PLEASE VOTE: Keep BerserkerDay on the 27th...or a weekend day near it

Often the most expensive day for a Wine Berserker, whereby the deals from wineries and retailers fill the forum and make your credit cards scream for mercy...

When should BerserkerDay V be held?

PLEASE VOTE: Keep BerserkerDay on the 27th...or a weekend day near it

#1 Post by Todd F r e n c h » January 28th, 2013, 8:06 am

Folks,

Now that BerserkerDay is fresh in our minds, and we've had our first BerserkerDay on a weekend, it's time to weigh the pluses and minuses of each, and decide which is your preference. I'm partial to a weekday because it's fun to see the scrambling and complaining of those who are caught at work, plus they are shielded from their significant other's watchful eyes when it comes to spending. However, I sit at my computer at home either way, so it's not fair for me to choose for everybody, so I'm letting YOU decide!

Feel free to sway decisions with discussion in this thread as well, and I'll make the votes changeable, in case you find yourself swayed by one argument and want to switch.

Weekends are noticeably harder for me, as I'm not the kind to carry a computing device everywhere I go. At work, I can take 2-3 minutes once an hour to give a quick check-in.

I am a traditionalist, so I like to hold to the actual date.

Weekdays are considerably harder for me, as my employer's internet filter blocks out most wineries' websites. Having it on a Sunday was perfect, I thought.

Actual date for me. I prefer the weekdays, and I think the people offering the deals may prefer that as well as some were busy pouring their wines on the weekend.

I really dig the actual date because it is easier for folks to remember. But I understand the sentiment about the weekends, and I do believe more folks took part yesterday because of that.

Perhaps some aspects of it can be on that day - auctions, some special offers, and others can be extended to a weekend?!?!?

How about the Monday nearest to the actual date, so we can take a 3-day weekend?

The actual date would probably be better for me, since I'll spend a lot less.

I would stay on the actual date , especially since it will eventually be a national holiday.

I'd like to see an option for "A WEEKDAY near Jan. 27th", I, like Adam, have better access during the week, usually. (This year worked for me, but it doesn't always work well on the weekend.)

The actual date because of its significance. It was impossible for me yesterday or any weekend for the most part, but I saw some offers that are extended beyond the 27th. Now I just need to find them to see if I'm interested.

It may be a bit early to determine this, but was the traffic higher yesterday? The BerserkerDay offlines seemed like a fun idea for those that went, and may have provided a venue for folks to share more lots among folks in the group. If that was the case then Sundays would make a lot of sense. It also seems a lot easier to block the lots closer together without worry about east Coast/West Coast bias. And with either set-up, maybe there can be a way where donors can inquire through a PM about when a specific offer is going live. As long as it doesn't become overly cherry-picking in nature, that can help those that may have issues with one setup or the other stay involved without loosing the thrill of refreshing every 5 minutes to see what new offers have posted.

Just an opinion from the cheap-ass seats....

As I posted in the 'final thoughts' thread, the traffic to the site was down yesterday when compared to last year, when it was on a weekday. For that reason alone, I'm certainly pushing for weekday!

Weekday is easier b/c most people 'work', so most people can find some time during work to check the site, make purchases etc.. even if during lunch hour..

Weekend means people are on the road, out with family, doing 'stuff'..

I just think it should stay on the day of the 27th.. regardless which day of the week..

Maybe it was the sense of urgency involved with having BD on a weekday that did this, but it seemed that the "frenzy" aspect was lessened this year over last. As a result, the entertainment quotient was reduced -- for me -- when reading the threads. Add in the fact that, as Berserker #2 I have a great affection for January 27, I voted for keeping it on the 27th.

Agreed - because of the frenzy created while people are crazy missing stuff out at work, then desperately wanting to drink when they get home, I think weekdays are meant for BerserkerDay!

Overall, but I agree that the traffic seemed sustained. Could be that the placement of the code for the analytics is different, though. For some reason, that Google code gets messed up a lot.

Only having to remember the same day every year is certainly easier, whether it falls on a weekend or weekday. Since I am a newbie, do you always send the list and offers out a day early to donors? If not, could that have brought traffic down? If so, if I donate today, am I good through next year's BeserkerDay? newhere

I always thought web traffic was higher M-F, so BerserkerDay on a weekend, especially a Sunday, might be tough. But if the numbers say otherwise, that's interesting. I vote to keep it on the 27th. I could be persuaded to change my mind if the weekend clearly has more traffic.

I agree with the gentleman from West Haverstraw. I understand the sentimentality of the actual anniversary and the enjoyable frenzied aspect, but I too spent more money with it being on the weekend & my employer has internet restrictions at work that made participation there more difficult last year. Whatever the decision, I am definitely a fan of the donor preview that was provided this year & I'm sure that also contributed to my increased spending; thanks as well to the wineries that opened up their websites the night before!

With all due respect, the Sunday between Championship games and Superbowl is a no-brainer. People will definitely schedule more BD parties on that day. Are you guys kidding me with getting in trouble from a spouse!!?? Give her some wine to drink that day and she'll be happy and quiet. What is more dangerous to Berserker Day.....an overzealous spouse or an employer that fires you because you are spending all day trying to buy wine at work? Look at it this way- if you lose your job then there is no $$ to even buy wine.
Thanks to all for putting this together. There was something out there for everyone. It was loads of fun.

Keeping it on a Sunday will pretty much ensure that I remain a donor (not that I'm considering otherwise). Honestly, if I hadn't had the early preview, I'm not sure that I would have bought anything. As it was, my purchases were made around 2am EST, thanks to those who had their websites open. I tried to check in periodically on Sunday when my kids were occupied, but didn't feel the same sense of participation that I had last year. It was just stressful trying to juggle this and kids/wife/activities/etc, and I got yelled at every time I checked my phone/laptop. For us, the spending wasn't an issue since I'd budgeted a set amount. It was the intrusion into family time that really got the wife upset. Our agreement now is that if BD is on a weekend, I have to make all purchases before the kids wake up (about 7am EST) then shut off the computer for the rest of the day.

We're almost at a perfect tie - hopefully we'll get more votes, as I know we had far more participants in BerserkerDay than votes cast!
Apparently I'm lazy, have a narrow agenda, and offer little in the way of content and substance (RMP) (and have a "penchant for gossip" -KBI)

I feel that having the list the day before really levels the playing field. Those that have internet restrictions at work can certainly get up a little earlier to place their orders. Honestly, it was easier for me to make purchases at work last year than have my husband wondering why I was on the computer all day, and gripping about the credit card bills. Besides, having it on the 27th for me is a no brainer, since that is my wedding anniversary.

I am fine either way. My issue is the time of year. My wife's birthday is just a few days earlier, and this one is her 40th, so all "my" BD budget went to "her" BD. Maybe next year I can squeeze a purchase or two in. I avoided this whole sub-forum like the plague Sunday...because I know I lack will power.

But i am not asking it to be changed...someone will always have a conflict no matter when it happens.

But when would it be in a leap year?

And on the Hebrew calendar this year it was the 16th of Shevat. Next year it would be the 26th of Shevat....and I have a standing appointment on the 26th of Shevat. So, you won't be able to please everyone:)

The last Sunday in January works best for me. I have fewer responsibilities on Sunday and can hang around on this site all day.

My vote is for keeping it on January 27. That day has meaning; picking a Sunday, even if it's the same time of year, is just a Sunday.

I actually had to work on BD this year so I wasn't able to determine if there was any real difference for me, but I doubt there would be (no kids, very understanding wife who enjoys what I buy). Those that might lose out because of restrictions at work, though, are probably balanced out by those that have family or other obligations on a Sunday. You'll never be able to please everybody.

Like others, I noticed a lack of the frenzy aspect from last year, but I don't know that it resulted from advance notice to donors or it being a Sunday as much as there being fewer offers that were very limited or suggested time is of the essence. There seemed to be plenty of frenzy around Nicora, for example.
