Depending on your cholesterol level, you might want to try a sandwich at the famous Primanti Brothers (James Beard “American Classic” award winner). If you do, get an egg in addition to the french fries crammed into your sandwich. Go to the original location. Die happy.
Legume in Oakland is good near the university. Spoon and casbah are nearby in east liberty and shadyside respectively.

I once tried to order a burger for lunch in a Pittsburgh restaurant. The waitress refused. Apparently it was Friday and the only thing I could have was fish parmesan. Not even kidding.
