Stymie was a famous racehorse in mid-twentieth century American history. Stymie was known for never giving up the lead when he gained it. He notorious for this in fact that the horse callers brought the word back into the English vernacular by calling out “They’ve been stymied again!!” whenever he pulled ahead. In 1950 Jed’s father, a newspaperman, wagered a bet on Stymie that paid off well. So well, in fact, that the winnings financed the Steele family’s move from New York City to San Francisco. As a tribute to the horse and to Jed’s father, our Stymie label is reserved for rare, small production wines of the highest quality we produce.
The grapes used to craft the Steele Stymie Syrah are sourced from Jacobsen vineyard on Jed’s home property in Kelseyville. Jed planted this small vineyard in 2002. It is made up of 6 acres of Syrah and 1 acre of Counoise. The Stymie Merlot is sourced from our estate Silva vineyard also in Kelseyville. Jed purchased this vineyard in 2005 after having sourced fruit from it since 1991. Known for quality fruit, it is located on a gravelly bench overlooking the Big Valley area of Lake County. An ideal location for growing Merlot vines.

We aged this wine in American and French oak barrels for 22 months and use gentle handling throughout the winemaking process to insure the highest quality wines.

Cellar Selection

This wine towers over the competition, and not only because the bottle is an inch and a half taller than most. Its aroma is exotic and compelling, like singed rosemary branches (in a good way). The flavors bring clove, blackberry, ripe blueberry and dried-cherry notes. The texture is buoyed by fine tannins and firm acidity for a feeling of agility and strength. It should be prime to drink after 2018.

Oak and spice components fill the aroma. The flavors are rich and concentrated, making this a big yet seductive wine. Layered and complex, this full-bodied wine is well supported by fine, velvety tannins.
