

I know it is a long shot picking a single date, but wanted to give it a try since I have a lot of 2015s that I have not yet had a chance to open- and this is a vintage where I went deep and want to try several young.

Peking Duck House is just a suggestion- open to other ideas. I have not been there in a while, and I miss the place! To be specific- I am suggesting the location at 53rd and 3rd Avenue.

I have other tastings going during the visit- so for this one I would offer up 2015 Burgundies. That could be entire theme, or we could try them against other recent vintages, or just let everyone bring what they want. I am wide open.

For 2015s I have on hand for tasting, and taking luggage limits into account, I could bring any 4 of the following bottles with me depending on what other guests may want to try,

2015 Meo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges Boudots
2015 Meo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges Aux Murgers
2015 Drouhin Vosne-Romanee Les Petit Monts
2015 Parent Pommard Les Epenots
2015 Jadot Pommard Rugiens
2015 Jadot Chambolle Les Fuees
2015 Jadot Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots

And of course a nice Riesling- Schaefer or Haag most likely.

If we can get 6-8 people total I think that is enough to make it work out nicely. Might be hard to get a larger reservation on a Friday night. Please post here if interested, and if it can work- I can solidify plans within next 2 weeks.

Tom.

Tom, looks like I should be able to make it into the city for this event. Love the idea of Peking Duck House, but happy to attend wherever the locale ends up.

Will need to seek permission wife and body to do another offline on 12/14 (on 12/13 we are doing GCs the night before - I think we still have room if you are interested), but I am interested. Would bring a 2015 Hubert Lignier Trilogie and/or a 2015 L'Arlot Forets.

Excellent- between this and a couple of PMs I think we are a solid 4 and potential 6. So I will consider it a go and plan to make reservations a couple of weeks ahead of time after confirming with everyone.

Still room if anyone else sees this and wishes to join- I am just confirming we now have enough interest to make it a go.

And on wine- at this point, bring what you like that will go with PDH and burgs.

Best,

Tom.

A very busy weekend for every Noo Yawker.
My best friend is in town, and so is my wife's former boyfriend. We will be throwing a wine dinner for them at Union Square Cafe on Friday night. Then, on Saturday, some friends are having a holiday party, and plan to serve scores of aged Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone, and California wines.

I'm interested. Duck House is good! Please ask for Alex the mgr to confirm no corkage fee. Even though they advertise this there has been some question. I'm happy to talk to them.

Thank you Tom- will be happy to have you join us. I will put you on the list. Will PM everyone a couple of weeks before to confirm.

And BTW- anyone coming who wants to taste anything in particular out of my list- please say the word. I am assuming I will be bringing the Drouhin and Meos for sure :P

Victor- agreed , I knew it was a long shot with time of year and being a Friday, but happily I have been able to get a small group together. Sorry to miss you. For all our occasional sparring on the wine BBs, you are one of the last few New Yorkers I have long hoped to meet and taste with (I had a noodle shop too once upon a time.) Perhaps in the spring? We Texans don't do too well in the City once the snow comes.

Several of us had a BYOW dinner at PDH Midtown on Friday, and absolutely enjoyed it. Every dish was executed wonderfully. The total bill was less than $45 per person.

It really is the perfect offline place to me- especially as a Burg/Champ/Riesling fan. I remember going for a tasting the first time I ever went to NYC about 10 years ago, and I have been almost every visit since!

More generally to the group- bumping this one last time in case anyone else interested, and I will start sending PMs this week to confirm. With it being a Friday tasting at the holidays, I should get a reservation sooner than later to be safe.

Best,

Tom.

Do we have a date? Dec. 14, as you mention, is good for me.

Apologies- got tied up with work and such (including recovery from the Dallas Berserker Fest), and just now sent a group PM to everyone. We have a max of 6 and as long as there are 3-4 of us, all is a go. Once I hear back this week from people I will make the reservation. We should still be in good time on that- I would be more worried if it were 8+ people being a Friday during the holidays. But we should be good.

PDH is a big place. I don't think eight would be a problem.

I am in on 12/14. I'll bring a Hubert Lignier Chaffots.
I am also a +1 if that's possible. He has not yet selected, but I am encouraging him to bring a 2015 Duroche Lavaut St. Jacques or 2015 Hubert Lignier La Riotte. Can't get the Hubert Lignier VV in time.

As I am a total burgundy neophyte owning no 2015 red burgs I will bring a 2010 Bonneau Corton Charlemagne as a starter and also will bring a bubbly tbd.

Just to confirm here- this morning I woke up with the beginnings of bronchitis (confirmed late morning) and had to cancel my trip. Those who had committed to attend voted to defer rather than carry on with the event.

Apologies to all. I will save the bottles and let's hopefully do this in the spring. I will reach out to all who had confirmed for this tasting.

Haha. Thank you Victor. I will keep you in the loop when we replan. Next spring is 10th anniversary of my first trip to NYC- so will have to make it memorable on the wine front.

I hope that you have recovered.
Last night, I treated some friends and former colleagues for dinner at Union Square Cafe, opening 1989 Pichon Baron, 1994 Stonestreet Legacy, and some 1989 and 1990 Vouvray. Everything showed very well, and quite young still.

Tonight, however, the big stuff comes out at the catered party which a friend throws yearly at his loft. The repertoire will run the full gamut of 1982, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, and 1990 Bordeaux and Burgundy wines, the former including Mouton, La Mission, Latour, Margaux, Lafleur, Palmer, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande, Leoviille Las Cases, etc. The sideshows will involve Sauternes, classic Napa reds, etc.

Sadly so, one of my dear friends at this dinner just died at age 57. He and his wife had invited us to a NYE celebration at their new apartment.
Count your blessings.

I am very sorry to hear Victor.

As to your previous post- yes, finally recovered well and feeling quite fortunate- especially in light of your news. The older I get, the more often I receive such news. Does not get any easier.
