Vermouth - How To Store?

#1 Post by Daniel Mattisson » May 15th, 2018, 2:19 pm

I drink a martini every now and then, but often find myself with a bottle of vermouth that's a month (or 4) old. Anyone have any suggestions for how to keep it fresh? I hate opening a bottle to make a couple martini's and then pouring the rest down the drain a month later. From my understanding they deteriorate after a week or so?

Two pieces of advice:

1) buy a smaller bottle (many brands come in 375ml)
2) refrigerate

That's all I got.

A week might be an exaggeration. As Corey wrote, refrigerate and you should be good for at least a month or so. I doubt you can even taste a significant deterioration at a month and a half.

Some people pay good money for old ‘rancio’ vermouth.

I don’t worry about a month in the fridge.

Two more nuggets of wisdom:

3) use excess for cooking
4) invite a few “martini” friends over to drink it up

How do you accomplish that with a screw top (the most common closure for Vermouths)?

I am glad someone posted this question. I have wondered about the lifespan of an opened bottle of vermouth.

I can't tell you (from my retail days) how many dust-covered bottles of vermouth I saw in customers' bars that must have been purchased in 1989.
