Saw this on Facebook
Starting Friday, November 1, join Dutch & Doc's for their Balena pop-up, which will feature a menu of Balena favorites like the tagliolini nero with crab and sea urchin. You won't want to miss it! Make your reservation ASAP before availability is gone. #DutchandDocs

I didn't even know it was still open. I never hear anyone talk about it.

I don't know anyone who would want to be caught dead there. Too many other options and he's still clearly a massive dickbag

Too bad they can’t resurrect the wine list for the pop up. And it sounds like they have no plans to bring the restaurant back. A shame.

Anyone have a suggestion for a place close to the Fairmont @Millenium Park.
I have to fly out Sunday night after a wedding Saturday, so want to leave my bags at hotel, hit an early dinner nearby, then retrieve bags to head to the airport. So it needs to be nearby and can’t be a real drawn out affair.

There is nothing really with in walking distance as the hotel is pretty Far east. There are tons of restaurants within a 10 min Uber. It depends on what you want. If you are just traveling with carry on you could head west (towards O'hare) and the restaurant will keep your bag giving you more time to enjoy your meal.

Sundays may limit your choice a bit.

How much time will you have approximately?

If dim sum or other Chinese is of interest, there is a decent restaurant - Ming Hin Cuisine - on the park several blocks away. They have several locations, you’re looking for the Downtown one. They are a Bib Gourmand winner

wouldn't Cherry Circle Room, Acanto, or the Gage be the best options? Those are the places that come to mind first

Thanks Guys.
We take off from Midway at 9:40. Backtracking means arrive there at 8:20, Uber from Fairmont at 8:00 after grabbing bags, so could leave a restaurant not far away in an Uber at 7:45. So I’m thinking of a 5:30 table somewhere we we can be in and out of in about 2 hrs.. So that means something not too far, but not necessarily right there; and something that’s just a la Carte, not some sort of tasting menu format.

It's been a while since this thread has seen some action. Had dinner at Porto last night. Absolutely wonderful. Food, service, wine all top notch. Large selection of conservas. The room is really great also. One thing I found interesting is that the entire restaurant is almost all counter or communal seating with just a couple of 4 tops.
Some highlights of the evening were the pork cheeks, grilled octopus and seaweed pasta. Desserts were fun and interesting also.
This is an absolute must try..... one of the better meals I have had in Chicago and only been open 3 months.

This is the real deal.

George,

I fully agree with your take. I’ve only been once and can’t wait to go back. They may need to reduce the wine list a smidge as time goes on, but I was super impressed with the whole experience when I went

Given the low attendance currently at local restaurants, is anyone buying gift cards now for future use later? Might help with current cash flow problems.

Anyone got quarantine takeout recommendations? We’ve liked Wherewithal and Galit. Alinea was good, too.

I’ve been trying to spread the love around as much as possible. I’ve done:

Serai
SKY
Cebu
Kyōten
Smyth
Perilla
Osteria Langhe

There are other places I want to order from, but I am trying to keep it at like 2x per week

So picked up yesterday at my allotted time seamlessly. Took home and I didn't realize everything they gave us.

Crudite/ Deviled Eggs /Shrimp Cocktail

Salad

Chicken was 2 meaty thighs with red wine sauce and mushrooms, carrots, pearl onion, peas and asparagus. robuchon Mashed potatoes.

Chocolate Pot de Creme and carrot cake

Didn't eat it all it was so much. You need to prepare the dishes together. As I had my in laws over we cooked on the stove but they give microwave instructions also. I have to say I was very impressed. My least favorite dish was the salad. I found the dressing too tart but everyone else loved it. The main course was delicious and for $40 a person a great value.

Drank a 2001 comte Armand Clos de Epeneaux Pommard and it went very well.

Very good meal. The roast chicken, plantains, Brussel sprouts and enchiladas were all wonderful. I would probably pass on the short ribs next time. They were good just nothing special. The tomatillo tart for dessert was amazing.

I did have to wait about 10 min outside which I would prefer not to do. Maybe 5-6 people also waiting. No one ever got close but it was still a bit uncomfortable for me. I much prefer the Alinea group in car pick up.

I thought the duck was good, not great. In retrospect, I would have cut the duck off the bone and reheated the entire dish in a skillet with duck fat. It dried out a bit in the oven.

It was good, tasty. I liked the salad dressing, the dessert was delicious, the green beans were ok (maybe not my thing). The duck was good, as was the bean sauce with it. I guess it was worth $45. Glad I did it, but wasn't wowed. Depending on what they offer next time, maybe I will do another. Went well with the Rhys Pinot.

Did Kyōten “bento boxes” tonight. Pricey at $120 per. I haven’t had sushi since this all started, so it scratched that itch, but I can’t say I was blown away at the price and wouldn't do it again, and I really like Kyōten.

Picking up pizza at Table, Donkey, and Stick tomorrow. Hear it’s great and I’m excited about that. Matt is a friend but also one of the most creative people I know in the Chicago restaurant business.

Some bars in Chicago are trying to get cocktails to go. Here is the petition if you would like to sign. I can't see how it could be a bad thing. Anything to help them generate revenue IMO.

Smyth Bahn Mi dinner tapped for this Saturday night.

They are also offering 1oz Ossetra Caviar and a bottle of Charles Heidsieck for $120. Thought I would give it a whirl as not a bad price. Champagne is probably $50 retail.

Run do not walk and get the Smyth carry out. Everything was fabulous. From the oysters, to the deviled eggs to the the crab dip and house made chips to the decadently rich Banh Mi and pork rinds to the subtle jasmine rice pudding/rhubarb dessert. champagne.gif

I only saw bottles of wine when I ordered. I don't think IL law allows them to sell open liquor. Only full bottles.

Fat Rice is transforming. It's sad, but I think they might be ahead of the curve. Not sure when it will feel ok to eat at a restaurant again.
Beloved Logan Square restaurant Fat Rice is closing.

In its place, according to a story that broke today in the New York Times, owners Abe Conlon and Adrienne Lo will host Super Fat Rice Mart, a takeout marketplace offering meal kits and groceries to go. Conlon told the Times that "the restaurant for the foreseeable future is dead," noting that even when they can reopen their doors, "people are not going to feel comfortable being in close quarters or being in a cramped dining room."

starting to feel like wave two of closure/reopening/inventory sell off is underway. between aviary/alinea selling all their old/expensive whiskey & fat rice permanently closing (or changing), its been a strange week.

I am very sorry for everyone in this business. Really. I just can't even fathom.

Very interesting NYT article about Fat Rice:

The Aviary in NYC closed permanently. It is possible some of this is from there.
