Just got back from the weekend in New Orleans. Hit a bunch of places but didnt have really deep meals at any place. Galatoires for lunch on Saturday was good (Turtle Soup and Duck Crepe which was excellent), Peche for early dinner Saturday - oysters and their crab cappelini which was very tasty, Cochon Butcher later Saturday night was a very good sandwich. Willa Jean for breakfast sunday was good. August for dinner Sunday - very cool place and the grouper was very good. Compere lapin for drinks and appetizers later was very good - conch croquettes. Shaya was probably my favorite meal for lunch Monday and like someone said at the beginning of this thread the pita bread was super good. I had the Lamb Kofte as well which was outstanding.

Dinner at Gautreau's this weekend was great. One of my favorite restaurants in NO. No drop off in quality with new chef. Highly recommend this place

Black Bean and Crab gumbo one of the best things I ate all last year. Noodles were also excellent. Lunch was spot on. Put it on the list.
Kenton's- wasn't wowed by the bourbon list but could be like Gramercy Tavern in New Orleans. Smart and perfectly done dishes with a focus on meat.
Going back in March... Cheers

Time to bump this thread up again. Heading to New Orleans again in late March for our anniversary
. Always looking for comments from our esteemed board! I am planning on bringing a few special bottles this year as last year was the first time that we did not bring any.
Cheers!

Had an enjoyable meal at the Sylvain bar a couple weeks ago. Really cool spot in the French Quarter. Cozy and full of character, with great cocktails and highly enjoyable food. Comfortable but reasonably refined.

Bumping this back up for any additional comments. Just found out that my brother and SIL will be joining us in town and my SIL has plans for decimating the oyster population in the gulf!

Just returned last week. Arrived the day AFTER Mardi Gras. In order of preference:
1) Meril: I know. I was skeptical but after a lunch I made a res for dinner. Not very New Orleans but delicious. Great energy. Very noisy. Chef was in the house. Nice bourbon list.
2) Compere Lapin: recommended by the Somm at Meril. Would go back in a heartbeat.
3) Parkway Bakery: OMG! Get the Surf and Turf poboy.
4) August: always predictably excellent. Corkage is now $30. I visited Marc Pelletier at Martin Wine for some white burg.
5) Central Grocery: nothing like a muffuletta while sitting in Jackson Square Park.
6) Pizza Domenica: good Neapolitan style.
7) Cochon: worth checking out.
8) Revolution: brunch. Meh..don’t bother.
Went to Cafe Du Monde a couple of times. I remember a time there were no 1/2 block long lines. Still worth waiting for.
Stayed at the Windsor Court. Fantastic. Great music on the weekend. Fantastic bourbon list (even Pappy 23 and all the 2017 BTAC releases). Wonderful staff. Beautiful rooms.

Two more things:
The Pizza Domenica I went to was the one in Uptown.
People have recommended Willie Maes for fried chicken: when I was there 4 years ago it was the worst meal I ever had in NOLA: everything was bad.

If only you weren't a vegetarian and liked extended dry aged beef, I would suggest Doris Metropolitan. (it's also a lot more than beef)Bill Tex Landreth wrote:I’ll be there solo on Thursday. What is the single can’t miss place I can get into short notice?
But, probably depends on whether prefer more classic leaning New Orleans cuisine or just high end food. I only get down there a couple times a year, so I'll let the bigger experts speak.
We've had some outstanding meals at Peche also. Both lunch and dinner.

Thanks, guys. I will look at all of these when I get back to the hotel tonight. My only concern is that I am staying in Baton Rouge and don't want to be commuting back after having too much consumption.

I’m not sure I would... Shaya was great. But months ago lost its namesake Alon Shaya in a bitter dispute, and he poached the person named executive chef, who was supposed to replace him, as well.RyanC wrote:If you want something distinctly NOLA and are a solo diner, I'd consider Compere Lapin, Cochon, Sylvain, or August --- or even Commander's palace.Chris S p i k e s wrote:If only you weren't a vegetarian and liked extended dry aged beef, I would suggest Doris Metropolitan. Thanks! We still have a free night or two and I am seriously considering Gabrielle. As far as Shaya (according to Eater), his new restaurant will be on the site of Kenton's which will close very soon.

Highlights from 2 recent trips
Lunch at Maypop. Love this place. Cool weather has arrived so the black bean and crab gumbo should be on the menu. Fantastic
Gabrielle- love it, back to being the classic it was before Katrina.
Carrollton Market- worthy of being on the top 10 restaurant list. Nothing like seeing the owner chef either working the grill/saute station or doing expo over every dish leaving the kitchen. Terrific place.
Bywater Cafe- Nina Compton's new place. Excellent, casual with cool vibe. Go with a group and try a bunch of dishes
La Petit Grocery- very solid
Seaworthy- best Happy hour in town. Some of the best oysters in town and great cocktails. Make a reservation though. Small place and not easy to get a seat.
Commanders- was a little disappointed in our lunch. It was fine but no dish really stood out. They are a machine though on Friday lunch. The food and booze getting made is something to see.
Mr B's- solid brunch. Not the best in town but great to see one of our favorites still doing well.
Lastly, in the qtr and looking for a good local place for chargrilled Oysters and po'boys. Mr Ed's a Metairie staple has opened a location. Good solid local seafood.

When I lived in New Orleans I used to love Moscas. A fifteen minute drive, a bit of a hole in the wall, and rumored to be partially owned by the Mafia, the food was insanely good, and the BBQ shrimp was far and away the best I tasted when I was down there, and I tried many, many restaurants.

Just back from a trip to New Orleans. Peche and Saba were outstanding.
August was very good. Meauxbar was a good neighborhood spot, great cocktails.
On a side note, the World War II museum was well worth a visit. I could have spent two days there. My 10 and 13 year old sons were pretty engaged.

For those who love the food at Shaya, Alon’s new place, Saba, doesn’t disappoint. It’s my favorite restaurant in NOLA.
Alon Shaya also released a cookbook, and it is a great read along with all of his signature dishes, which are very faithful to the restaurant version and easily doable at home. His hummus, lamb kofta, and pita recipes are on my regular rotation. His Pita/Pizza Dough is now my standard. I have the Ottolenghi books too, but I prefer Shaya. His wife’s Red Bean & Rice recipe is killer, too.

Wow! Blast from the past...Mark Golodetz wrote: ↑November 20th, 2018, 3:40 pm When I lived in New Orleans I used to love Moscas. A fifteen minute drive, a bit of a hole in the wall, and rumored to be partially owned by the Mafia, the food was insanely good, and the BBQ shrimp was far and away the best I tasted when I was down there, and I tried many, many restaurants.

That place was legendary when I was I high school (Shaw) in the 80's. My dad, loved that place and introduced me to it. I have a several BBQ shrimp recipes from those folks that I like to make but there is only one "Shrimp Mosca". Nothing even resembling fine dining but the shrimp were always worth it.

Re: Recent New Orleans Eats
I will be there next week (4/10-12) and have dinner reservations at Saba. Will report back. My daughter goes to Tulane and Saba is now her favorite (used to be Shaya).

The pix on yelp look pretty delish, and maybe a nice break from the rest of the weeks meals.Sherri S h a p i r o wrote: ↑April 6th, 2019, 4:55 amI will be there next week (4/10-12) and have dinner reservations at Saba. Never made it to the wine list, though, as I loved their liquor options.
Tulane is on my son’s short list (and in the lead) for next year, Sheri. I may need to pick your brain further if that’s OK

Has anybody ever been to Bon Ton Cafe. I never have but the classic old school menu always intrigued me, and I wonder if I should try it one day this coming trip?
