While everyone focused on the wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, the Nebbiolo wines of Nervi were available and super affordable at a quality level at or better than some Barolo/Barbareso. The wines are from from Gattinara, a region further north into the Alps foothills in the once forgotten lands of Alto Piemonte. In these lands the Nebbiolo grape goes by the local name ‘Spanna’.
Those forgotten days are gone as the Alto Piemonte has moved from being remembered for the value opportunity to being on trend these days. But its not just about being re-discovered, the quality has never been better in these regions and Nervi is a leading producer.
Enter Roberto Conterno - the legendary Barolo producer of house Giacomo Conterno run by the enigmatic 3rd generation Roberto Conterno. No other Barolo producer, except maybe Bartolo Mascarello, is as revered and sought after by collectors the world round. Roberto has built his family’s winery into what many are starting to call the DRC of Barolo. A nod to the most exclusive wine producer in the world, Burgundy’s Domaine de la Romanee Conti (D.R.C.)
So while it was surprising to hear that Conterno was acquiring a majority (90%) stake in Nervi, it was less so as you understand this bold and strategic move to further cement Roberto and his family’s legacy in the Piemonte.
