We hit a new record today 286 calls today as the product was released in IL recently. What kills me is the callers that say "do yo have Pappy Van Winkle?" then when told no just hang up or the ones that then want to do a forensic review of the distribution of the product.

Wish someone would give me a call offering

I don't understand these. I remember having this at a tasting about 5 years ago where they were giving free samples trying to move product. Same thing with Eagle Rare 17 and George Stagg. I went to a liquor store asking about the Eagle Rare 17 last week and was bluntly told that everyone in Minneapolis wants a bottle of this and go away. Quite frankly, they're not THAT good. I mean, they're good, but I think some of these people need to discover some good scotch or something.... Too much focus on a few small release products.

Way to rally We have 78 call logged today and i have to go so we will have to see how that number goes from here to 10pm. Not one call from a customer that has ever bought anything from us other than Pappy back in 2001-2007. Mostly from people that have no idea even where we are located.

We get this a lot too. Always from customers that have never even been to my store. My rule, If I don't know you and you are not a regular customer "We don't have any", sorry", otherwise lets talk. I'm tired of cherry pickers. I understand, but just tired of them. Not that I have ever done this, well at least for bourbons. Wine, well .......... [whistle.gif]

All right, let's whip out the rulers.

Seriously, though, we do get Pappy, but we don't sell it to random people who call on the phone asking for it. Plus, a lot of the calls we receive are nowhere near the release, when we really don't have any left.

A guy walked in today for the very first time, reeking of cheap cologne.

Guy: *heavy Scottish accent* Hey, I'd like to buy two cases of Van Winkle 12 year."
Me: *blank stare*
Guy: "A store this big, you've got it, right? It came out this week. I won a bottle in another store's raffle and I want some more."
Me: "We do not. However, we do have a waiting list."
Guy: "Waiting list? No way... *pause* How long is it?"
Me: "Ten years, give or take a few months."
Guy: "You're kidding."
Me: "Nope. I can add you, but you have to give me a phone number that will work in a decade."
Guy: "eff you, man." *leaves*

I laughed for a good five minutes.

I do most of my daily grocery shopping at Sonoma Market in Sonoma, and the weekly 'cycle of Pliny' is amazingly predictable:
Monday-Tuesday: Fresh case of Pliny comes in and is stocked in the beer fridge.
Tuesday-Friday Morning: a few bottles disappear here and there, purchased by locals.
Noon Friday: First tourist lunch rush - 90%-100% of the bottles disappear.
Saturday-Sunday: I've overheard several calls asking if they have any Pliny - which is always gone by that point.
Sunday Night - Monday: Tourists leave, the cycle starts all over again...

What's wrong with someone enquiring about a product? Why do you assume everyone has the inside scoop? What's wrong with tourists buying Pliny?

Where exactly did I say it was 'wrong'? I find predictability of a tourist population to be quite amusing - especially when it happens like clockwork with no direct 'guide' making it happen...

There are 2-3 places in town where you can get PtE on tap, so the bottles aren't quite as sought after... I'll grab one on occasion with a sandwich when I'm on my own for dinner.

I live in Bourbon country, and don't like the stuff; my reaction to the PvW craze is about the same as yours. Now the feeding frenzy extends down the chain to W. L. Weller 12-year-old, which (my bourbon-drinking acquaintances tell me) is essentially the same thing as a 12-year-old PvW...but it's something like $23. Sort of a second-label PvW....but now just as hard to find. A friend in Virginia asked me to pick some up for him, and, despite a valiant effort, I couldn't. I wonder what's next.

Well(er) said, Edward. You are spot on. Find what bourbon your like to drink, and move on. I actually got a head's up on the Weller 12 from Phillip Franks, and bought 2 bottles at $30 / piece. I plan on drinking both of them, just like I do with every other $20 - $30 bottle of good bourbon I like to drink. F'k you Flippers. You won't have a seat at my drinking table.

Scotch has been escalating in price for several years, mostly because of the Chinese. But you don't see these lemming problems.

I bought a few great bottles from Larry a few years ago. Great to do business with, but his secret is out. I remember he had one of the Old Rip 23 decanter sets in stock for $5-600? and I thought that was crazy pants. A friend just sold his for $4,200 earlier in the month. Damn.

Speaking to Larry -- you still got that Bourye listed on your site?

We still get calls about the decanter set. I thought that was going to be a bust when they pitched it to me! A $100 up charge for a box and glasses made in china! we sold 54 sets. My opening order was for 9 as a jesture of good will since at that time we were getting 35 to 40 3 packs opf all flavors of pappy. I thought I would have them for the rest of my life. Resently, I had 2 guys tell me they have sold their for over 4K as well. so look at who the dummy is me I could be running auction from my hammock in the islands. I have a bottle maybe 2 of Bourye in house. Happy holidays all!

You can't blame people for trying. Every once in a while you read a story on this very here internetz forum about someone stumbling into a random store and finding a gem. Therefore I try when I travel. In boston recently I found a case with a bottle of Old Rip and GTS- Tried to buy them, but found out they were being raffled in a lottery..

Happened to me, sort of. My favorite whiskey was Sazerac 18, which used to be $50 or so. Sigh.

54 in one morning? I'd be setting up an automated answering system with a recording saying store hours, no we don't have any Pappy to sell you, and if you still want to talk to someone, please press 1. It gets pretty bad for us too, but not that bad. Maybe I shouldn't speak too soon; each year has been worse than the previous year.

Costco really screwed up the local market for PVW. They pushed through a ballot initiative that privatized the liquor store system in the state and just when I had the distribution system cracked. With the state run stores it was a simple matter of first come first serve when shipments came in. These days you have to butter up the right palms.

It's about to jump up now that there is another release.
I zone out. Bourbon is gross.

Trying to convince my boss to get a case for the office from Sazerac as we work with them already. I'm a Scotch drinker, but I'm eager to try the PvW.

Never tried that stuff but a colleague from California just told me he bought a 23 year old for a 1000 USD. Thats gross, I can get a Macallan 18 from 1967 (my birth year) for that money...would be curious to try a sip though.

By the way, Scotch collecting is all the rage in Switzerland now. Macallan is the prime suspect. The now discontinued 18 yr bottles from 1996 and 1997 are nowhere to be found... Even the simple 12 yr Sherry Cask is getting very expensive ( I mean, relatively) after they apparently discontinued that line in Europe. I heard it is still sold in the US. But, Bourbon is just a no go for an respectable collector neener

Cheers
