One of the striking things about the photos in this thread is the contrast between the relatively flat topography of the New World vineyards and the slopes of the Old World.

In the latter category, I think the Ahr Valley may take the cake. As the most northerly serious wine region of Germany, north of Koblenz west of the Rhine, the grapes need to be on virtually vertical slopes to catch every last ray of sunshine. This was taken in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in 2004.

Speaking of, here are a couple more from the Ahr, from in and around Resch:

This vine was at least ninety years old, but the exact age wasn't known.

And here are some from my time working in Oberemmel/Wiltingen:

And later in the year:

Oberemmeler Altenberg - this would be getting into Von Hövel's part, if I recall correctly.

Unfortunately I can't find any the pictures I took in Scharzhofberg.

Great picture. To be honest, for my personal taste, I'd not be unhappy if vineyards such as the Walporzheimer Gärkammer (which is one of the hottest) would get a little less sun. I find many of the Ahr Spätburgunders too alcoholic and jammy these days.

It's certainly true that the old world has most of the really dramatic slopes and terracing, but the new world has it too:

This is Mountain Terraces Vineyard in the foreground, Monte Rosso in the background (Sonoma Carneros and the San Pablo Bay in the distance):

I drove up to Evangelho Vineyard yesterday at dawn and met with Chris Cottrell to watch Frank Evangelho and his crew pick Carignane for Bedrock's Ode to Lulu Rosé. What an amazing vineyard! ...with breezes off the bay moderating the heat of Contra Costa County, old vines planted on their own roots, dry farmed in deep sand:
