Philadelphia Wine Group?

Hey all, my wife and I recently moved to Philadelphia, and we haven’t really found a tasting group yet. I’ve posted a few times in the OFFLINE forum hoping to get something together, but nothing really materialized. I’ve been kindly emailed by a few people about paid tastings in Philly and hope to attend them in the future. What we are really looking for though, are the casual get togethers, blind tastings, dinners, etc where everyone brings something interesting.

While my wife and I enjoy having interesting, good bottles of wine with each other, we find ourselves missing the tasting group/sharing aspect that we had while living in DC. We were fortunate enough to be welcomed by a bunch of fantastic people, who shared their wisdom (and wine) while we were just starting out getting into wine.

With all the good BYOB in Philadelphia, it seems like a great place to share some food and wine. So is anyone or any tasting group in the philly area looking for some new contributors?

Check with Rob Panzer of Down To Earth Wines - He is a member here.

I’m in the area, but sadly my limited resources (time, money, wine, etc) limit my ability to participate. Rob Panzer’s tasting dinners at Bistro 7 always look great - do get on his list.

There’s a small contingent that posts infrequently at www.pawinetalk.com you might be able to catalyze something there.

If you are northeast of Philly we have off lines in lambertville or Princeton area

Philadelphia seems to be a tough place to get an informal group together. It does seem that it should be doable with all the BYOs here.

Hey everyone thanks for the responses … Hopefully I can get into contact with some of the people mentioned and I can into a regular rotation with these tastings.

Kevin thanks for the link, will have to check out that forum.

CJSavino my parents live in Princeton and that is where the majority of my wine is, so we would definitely be up for some offlines in the Princeton area.

Ted, I know we spoke briefly before about getting something together … Let me know if you’re available anytime soon!

Rob, Ann and I might be interested depending on the particulars, our kid situation, etc. As others have said, Panzers tastings are good.

There are also monthly Red Clay Chapter of American Wine Society Meetings in the Wilmington area on the first Friday of the month.

Where are you located in the Philly area? There are a good number of groups dispersed in the 5 counties plus NJ.

Hey Brian, we are located in center city. My wife and I are both residents and Jefferson hospital, and we live about a block from the main hospital building. As I mentioned above, my parents live in princeton, so we would definitely be interested in offlines in that area as well.

Was there a post a few years back about how unfriendly PA is towards BYO?

When I started the CLONYC group in 2006 I never imagined what it would turn into. We are now 41 tastings strong with no end in sight. One of my better decisions in life…

Mike, that definitely would be some other city, or one very misguided post. A couple years ago there was talk of the Philly BYO boom dying out. Wrong again. Well over half the highest food rated (Zagats) restaurants in the City are BYOs. I doubt there’s any city in the US offering better BYO dining options, usually without corkage.

Rob, attend a couple of Panzer tastings and I’m sure you’ll get plugged in to a lot more Philly wine people. Mike has a valid point about “build it, and they will come”.

I’d love to join a Philly based tasting group for offlines.

My girlfriend is from Philly, so we would be interested in coming up from time to time to do a Philly offline.

Rob I agree with Rich on this especially since you are in CC. You can branch out from there as the participants in Rob P’s group morph pretty regularly and a good number also live in CC.

Hi, hopefully you’re still interested in getting a group together. I’m a Certified Specialist of Wine and a French Wine Scholar working on my WSET studies. I would like to get a group together so we can taste some great wines and split the cost.
It’s tough trying to educate my palate buying $60+ bottles of wine by myself on a regular basis, and I would like to have a group to discuss wines with as well. I can help guide tastings because of my background, and can suggest bottles typical of a region/style to focus our experience. I’m from lower Bucks County, so Philadelphia is close for me.

I’m interested, and I have some wine.

Would be interested in participating as well. I am in Ewing NJ, close to Lambertville/Princeton.

Anyone up for an Easter-week get-together?

Depends on where…

Ann and I might be in depending on the date/time/place. Ted I need to catch up with you soon to get that Liquid Farm. Are you doing any of Rob’s tastings this month?
