I've tried the single barrel and small batch from Bowman Brothers and didn't think the single barrel was worth almost twice the cost of the small batch but YMMV.

I'm just gonna buy 100 handles of Maker's because they'll prob be $300 each soon (plus it's delicious).

It would appear that Heaven Hill’s Henry McKenna 10 yr won best bourbon at this year’s San Francisco spirits competition. While I am not sure if this will affect its price in any measure, I do think that it will likely affect its availability ...

The local Total Wine has Henry McKenna 10 for $31.99 and i grabbed a bottle and went back for three more.
Only a tiny bit of heat when neat in a shaped whiskey glass. Couple drops of water and it is very nice.
Lot of spice to go with vanilla/carmel/brown sugar
100 proof. 75% corn, 13% rye and 12% malted barley

Henry McKenna 10yr can be great, and a great QPR -- somewhat unfortunate to see that it won the prize as it'll just make it harder to find. I think the main draw before was when you had retailer-selected good single barrel selections. I still have one that Sku recommended, barrel 1447, from Everson Royce:

http://recenteats.blogspot.com/2014/10/ ... royce.html

K&L sometimes has their own single barrel selections, as well.

New release coming from Bob Dylan and the team that did Angel's Envy before selling it to Bacardi.....Heaven's Door. Look forward to trying.

11 year old, Old Fitzgerald will be out soon in a decanter. Super excited to try this too.

Good start to year for new Bourbon in market.

Really trying to find a bottle of McKenna 10. It’s funny. It was months without seeing Elijah Craig Small batch, Noah’s mill and rowans creek being stocked regularly, but now these 3 are all over. Just no Mckenna. I can order Mckenna through the Crown site but paying $10 shipping for a single bottle makes me want to find it in person first

Ugh, local Costco-attached liquor store (in NY state can’t sell wine/liquor in a “grocery” store) had a few bottles of Weller Special Reserve, the 90° base bottle. Store manager says “well, we have it on special at $39.99 but it’s gonna go up! How many do you want?”

Anyone know what availability will be like on Heavens door? Tempted to buy a bottle on their site but $15 shipping is rough if there will be plenty to go around. Intrigued by the bourbon over the other 2

make sure its the single barrel or in my experience you'll be kinda disappointed. I see it show up at Total sometimes.

Personally, I think McKenna 10 is a decent pour at its price point. it doesn't compete with things worth $10 more though, and I don't think its worth the increased prices that some stores have been charging lately. we use it as our standard mixer at our house, but id much rather have something like Eagle Rare if I'm drinking it neat.

McKenna is a single barrel so you mileage can vary since barrel to barrel the juice is different. The one that was in the competition could have just been a really great single barrel but who knows if they tried one from a different barrel if the results would have been the same.

Good day at total wine. Grabbed a bottle of Smooth Ambler Big level and McKenna 10. The SA was $55 but they only got 6 bottles and now they have 2 :)

I know there are mixed reviews on McKenna but for $30, and never being able to find it, I grabbed one

We were in KY last year and tried the Orphan Barrel Rhetoric 23 yr. We liked it enough to source a bottle. I just received a bottle of the 24yr, and and equally happy with it.

Some air time really smooths it out. naturally you need to like some oak flavors, anything this old has the oak.

I found this article interesting:

Behind the misleading claims fueling America's bourbon boom
Drawn to the "small batch" or "hand-crafted" bourbon at your liquor store?
Turns out, those phrases might not mean much.

Well, if anyone was putting importance on the term "hand-crafted", you are naive. That's as obvious as buying food that says "natural". Small batch never meant that much to me personally, the only 2 terms I've ever put any weight on are the age statement, and the term single barrel. Then again, even the terms single barrel can be misleading, it doesn't have to mean "one of the best barrels we had", though I think most people feel that way.

This I did find intersting, fairly shady:

Templeton Rye, for instance, settled a class-action lawsuit in 2015 for $2.5 million, agreeing to “now feature the words ‘Distilled in Indiana’ on the back and remove the words ‘Small Batch’ and ‘Prohibition Era Recipe’ from the front” after consumers sued for “deceptive marketing.”

Any sightings of Heavens door in the wild yet?

Also, opened my bottle of SA Big level. It’s just ok. Quite a different flavor profile than I’m used to though so will track it over the summer to see if I enjoy it anymore.

Found a lonely bottle of ER at my local Walgreens. Already have 2 bottles but tough for me to pass up ER for $29.99

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a Bourbon warehouse in Bardstown collapsed today.

I tried to post a picture, but the site here won't let me post anything taller than 1024 pixels (all of the pictures of this tragedy are BIG!)

It was at the Barton 1792 distillery.

A more detailed report, with a good drone video, is here:

To give y'all and idea of how crappy Seattle is for liquor purchases, I saw McKenna 10 at Costco today. With tax is was $48! It was Costco, by the way, that was responsible for privatizing liquor sales which drove the prices up 40%. Thanks guys!

Your comment got me curious about the state liquor tax in Washington - I went to https://taxfoundation.org/states-spirits-taxes-2017/ and it is pretty shocking - Washington has the highest spirits tax in the country, ringing in at $31.48 dollars per gallon!? For reference, Georgia where I live is $3.79 per gallon! The median is around $5.69. (Happy 4th of July!)

Alan - it’s a limited release similar to the RR1998 that came out a few years ago. I think retail is around $300-350. If you don’t buy it for yourself, I’d gladly take it at that price.

Ran into a stash of Weller (not the 12yr) at Tahoe vacation the other day, they had no price but figured what the heck I’ll give it a go. Rang up at 69.99 and quickly put that bottle back on the shelf :)
THe did have like 6 cases of BCBS stout at retail which seemed like a lot as it was a tough buy here still.

Over the weekend, I took a bottle of Bib & Tucker and enjoyed some with friends around a campfire while camping. It was pretty good, but it was hot as hell out and the ice in the cooler wasn't "clean" enough to drop into the whisky. Has anyone had this?
