What gin for French 75s?

#1 Post by Brandon R » December 10th, 2018, 11:34 am

Hi, All. I hadn't really had many of them, but recently had a great French 75. I want to make them for a Christmas gathering. What widely-available gin would you use for this particular cocktail?

i think it depends on which champagne or other sparkler you're using. but plymouth is widely available, very smooth and rounded (more on the elegant side) and lower abv which would work with this i think.

Thanks, Yaacov. I'm not going with anything expensive because, well, I'll be mixing it with gin and lemon juice. That said, I'll likely do a dry Brut of some sort. Domaine Ste. Michelle does a nice job and is cheap.

I’d say it’s the third most important ingredient...

I use Plymouth for my gin based cocktails (including the French 75). Really loved the drinks at Little Branch in New York and that’s primarily what they use, hence why I use it now when making cocktails at home.

I know you didn’t ask, but another delicious champagne based cocktail to maybe do in addition to a French 75 is an Airmail (Rum, Lime, Honey & Champagne).

I’d think any quality London dry style would be best. I wouldn’t spend too much extra for the gin, but splurge a bit on the bubbly. I’ve been using Brokers quite a bit lately when I want a classic straightforward gin drink. Great stuff at less than $20.

as has been noted, Plymouth is pretty spot on for cocktail gins. I would also add in Ford's as I have always liked the result
