So Who Likes to Offline? City-by-city "database" PLEASE PM IF YOUR CITY HAS CHANGED

#1 Post by Mike Grammer » December 20th, 2014, 10:10 am

OK gang. I tossed this over to Todd just as an idea and he said go ahead and run with it...so I think I will.

Granted, I have much to gain from this since I travel a lot with a primary purpose of meeting fellow 'philes in cities near and far.

But, thought I to myself, wouldn't it be nice for everyone to know who they might be able to contact in any particular city to try to go out for some dinner and wines?

With that in mind, I thought I'd start this---and I guess I'll take on the chore of managing information as it comes in.

All of youse can help me if you are comfortable enough to list others besides yourself who you know would be interested in doing an OL with an out-of-town guest (or, equally applicable, someone new to WB). I think it would also help if you indicated whether or not you'd be willing to stand as an "organizer" for OL purposes. (with thanks to Jay Hack for noting this oversight, (O) beside your name means you are indeed willing to take the lead on organizing)

For the cities besides Toronto, I *don't* know whether all the listed people are, in fact, WB-ers. A * means I've met the person and can, sort of [grin.gif] vet them.

Wish I had known that Mike. Just got back from 11 days in Toronto. Was there for the big Wednesday snow which held us over a couple of extra days because we couldn't get to the airport. The last time I was in Toronto some years ago Jay D'Antonio and Dr. Larry Pancer were always up for an offline.

Chuckle. And sorry we missed you, Michael--precisely what something like this might help with, or so I may hope. And hey---it may not be a good idea....but a world without ideas is like a world without sunshine, no? :)

ps, unfortunately haven't crossed paths with Jay and Larry in years either, but some mutual friends do still see 'em.

Mike...If you reach out to me, Michael Giammalvo, David Dickerson, Jonathan Loffi or Billy Hall, pretty confident we can rally for a casual offline in Nashville...have hosted for other out-of-towners.

And need to look you up the next time we visit my father in Toronto.

Mike great idea. I hear all the time people lamenting that they missed someone in town and would have definitely come out for them.

Count me in for NYC for both.

Great topic. I've met many from this board when traveling and everyone has been beyond hospitable and welcoming, not to mention sharing great wines.
I know several winemakers here in the Grand River AVA; the wines may not be world-class but I'm happy to arrange visits for anyone interested in seeing what Ohio is capable of. Also happy to host though I'm ~30 minutes east of Cleveland proper (though also just off I-90 for anyone traveling east of town).
I hope he doesn't mind me mentioning but forum member Loren Sonkin has helped arrange local offlines for both out of town forum members and wine makers closer to town- I've had the opportunity to meet both OP Mike and others on this board at them and all have been fantastic.

I think people know I'm in the Capital District of NYS (Albany, Schenectady, Troy), but Saratoga is only 40 minutes away and the Berkshires about an hour. We're also on the way between Montreal and NYC or Boston and points west. Happy to host if the timing works.

Not sure what the idea of the thread is.
There are a lot of L.A. offliners. So many that sometimes the groups intersect and sometimes things aren't everyone encompassing. I'm usually up for an offline and organize my share, out or at my place. So anyone coming to LA can give a board shout and find people to meet up with.

Thanks everyone. John, I think I wanted to start it for a few reasons.

a) what you say about LA is certainly true, but what about a new recruit to WB who doesn't know right away who to reach out to---this could help

b) for other cities, we'd hopefully have a compendium in one place as a basic reference for those who may be visiting in those places.

I'll try to get around to compiling the list from this thread into one post over the weekend.

Cheers,

Mike

Can't say I know many others down here in Charlotte, NC yet - relatively recent transplant from the DC area - but always willing to share a nice bottle with someone who appreciates it.

We're just about 10 minutes from the airport, so the offer also applies if you have a long layover or if USAirways/AA strands you.

I've planned a number of offlines in the Orange County area. I'm always down. I'd list the people I was with, but I think they'll see this thread shortly. Unlike me, they're actually known around here. We'll see if they come around. champagne.gif

Sadly, I've never enjoyed an offline, living in such a remote area. With two small kids, it can be tough to travel on a whim, though we do travel a fair amount, with enough notice. And, we get to Austin quite a bit (though I don't notice a lot of Austin action here).

Would be nice to have this in a format that we could easily access - even if it was just a sticky thread maintained constantly with new data to have the first post up to date, or a sortable spreadsheet hosted on the cloud. Ideas?

I *will* amend the first post with a comprehensive listing by next week latest.
El Paso, TX. But, we go everywhere. It would be great to meet some of you at some point.

Kinda new to the WB group, but we have had over 20 off lines in Orange County at the Wine Cellar Club in Irvine, strictly inviting Cellartracker folks. In the future, I will definitely cross post to this forum to get better participation. I think it's also about time I hit up a few of the other off lines that take place down here with Todd and Frank and Brig, et al.

Maybe akin to what Frank's done with an Excel sheet in a dropbox for FallTacular, Todd? Could you set something up somewhere on the BB that just hyperlinks to something like that? I'm not the techie here, malheureusement (though I do have a copy of the Hacker's Dictionary at home).

Mike, could you list all the folks who wish to be listed in the database by revising the first post and keeping it updated?
Apparently I'm lazy, have a narrow agenda, and offer little in the way of content and substance (RMP) (and have a "penchant for gossip" -KBI)

This would be much more useful as a "database" if all the replies were catalogued in the OP by Country, State/Province, City.

Nice timing guys :) On it...right now...

OK, I've updated for what I have listed up to this point. Todd, I really do think there may be some merit in stickying in Wine Talk for a short period---there are so *many* more people who OL who may be unaware the thread is going at the moment----just thinking about the hordes in OC, Atlanta, DC, NYC, Boston, Houston, Tuscon, Chicago...just to name a few right off the top.
