My buddy and I caught up while sharing the pork rilletes, pate de compagne and a couple skewers of duck hearts to start. Entree was splitting the whole duck platter. Ordered a 2010 Domaine des Lambrays Les Loups Morey-St-Denis off their list, which wasn’t priced unreasonably (though I would’ve loved the mag of 2014 Gonon St Joseph @ $195, but they were unfortunately sold out).

There was a twofold mission in going here, as I’d also been communicating with the co-owner/somm about an unopened bottle of vintage Green Chartreuse from the early 1980s that I had. Notice I said “had”, as that bottle now resides in his extensive collection of Chartreuse. Some vintage bourbon was then consumed by my old friend, my new friend who loves Chartreuse, our server and myself afterwards. Definitely a memorable experience of a meal and post-meal, especially while bumping into an acquaintance of Chuckles Fu that I’d met a couple weeks ago at another random event. And I forgot to mention we had decided to dine there on what was The Morris’ third anniversary, which certainly made the Chartreuse transaction even more memorable for the recipient.

I’ll be back soon, no doubt with some more vintage bourbon to be poured......

Thanks for the write up. I have been a few times for drinks and snacks but never an entire meal, I need to get back.

State Bird Sunday with other rural OR surgeons. After a longish day of meetings and responsibilities it should be a welcome respite.

If your ears were burning we dropped your name last night to get a Prog Dog, which we all really enjoyed. Also got us the reserve wine selections! It was a glorious night out capped off by a 375 ml Maculan Passito sweet wine that was stunning.

So many great dishes but anchovy toast could happily be my death bed meal.

We tried The Progress a few weeks ago. Before that, I'd been under the illusion that Seattle had closed the gap with SF on the dining scene. Stuart and Nicole (and their team) are playing in different league.

Glenn - So happy you enjoyed it. It amazes me how every time I eat at State Bird is makes me so happy beyond just enjoying the great food I mean soulfully happy. Chefs Stuart and Nicole are special people.

It’s such an easy, and unpretentious place. With staggeringly great fare, and an amazing white wine list.

I don’t know the players there but staff could not have been nicer. Epic meal there last night, my first since 2016 and third overall.

Everything is good. Some veteran tips take your time when the carts come rolling out fast and furious. It is ok to pass on some because they will be back around. Some of the dishes on the menu can be ordered in 1/2 sizes. So if you are dining with 2 or a small group you could for example order a 1/2 portion of the State Bird (i.e., Quail) which will allow you to try more dishes. Ask about the off menu Fish Collar and Belly dishes! Do not miss the dumpling which will be on the carts. There is a reserve wine list at State Bird.

And as you saw above the ultimate tip is to order the Prog Dog at The Progress before or after your meal.

We had great meals at both Rich Table and State Bird this past weekend. Not the first visit for either one. We will return to both. I love the vibe in addition to the food at both places. And I could easily enjoy State Bird once a week and not get tired of it.

Benu on Friday was transcendent. Probably a top-3 meal I've had in the US and as good as the best Saison meal I've had.

Back from a few days in San Francisco. I ate at State Bird and wow they are just firing on all cylinders and one of the best out of over 100 meals there. State Bird was closed for Tuesday and Wednesday for private parties so I had to try something new.

I tried Mourad which was just ok. To be fair to them I went with one other person in a business context and we were both in a hurry so only tried a few appetizers and one main. We did not do the larger entrees which are meant for sharing and I suspect the best things on the menu.

And then The Progress which similar to State Bird was just on fire and one of my best meals there.

I hear State Bird is soon to open a Sardine Bar around the corner...stay tuned!

I just was in SF as well and went to Mourad: flippin' fantastic, I thought. We shared the beef short rib dish, which was truly outstanding. We were all stunned at how good it was. Also the eggplant and burrata apps: dope.

I wanted to go to State Bird Provisions but it was all booked up. I had some fine dim sum at Palette Tea House. Also dined at Zuni Cafe, which is still great after all these years.

I thought the dim sum at Palette Tea House was quite good, but paled in comparison to Hong Kong Lounge II (RIP). [cry.gif]

I heard that SF restaurants will be allowed to be open for indoor dining up to 25% as of Wednesday. But it doesn't seem like any of my favorites are taking reservations.

If a favorite of yours is open for indoor dining and taking reservations (for the first week in April), please post it. I'm afraid given the capacity restrictions and pent up desire, places will book up quickly once they take reservations.

Yes, as of Wed, March 3. There are still some significant restrictions on indoor dining, however, fewer on outdoor dining (see link below). It takes a while for a restaurant to organize reopening, so not surprised that it appears to be a slow startup. Also, restaurant workers are starting to get vaccinated (although that process takes a while).

Some restaurants have decent outdoors spaces, also appears that some are starting out reopening the outdoors only. Not sure how it will evolve (obviously, to some degree depends on what happens with local infection rates).

Most SF food workers received their fist dose of vaccine last week. I will be getting mine in 3 days. As more of the general population is vaccinated I believe we will see indoor dining at 50 percent by beginning of May.

Boulevard told me they won't open while indoors is 25%.

Three days in San Francisco and of course I hit State Bird and their new spot The Anchovy Bar every day!

The Anchovy Bar is outstanding in every way.



And State Bird is as great as always with many new dishes. The first dish was brought over by Chef Stuart from The Anchovy Bar.

State Bird just crushes. If you were going to dine in, one meal each day for a month it’s simply the best day-in, day-out restaurant on the west coast.
