WTSO today-Lois Boillot Premier Cru "les cent vignes"

Hi all-

Hoping some Burgundy afficionados can help out a newbie who likes the Burgundy he’s had and wants to be careful about purchases.

WTSO has Louis Boillot Beaune Premier Cru “Les Cent Vignes” at $28/bottle.

I see nothing on CT or Wine-Searcher regarding a “Les Cent Vignes” from this winemaker from ANY vintage. 2011 is supposed to be an OK vintage for Burgundy including Cote de Beaune, and I know this winemaker makes wines from lots of different Burgundy appelations, but does anyone have any opinions as to whether this one is likely to be good?

This is, I think, a different Louis Boillot to the one who is married to Ghislaine Barthod and makes excellent wine. I don’t know anything about these but Cent Vignes is among the weakest of the Beaune 1ers and I would want to sample it first.

Jonathan H. Newman apparently gave this puppy 92-93 points!! That was all I needed to hear. Back up the truck!!! [snort.gif]

Thanks-I didn’t know that Cent Vignes is not highly regarded among the Beane Premier Cru vineyards. Just out of curiosity, how did you learn that? Just common knowledge you come upon over time?

PS. I decided to let this one go. Just too many red flags (no CT reviews, no other retailers carrying it on wine-searcher, etc.).

I just make it an ironclad rule to pass on any WTSO offer that only has a Johnathan Newman score, no matter how tempting. He seems to have an amazing tolerance for flawed wine.

I agree on the “rule”…It’s not that I’ve noticed any bad/flawed wines offered by WTSO that he scores highly. My assumption would be that most of these are very passable, average, pedestrian wines (not flawed or terrible, just boring).

The problem is that, whoever Jonathan Newman is, he scores EVERY wine between 90 and 93 points. I’ve never seen a Jonathan Newman score that was outside that range…

Have any of you guys ever bought wine from WTSO that you thought was great?

I don’t look for great wines on WTSO. I buy everyday drinkers like Pionero Maccerato Albarino, or Fonterutoli and Viticcio Chianti.
I used to take fliers on unfamiliar Napa Cabs, and that’s how I learned that Johnathan Newman has a nearly infinite tolerance for Brett and VA.

98 Palmer comes to mind

I think in this case just from drinking the stuff, Eric, it’s always seemed relatively underpowered by the standard of the best.

For those who don’t know — Newman was a past “Chairman” of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). He did modernize our ridiculous state monopoly system and started a program called “Chairman’s Selection.” These were wines he hand-picked, bought the supply for cheap, and pushed through the 600+ stores. There were a few good bargains but most were similar to what he is rating now for WTSO.

Never great, drinkable, interesting and sometimes horrible, but great could not describe anything I 've bought on WTSO.

2008 von Hovel Riesling Scharzhofberger Kabinett is pretty damn good!

I bought a few of the '08 Louis Boillot Clos de la Chapelle a while back and I have to say it was actually a very delicious bottle, especially at the price point. Don’t know if the bottling you are mentioning is any good, but from my albeit limited experience, given the price you could do worse…

2006 Bodegas Resalte de Penafiel Ribera del Duero
Rothschild/ConchaYToro Vina Almaviva Puente Alto Cabernet Sauvignon
2005 Havens Reserve merlot
2006 Keller Estate La Cruz Vineyard Sonoma Coast (great for the price, $19.50 each)

2002 Domaine Michelot Bourgogne Blanc at $11.99 was a brilliant Mersault back in 2007, even though it was a mere Bourgogne.

WTSO has a “platinum” category-ask to receive access-some higher end stuff there. Must be signed in to see those offerings.

Yes. Many wines but strangely none purchased on Newman’s notes.
