Sancerre from Saint-Satur & Menetou-Salon

Domaine Gerard Fiou Sancerre

Singular terroir & masterful winemaking puts “Le Grand Roc” at the top with Boulay and the Cotat cousins for a fraction of the price.

We also have two of the little wines from Fiou further below the main event. These wines are excellent Sauvignon Blanc, showing true village/grape typicity and complexity to please!
Sancerre Blanc 2017 - In the similar growing season of 2015 this scored a 92WS
Menetou-Salon 2015 - Maybe as pure and as profound as Sauvignon-Blanc gets for the $ from this higher elevation region of Kimmeridgian soils.

2014 Sancerre Le Grand Roc “Terroir de Silex”
Saint-Satur, Sancerre, Loire Valley
93 pts Wine Spectator

  • From the lesser-known, over-achieving Sancerre village of Saint-Satur

  • 100% Sauvignon Blanc from 60+year-old vines.

  • A prime, single plot of 2.5 acres rich in flint located in the middle of the hillside where a “Large stone” of flint (Grand Roc) stands proudly.

Viticulture
Low yield, organic farming with traditional plowing of the soil. Green harvest and manual leaf thinning. Hand-picked at harvest with sorting tables before a gentle pneumatic pressing. You would be hard pressed to find the new oak imparted in this wine.

Vinification
Fermentation in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks. A part of the wine is vinified in “cement” and “inox” tanks and another part in new oak barrels for about 10 months. Aged on its fine lees with batonnage” (lees stirring) to keep the lees in contact with the wine, further deepening the wine’s depth and complexity.

Harvest by hand, sorting tables to select optimal fruit, and a gentle pneumatic pressing before vinification.

Vinification
Fermentation happens in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks followed by a maturation of 6 month on fine lees with batonnage each week to keep the lees in contact with the wine.

2015 Menetou-Salon
Menetou-Salon, Loire Valley

Menetou-Salon is the neighboring region (AOC) to Sancerre and is distinctive for its excellent Kimmeridgian soils that produce excellent Sauvignon Blanc wines similar to Sancerre but for less money than Sancerre can ask because it is less famous and harder to pronounce (men-ah-two). This is an utterly pure and classic example of the Sauvignon Blanc grape and a must for any Sauvignon Blanc fan to get in their glass.

Soil
A 5-acre plot of Kimmeridgian limestone. Terroir was made of ocean deposit from the Jurrasic era. Tiny oyster and oyster shell fossils are found all over this soil.

Viticulture
Low yields and organic farming of the vines with traditional plowing of the soil. Green harvest and manual leaf thinning. Harvest by hand, sorting tables to select optimal fruit, and a gentle pneumatic pressing before vinification.

Vinification
Gentle settling for 24 hours at cold temperatures to clarify the wine. Fermentation happens in thermoregulated stainless steel tanks followed by a maturation of 6 months on fine lees with batonnage each week to keep the lees in contact with the wine.

Menetou-Salon is the tiniest appellation of the Centre Loire which also includes Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume. It neighbors Sancerre just to the southwest. What makes the steep hillsides of Menetou-Salon unique is a single terroir of Kimmeridgian limestone or “Marne à huîtres” (Oyster marl) like they say locally. It’s the same terroir found in the Grand Cru hillside of Chablis or in the Aube sub-region of Champagne. This soil typicity combined with a slightly higher altitude than its neighbors at 1,000 feet, provide a profoundly mineral, floral and ripe citrus fruit laden fresh character to the wines.
