Those dual lines at Papera, is that deficit irrigation? They're so close to each other.

The irrigation at all 4 of the vineyards we visited was for replants only in order to get them established. Check that. At Limerick Lane it was add during the drought. Jake said that a couple years back when they pruned, the vines instead of weeping at the cut, cracked. The irrigation was set up that Winter to mimic Winter rainfall. The following year the vines were healthy and hydrated again. They have already pulled the lines from one block and will, test the results this Fall before removing the rest of them.

The map on Papera's website is not quite accurate. The block east of the house (on the right side in the map) is block 6 and the block labeled as 6 is really block 7. Carlisle takes blocks 2, 4, 5 (the new planting), and 7. Block 6 is Bedrock and blocks 1 and 3 are Williams Selyem.

Thanks for the clarification Mike. Chris must have been off a bit as he pointed to one as yours that turns out to be W-S.

Thanks, Mike! I love the Papera Ranch, along with many of the nearby vineyards for mind-blowing Zinfandel field blends.

At this point in my limited exposure to Carlisle red wines, the Saitone Vineyard 2012 is probably my favorite.

Not a big vineyard, just someone's backyard vines in Lenno Italy with Lake Como in the background.

Brian,
Any word on whether the vines being flooded will have an affect on them, long or short term? How long can vines be flooded like that before it damages them?

The vines are normally dormant when the vineyards flood. In this case it was right at bud break. I've seen them go under with 1' shoots and be fine. Long term probably isn't good once leaves appear but usually it's only a day or two and the water recedes.

We're in Paso for a couple days, couldn't resist getting a few shots of some interesting vineyards.

Niner Wine Estates Heart vineyard, wonder where they got that name from?

Image

The left side of Heart vineyard, when you're here it looks like it goes straight up.

Image

Some fairly new (< 2 yrs old) plantings at Pear Valley. Cool oak tree on the hill just up from the winery.

I assisted harvesting these syrah grapes from these pergola trained vines this past fall. This batch went into the Scherrer Dry Rose.

The David Bayliss Photography website has some amazingly beautiful shots of vineyards from all over the world.

Here are a few...

I love this thread. Here are my favorites from a Trip to South Africa in March 2013

Waterkloof
Image
I had the 2016 Waterkloof Cape Coral [Stellenbosch] last week. It's a rose made with Mourvedre. Unfortunately I thought it was a watery, forgettable wine even if it may be sourced from a beautiful area. At least it was in a screwcap. At $10-12 I think its overpriced.
