Found this video clip on YouTube - good lesson on why not to seal up a steel drum of fermenting wine with a clamp, gasket, and solid cap. Lucky for the guy who prodded the clamp loose that it shot out the opposite direction from him - could have done some damage!

Wow! Did the fermentation push out the bottom of the barrel or do they come that way? If so how did the bung not blow out before deforming the barrel?

Yes, the pressure was blowing up the drum like a balloon. The mistake was that they didn’t use a fermentation bung, but rather a top attached with a tri-clover clamp. It was not the weak link in the system.

They were lucky. Pressure kills.

They were very lucky. I’m surprised the guy popping off the to top was not wearing a little more protection. The ss barrels hold more volume than the typical wooden barrels but they are not mean’t to hold pressure.
