NY Theater Dist. Reco for 5 adults+5 Teens

#1 Post by Brian Lynch » December 23rd, 2010, 2:10 pm

Looking for recommendations on good, fair priced food (for NY) for group of 5 adults + 5 teens. Nothing elaborate. Looking for a modicum of economy since I'll eat the bill. [wow.gif]

Couple of posts around on the topic already, but I'll say Landmarc in Columbus Circle for variety and ambiance. One of the Szechuan (Grand or Gourmet) is in the Theatre District.

I'm always perplexed by the amount of Landmarc recos on this board. It has to be one of the most mediocre places in the city....

Guessing the reason it's suggested with such frequency is due to it being one of the few places in town that is 1) centric, 2) quite varied in its menu offerings, 3) relatively affordable, 4) able to offer a more than decent wine list & 5) not a freaking tourist trap.

Is it a transcendental meal? Save for a few highlights, probably not. Now, if you're able to offer up a better solution, by all means, feel free to do so.

I recently ate at Haru Sushi, a chain of Japanese restaurants. The one near the theater district is on 43rd off Broadway. A lively place with something for everyone. Not cheap but fairly priced for the area. (Hey, they sell M&Ms for like $50 so what do you expect?). You won't get the "wow" factor on the food but should not be disappointed.
Although I have not been in a while, I also like Molyvos, a Greek restaurant on 7th and 56th. I think that is a fun place for a group.
Let us know what you decide.

If you head over more into Hell's Kitchen and away from Times Square there are a number of decent, relatively affordable places, especially italian ones. The stretch of 9th ave in the 40s has several. Cara Mia (9th and 45th) is solid, as is Gallo Nero (44th between 9th and 10th). None of them are mindblowing, but most of the entrees will be under $20, the atmosphere will be casual, and everyone will be able to find something they like, which is not always easy with teenagers.

Two choices for you to consider

1. Family style Italian food

Carmine's
200 West 44th Street
New York, NY 10036
(212) 221-3800
http://www.carminesnyc.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

2. A little more upscale Italian food but not over the top.

Patsy's NYC
http://www.patsys.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
236 West 56th Street
New York
(212) 247-3491

We usually eat at Patsy's. Old style, Frank Sinatra Italian food.

I would second the Carmine's or Patsy's for a large group, including teens. Go family style.

i work in the area and my go-to is Marseille. solid across the board, good list, good vibe and varied enough menu that anyone can find something they like.

i wouldn't send my worst enemy to Carmine's - a mockery of Italian food, even for the style.

Nizza, just up the street from Marseille (same owners?), is a little cheaper and also good.

Quite a few fans of Carmine's here, but I also think that the OP can do much better in NYC Theater District.

Whenever we have visiting friends doing the theaters, we always point them to:

Trattoria Trecolori

Marseille

I always stay near there when I'm in NYC, and I'm surprised I didn't know about Marseille. I love the menu.

I'm always looking for a good place to take some family to, who enjoy a nice meal but aren't real foodies. This may be my next place for that meal.

What's the BYO policy there?

Wow, a blast from the past. I remember the excitement when they first opened. Do they still do the unlimited pasta menu?
Ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw.

Why? I've taken teens there with no issues and they loved it.
