Rivers Marie Panek

Had my first RM Panek Vineyard tonight. I am a TRB fan but first RM cab. Really, really enjoyed this wine. What a great bottle ('09). Can someone tell me more about the RM Corona Cab? Have not had the pleasure of tasting this one but very interested in hearing more about this one. Thanks and I will be adding more RM Panek to my rotation.

I’ve had both the RM Cab Panek '09 and RM Cab Corona '09… both excellent wines. I actually slightly preferred the Corona as I thought it had a bit more complexity to it. When the RM Cab '12 wines are offered, I’ll be loading up the truck [cheers.gif]

I have some of both, but have been sitting on them thinking some time in the bottle would be best.

Anyone care to chime in? Do the RM cabs need some age before opening? Or are the '08, '09 and '10 ready to drink now?

The '09s are becoming ready IMO and can be really great with a proper decant. I had the '09 Panek in July’13 and was fairly closed even after an hour… so I vacu vin’ed it and saved half of it for the next day when it was really singing. Last month, '09 Corona took about 2 hours with just the cork popped to open up, but could have used more. Either way, you can drink at least the '09s now with some air or save them for 10+ years… just depends on your preference.

I’d hold the 2009 RM SVDs. The depth and class of the fruit will allow for a window of magic now, if you are drinking alone you’ll hit it and enjoy it for sure; I hit the Corona in a great place but the Panek was off and on and served to others on the off end. Now I have but a singleton of each. Holding 5 years and decanting 1 hour with beef tenderloin is the way to go, we’ll see if I make it that long.

No mystery how big a fanboy I am about the RM Panek. These are best with 12-18 hour slow-ox. We had the 2011 for Christmas eve dinner and it showed wonderfully. The 2009 is spectacular.
I maintain that it is ‘nearly’ as good as Schrader at less than half the price. Figure in shipping and it’s 39% of the Schrader’s cost. I have not enjoyed the Corona quite as much, but it is quite good. The Slow-ox is mandatory to get the best deeply layered character from this.

If you do this, would the wine really be Pobega’d (in common usage) or really “Pobega’d*”? Need a ruling here [cheers.gif]

I believe it would have to be a P’n’P (Popped and Pobega’d)

The moment the cork is extracted, all pobega-ing both implicit and implied commences, regardless of any re-insertion*.

On advice from my attorney, the small print.

What is interesting to me is I usually find the regular RM cabs a bit too ripe for my tastes, so go figure.

I would agree that earlier vintages of the regular RM show ripe fruit but not the 2011. For me, after a P n P, the RM 2011 shows a nice herbal (fresh basil) component.

Really enjoyed a bottle of the reg 2011 cab the other day after feeling it was a bit meh when my first bottle was Pobega’d following delivery. First bottle was a little thin and green but the second appeared to have already put on a noticeable amount of weight and the distracting green was more of what I would also call a nice herbal note. And the wife loved it, which is always a big plus. Makes it easier on me come release time.

Good to hear about the '11 Panek. I opened a Myraid and a Quivet '11 and immediately regretted it. I found them undrinkable, so hopefully some time will help.
